From the beginning of the war until July 1942, Helmut Schmoeckel served on the cruiser Admiral Hipper. After the U-boat training and a few months as I WO he became commander of U-802 (http://uboat.net/boats/u802.htm) in December 1943. He operated mostly in the North Atlantic and in Canadian waters. He surrendered his U-boat on 11 May, 1945 in Loch Eriboll.
After the war Helmut Schmoeckel wrote the book Menschlichkeit im Seekrieg (http://uboat.net/books/index.html/title/665) (Humanity in the Naval War), in which he described instances of German naval crews giving aid to shipwrecked Allies.
