The year is 1942, my boat is a 7C

A few hours ago my watch crew spotted an enemy destroyer far off in the distance. I checked it out and decided to dive for safetys sake. I dove to approximately 45 meters and sailed at roughly 4 knots. Maybe 10 minutes later this destroyer is on top of me and starts dropping depth charges! I have turned my boat in all kinds of directions and have attempted to out smart him for roughly 2 1/2 hours now. I have stayed at silent speed with a mix of flank during depth charges. I am now sitting at 255 meters and she is holding strong. :o

This has been some of the most fun I have had in SHIII, but also very frustrating. He has not used ASDIC since he first began his attack run. I can't lose him.

What can I do? Why did he stop using ASDIC? I haven't heard any pings for quite some time.

This was one destroyer, my god what will happen when I attack a convoy fully escorted? This is my first time playing GWX late in the war. (I usually only last until about 41)

Also, this is for a patrol with my wolves at war character. This really makes things SO much more intese. I have spent hours writing a story for my character and his crew and doing training patrols etc... I can't lose him damnit!

(Edit: Just as I am writing this, I notice the destroyer is now at medium range! I may have finally lost him....)
(Edit again: Nope... this damn guy is coming back now.)

Holy smokes that's what you call intense, I can't believe it is still chasing you, good luck.

I assume you have rigged for Silent Running. And you will probably need to lower your speed to 1-2 kts. If you can get a little distance on him, then try to raise the boat to periscope depth where it is harder for him to detect you at that angle. Remember when you are at his stern, he probably can't detect you at all. If you are 90° to him, you still have a pretty good chance he won't here you. Remember the Bold decoys are your best friend if you have them.

Blow the latrine in hopes he think you are dead!!! Let us know what happens. You are running silent? Slow?

I finally lost him. I ran ahead slow most of the time. I think that's where my error was. I started running at 1kt and that's when he started to lose me. Either that, or he just ran out of eels. That was pretty intense. Sitting here for that long in real time started to make me feel like Johann!

I am amazed that he found me in the first place. He was a distant contact when I first dove under. I had just sunk a large cargo ship in the area, so maybe he was responding to that.

But why would he stop using his ASDIC? :hmm:

My guess is that at 255 meters, you were able to avoid the beam.

Or maybe you were being loud enough that all he needed was passive.

That's freakin intense though.

These guys have pretty good hydrophone operators and your sub is easier to spot when under water. As a rule, even if DD is a long distance sight, I go less than 20m deep (seems they have more trouble finding you at this depth) rig silent running and go down to 1 or 2 knts until they disappear. So far, so good...;)
If you went 45m at 4 knts, I am not surprised they found you. I think this is not the good depth zone, because anyway you have to make noise to have enough speed to dive that deep.
Of course this is also all influenced by weather.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am sure it will help me to survive again in the long run.

I had a similar event. the only thing is that it ended with CTD when I did a daring attack on the DD to get him out of the seas. (read my "Yaaaarrrggghhh!!!!" thread for detailed description.)

Those bloody merchants are nutters too,I rammed a small merchant by accident didn't look where I was going, and while I was reversing of the merchant anouther one slammed into me doing 11 knts.

I had a Black Swan lock onto me in Nov. '39. I attacked his convoy and it pissed hom right off. I went deep and silent and I couldn't shake him. His sonar guy was damn good. Lucky for me, Dinsdale was in charge of the DC's because he would sail right over me and launch the DC's off the side racks. So the DC's ending up going to the right and left of me far enough away that they didn't do anything. He never found the right depth either. Eventually he ran out of DC's. I came up to pariscope depht in an attempt to fire my stern torpedo at him. I fired at 600m as he was bearing stait down at me but he saw it and diverted corse just enough to miss it. I ended up having to do a crash dive so he wouldn't ram me. Hopeing that he would do another stern to front pass trying to ram me, I secured from silent and reloaded tube 1. I came back up to pariscope depth and let him line up to ram me again. When he got close, I dove deep enough not to collide with him and then came back up to pariscope depth once he had past and sent a torpedo right into his screws. He sank a few minuets later. Overall I was running from this destroyer for 7 hours or so.

If I were you... I know that 8x TC is hard to withstand, but it need some patience

I would go deep, once it lose my contact... I go back to PD, fire 2 eel to it (at short distance), destroy it and all danger goes like magic

Once it loses my contact, I slip away as I wouldn't want to waste 2 precious torpedoes on the little thing when the same 2 torpedoes can sink a 10.000 t tanker...:D

Some real good tactics described here.

How do you run at 1kt? I thought you could only order ahead slow, which runs you at ~2kts.

There's a button below all 3 dials in the bottom right of the screen. Click on them to get new dials etc.

Sometimes you can fire your rear torp and they will go after it while you quietly sneak away.

I'm not exactly sure how well this would work in GWX as I have not tried it in this mod to find out yet but I'll let you know.

Its a waste of a torp I know, but when its life and death I'd rather take it on the chin from Donitz, that sucker can't hit anyway.

Or you went under a thermal layer (presumimg you are using SH3Commander) :arrgh!:

Do the DDs have a limited amount of Depth Charges?

Do the DDs have a limited amount of Depth Charges?

Yes they do
It varies from ship to ship but for Corvettes and the like its around 200

Did GWX adjust the amount of charges on ships?

The Black Swan stalking me ran out of DC's after like 6 hours :-?

No
Each rack\DC launcher\K and Y gun has a limited amount approx 40 IIRC
The more launchers etc the ship has the more it can carry
