Started to play sh3 again last week and have been able to avoid any screwups for 10 missions now thanks to your helpfull tips last time. Got a simple question. Watched Das Boot again and i got the impression that "obersteurmann Kriechbaum" is the second in command after the captain. I thought the cheif engineer is second? Which officer in sh3 is the obersteurmann? , the NO?? Its not important but its nice to know which one is next in command.:hmm:

I think your watch officer is the second in command. I'm only guessing though!

The second in command at any given point in time would be the officer on watch duty at the time. But for the purpose of the overall chain of command (the individual who would take command in the event of the captin 'falling') IMO would be the Weapons Officer. :arrgh!:

Check their ranks. The next in command will be the higher ranking officer, or NCO if all the officers are killed or disabled. If the rank is the same, the senior officer is the one commissioned first.

I believe my earlier post is true of the surface fleet :yep:
Unless it is different in the U-boat service I'd certainly be interested to know :hmm:

The U-Boats had the I. WO (First Watch Officer) and the II. WO (Second Watch Officer). If the Captain died the I.WO took over even if their was an officer with an higher rank, because he was the XO.

:hmm: WO, didnt think of him. Its just a movie but the reason i wonder is that the captain asked "kriechbaum" for advice in the convoy attack but then the "high strung nazi type guy from mexico" makes the shot at the burning tanker. In the beginning of the movie the officer later seen most on the bridge(WO then maybe) has an iron cross so maybe ur right that it is the WO. If u think i´ve seen that movie to many times ur correct:huh:. But what a movie it is, greatest warmovie ever:rock:

First Watch Officer (1WO) Oberleutnant zur See or Leutnant zur See Executive Officer. The second in command.
He shadowed the CO closely so that he could take command if the CO fell ill or was killed in battle. His other responsibilities included the boat’s weapons systems and conducting torpedo aiming during surface attacks.

First is the First Watch Officer (IWO or 1WO). Yes, the nazi. He is an Oberleutnant, and the only other man of that rank is the Chief Engineer, who, being an engineer is not in the command chain at all. Second, of course, is the Second Watch Officer. Krichbaum's position is Obersteurmann, but his rank is only Oberfanrich sur See (similar to an American Ensign). In the book he was older than the two officers senior to him but joined late, hence the low rank. The captain respects him and asks for advice from time to time, but this is also partly to encourage him to strive for higher rank and not just wait out the war.

Even the Fanrich (Midshipman) Ullmann outranks the Chief as far as command structure goes.
