Ironic, you played the lead role in Saving Western Civilization and end up owing us money.
Bravo, Britain, bravo.

Anyone know what that would be in today's money?
Oh yeah, I read in todays paper that the U.S. added on back interest so thats another 150,000,000 pounds you owe us. Congress said they'd take Tiny Tim and Boy George in trade though. :)

Sorry, you can't have Boy George but you can have [sickly] Graham Norton instead

The origional debt was more than 52 million in todays money, but less than 52 million at the time.
The ammount owed constantly changed with the intrest added on each year.
*Edit* Are you sure its not 52 billion?? 52 million is peanuts.
The UK is still in a vast ammount of debt tho, much of it to America.
The UK national debt as at the end of 2003 - the last date for accurate(ish) figures was...£437.4 billion
That was one debt worth getting into! Good job.
I just hope it doesn't take me this long to pay off my student loans

£437 billion, isn't that much if you think about it.
some pundits were reckoning that now the lend lease debt is paid off that the UK might get more iffy towards the US. Hmm there goes a flying pig.

Good news, now if you Americans could just pay up for the tea (about £6.5M I believe) after that nasty little business in Boston...

odd that it was 54m though seems like peanuts when paying a debt off doesn't it? (country wise) but there we go.

that is negligable compared to the debt the US has. national economies are a just a bit dodgy that way. you can owe lots but it doesnt matter as long as the economy can hold it. Britain may be in debt but compared to unstable economies like zimbabwe our financial 'troubles' are trife.
this latest payment of £45 million is the last of 80 or so.
nb, the us offered to write off the debt years ago the other countries under the land-lease scheme accepted, Britain refused and payed off the full debt on principle.

And about WWI and WWII:
"The Americans will always do the right thing...after they've exhausted all the alternatives." - Winston Churchill
And in WWII thanks for giving us the tools to finish the job

Anyone remember that uhh..great American success? What was it called? Uhh..
Paukenschlag, was it? ;)
:arrgh!: :arrgh!: :arrgh!:
Imagine if all the debts for all the wars were dropped... just canceled out ...
No more holding war debt over any country.
What would be the economic result?
:hmm:

Well, all the countries who loaned out money would be that much poorer (or at least that much less rich).

Yep, and they could forget any loans in the future, too.
