I heard some squeeks on the hydrophone and tracked them down, finally coming across a group of dolphins a few hundred nautical miles west of Ireland. Thought it was a really nice touch with the dolphins audible on the hydrophone by the way. Aren't the waters too cold for dolphins in the North Atlantic? I thought they were a tropical mammal, sticking closer to the equator, but I could be wrong. Maybe there are some marine biologists on the forums who could shed some light.

We get dolphins across Ireland and the Western coast of Southern England and Wales.
There is also a few coral reefs on the Scottish coast.

I did not know that except for coral reefs in the topics like in Thailand or in the Great Barrier Reef in Aussieland.

Its a limitation of the poor UVW map the SH3 Devs makde for the dolphins.

That skin might not be the one in GWX.

Thank you, that is so cool!

But...you mean there were dolphins in stock SH3 too? I thought that was new to GWX.

The dolphins model and textures where in stock SH3, But not in game.
They where in a unused folder. Probably something the Devs didn't have time to complete.

Now all we need are sharks circling the sinking ships. :arrgh!:

Maybe that too like that one cruiser that was carryin the atom bomb.

Aren't you going just a little OT, azn?

btw, the Northsea has dolphins....like this one, the smallest species Phocoena phocoena:

http://www.noordzee.nl/images/dieren/bruinvis_groot.jpg

and this one...Tursiops truncatus:

http://www.noordzee.nl/images/dieren/dolfijnen_walvissen/Tuimelaar01_WJStrietman_15x4.jpg

and the white-tipped Lagenorhynchus albirostris

http://www.noordzee.nl/images/dieren/dolfijnen_walvissen/witsnuitdolfijnkalender2_g.jpg

So that's 3 species, feeling perfectly at home in the relatively cold Northsea.
In my game - sailing from Bergen - I always encounter some when leaving the Norwegian coast. :D

I heard some dolphins on the hydrophones the other day... way in the distance.

I didn't try to find them but it was nice just knowing they were there.

A sign of good luck!

Maybe that too like that one cruiser that was carryin the atom bomb.

Cruiser indianapolis , was torpedoed by a japanese submarine i-58, two torpedo impacts send it to the depths in 12 minutes.

900 survivors stay 4 days in the waters encircled by sharks until they were spotted by a plane thinking that was a submarine oil slick, only 317 stay alive. :nope:

Maybe that too like that one cruiser that was carryin the atom bomb.

"The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 15 November 1932. The ship served with honor from Pearl Harbor through the last campaign of World War II, sinking in action two weeks before the end of the war. On 30 July 1945, while sailing from Guam to Leyte, Indianapolis was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58. The ship capsized and sank in twelve minutes. Survivors were spotted by a patrol aircraft on 2 August. All air and surface units capable of rescue operations were dispatched to the scene at once, and the surrounding waters were thoroughly searched for survivors. Upon completion of the day and night search on 8 August, 316 men were rescued out of the crew of 1,199."

Matter of fact, watch the movie Jaws. Whats his name, the captain of the boat that goes out and kills Jaws tells the story of the USS Indianapolis as he was a member of her crew. One of the best moments in that movie in MHO.

Just heard some more Dolphins coming out of the Bay of Biscay. My TC slowed down so I went down to check and it was another pack of Dolphins, I didn't track them down this time, but they're there if you want to find them.

I remember reading about a u-boat killing porpoise with handgrenades for some fresh food.
Next GWx feature?

They need a mod where you can call in a Kraken if there are some pesky DD's overhead.

The texture you posted is the one in GWX...I made the skin....I think it was Rubini that did the navigation of the dolphins and activated the sounds I believe. I think the sounds are a very cool addition

The original stock ubisoft dolphin looked like this:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Tikigod78/dolphinold.jpg

The GWX version that I did looks like this:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Tikigod78/dolphinnew.jpg

The original texture weird looking dolphin was in game but, ubisoft never activated it. It was hidden in the original game dat files and was never completed.

The 3-d model of the SH3 is limited since it was never complete....you can't place the eye in the correct postion due to the model limitations. The textures stretch in alot of weird places on the model. So, I placed the eye in the best spot with the least amount of distortion. If you move the eye in any direction from this point, it will turn into a long smear or smudge of a line. Its a very difficult texture to work with and this is what it looks like:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Tikigod78/DLF_comun.jpg

You can see how stange the model is just by its shape.

They need more detailed eyes tho.

I know this has already been addressed in this thread, but I'll emphazise this point (as I'm a marine biologist)--you can find "dolphines" all over. In cold and warm waters. I live in Southern California (near the channel islands), and we have some of the highest densities of dolpines you'll find anywhere in the world--and the water isn't warm here. Water temp. has nothing to do with their distribution. Food dictates their distribution--and of course you find different species in different habitats.

Anyway, lecture over. Besides, I study marine invertabrates, so I actually know very little about marine mammals. Just enough to be dangerous.

Cheers,

I have some ships to sink.

Oh, we have sealions here as well. In fact, I can hear them barking right now from my bedroom. They love to haul out on the boyies (sp) right out from where I live. When I've been surfing, I've had them swim up really close--not to my liking. They're like sea going large dogs--who are completely wild. They scare me more than sharks as they're much more abundant. Sometimes they'll be inside of the surf which makes me worried about accidently scaring one--which is the situation that leads to bits. Ever heard of "Seal Arm"? Those bastards have a bacteria treat for you.

@Tikigod

The poor 3D model / UV mapping of the dolphin in SH3 has been corrected by our good man Ref... removing the problem that you mentioned with the gaps in structure during movement.

I haven't yet tested your dolphin texture in GWX (The one present in GW 1.1a)

I need to make sure that it doesn't re-introduce the problem prior to re-implimentation in the actual mod files for GWX.
