View Full Version : Ports worth visiting
I'm curious as to what ports are worth a look at to catch capital ships asleep?
I see lots of people visit Scapa, are there any others that are visited by capital ships?
In my first 4 patrols of my GWX campaign i sunk the Hood, Illustrious and Rodney but haven't seen anything since. I'm going to upgrade to IX boat soon but wouldn't mind hunting some more capital ships before then. Any suggestions?

Just that Stix said at the top in his post that he was running GWX.

if you really want to know what's in some ports,
you should contact the office of Naval Intelligence.
In other words
run Sh3gen.

The Hood and Illustrious where up around AN 11 North West of scapa on the edge of the shelf (I try not to patrol shallow waters) very early in the war. I lucked on to both by picking up the taskforce sound contacts with no "taskforce report". The Rodney was travelling in a convoy reported by Bdu.

Aye it is a fine balance mate:up:
I don't run SH3 commander or sh3gen. Prefer to go where i'm told, always good to pick up the latest gossip on ship movements around the bars before heading to sea though. I don't trust those naval intel guys.

In early war, (must be in the right time in 1939~1940), scapa flow, firth of forth, liverpool (never, never, too many minefields+patrols),...
Later war, NEVER. Capital ships NEVER dock at ports, but goes with task force. You may be able to inflitrate a base with a Light cruiser and several landing ships, troop transports, and other stuffs with Harbour Traffic v1.47 mod which I used before GWX.
WARNING, ALTHOUGH ALL OF THE PREYS ARE JUICY (I prefer landing ships first since they must go down with 2 fish, with appox. 300 renown falls on my hand), NEVER SURFACE, since TROOP TRANSPORTS OWNS 6 GUNS and a lot of MGs. The Cruiser, of cause the more. I once died due to the greedy mind
You can never sunk all of them, as you don't own enough fish (even XXI is not adequate if u use duds and the weather is no good)

Jimbuna is right. SH3 Gen is the way ahead!
The way I see it, is whether he believes what they say or not, in R/L no sensible Kaleun would leave ever laeve port without talking to a Naval Intelligence Officer. There are lives at stake here gentelmen!
Piece of intel I've got for the community....

And throughout the entire war he was the only one who got away with it. After October 1939 the British beefed up security to the extreme, and harbor raids should be next to impossible.

I just finished my patrol in AN21 (my first patrol with GWX - October 39) and was wondering if it was worthwihile to go into Lerwick Harbour.
Or should I just sit in between Lerwick and Scapa Flow and wait for convoys. or go into Scapa Flow.
Now going into harbours, should I do it at night or day?

I don't because it was not the purpose of U boats. One time only been all the way up to Bristol early war on a special assigment from SH3Gen to sink an auxiliary cruiser. I had to try twice because of fog and the aux. cruiser was gone, so I sunk a 9000 t Troop transport to pass my nerves.;) The fog was in fact the main problem...
Only times I go in ports is for rearming from german cargo ships. I love the open sea and don't feel comfortable in shallow places...:D (I don't reload saves when I am dead...)

In my Intelligence report (for my first patrol in October 1939) it mentions two ports, that are interesting because of what they contain, but I cannot find them. They are Longyearbyen and Dunkerques, but I've looked all over the map and I cannot find these ports. I am presently between Shetland Inseln and Orkney.
Can anyone tell me where these harbours are?
Thanks
Rob
Also, where can I get topo maps that contain the Brisith Iles, Greenland and Iceland and over to the east of norway and down to Gibraltar?

Don't know about the first one but Dunkerque is a french port on the Channel near from Calais. This is where the british embarked what was left of their expeditionary forces after the invasion of France.
On the map I guess it appears under its german name of Dünkirchen...

I hit scapa flow in the 1940 but after all the pain of getting in(avoiding 3 DDs in shallow water) all I found anchored was a poor DD and a small cargo... talk about dissapointment:down: (still blew them up... just for the sake of it:ping:)

Dunkirk at the beggining of Operation Dynamo has a few nice targets as well.
I snuck in afteer dark and rode in decks awashed most of the way (nice foggy night). Only an armed trawler on gaurd and he is to close to shore to matter. Found an Aux Cruiser parked out front and 3 Liners!!!!, troop transport and multitudes of other smaller targets. The 2 bigger liners were docked in such a manner that they couldn't be fired at . So went to PD and took out Aux cruiser and the small 12,000 ton (lol) Liner.

My next patrol grid is around loch ewe so let see the nelson is there or other ships.
I guess i'ts Dunkirk thats the best target early in the war. No protection at all, just 3-4 stationary destroyers. Also features a large tanker, a passenger liner, a couple of smaller ships and some neutrals. Visited it 2 times now, and it gave me 1300 of renown per each visit. :|\\

From what I've seen, the following ports are always bustling with ships:
Scapa Flow (1939-40 only, really)
Loch Ewe (Usually has about 20-30k worth of tonnage, more if 1940 or later)
Boston
NYC
Galveston (again, not a ton, but consistent for the times I've been there)
Belfast
Dover
Those are the ones I've infiltrated the most since starting with GWX. There are various non-major port cities that usually have shipping in them, too. There's one north of Bergen that is undefended and has about 34K tons to sink in it.

Now out of the ones listed above, I haven't found any history that states that Dunkirk had minefields in Oct 1939.
