View Full Version : X1: British Convoy Killing Sub

An interesting article about a massive sub the Brits could have used on the Germans in WWII:

The X1, a triumph of British naval engineering, would have been a major force in the Second World War, according to Roger Cook, from Swansea.

The huge vessel was as big a political embarrassment to the UK's diplomats as it could have been a destroyer of enemy convoys.

To bad there is no pictures with the article or even a sketch. But WOW, how the war could have turned if this baby was cruising about!

Surcouf: The largest operational submarine in the world during her service.

Well, as you might expect, the French did build it, and it did not work very well. Very cool though.

Let us not forget the WWI M class Brit subs with their 305MM (12inch) gun.
This was to be used as shore bombardment but the Brits felt if they used it the Germans would copy the idea so decided not to use it as they were more vunerable to a duplicate weapon.
Like buying a shotgun to protect your family but not shooting the intruder for fear of his lawyer!

Imagine if this could be turned and fired to the broadside! How many roll overs would it make?

Okay now that's just scary. I wonder how much of the performance would be retained on an operational boat as compared to the specs though. At first glance I'd guess it'd actually handle like a pig on ice. :hmm:

Don't you mean Type XI (11, as opposed to 9? The Type IX was the ocean-going boat. Type IXB, IXC, IXD2, etc...)?

Let's get the type XI modded into the game... We could start a whole series of Superweapon mods that might fit into the Naval arena and work in the game...

Gibs has erm..*cough* a U-Cruiser it's a type IX with 5 105mm DG's ;) So in theory these X-craft could be possible.
With regards to the XI

The projected specifications of the Type XI U-Cruiser were:
Length (oa):115 meters
Width: 9.5 meters
Draught: 6.2 meters
Displacement: 3 630 tons.
Propulsion: 2-shaft diesel/electric motors,(eight 12cyl. diesel engines in two separate engine rooms plus two electric motors in a seperate compartment).
Armament: 4 bow TT.
2 stern TT.
4 X 12.7cm cannon in two twin armored turrets.
2 X 3.7cm AA cannon.
2 X 2 cm AA mounted in Wintergarten.
1 X Arado reconnaissance seaplane.
Crew: 110 men, plus capacity to carry approximately 60 Brandenburgers.

actually is there any way to just spawn turrets on a type X? obviously the largest. perhaps where the deck gun would normally be stick a twin 105 turret or sommat?
does anyone know if this is at all possible? or is this hard-coded?

pete

edited for stupidity.

Spawn = No, Edit the model = Yes

Infact, CCIP (IIRC) even placed BB turrets on planes and tugs. I'll see if I can find the link.
