View Full Version : Your favourite kill shot on Large Merchants

I'm curious as to what your best tactic is to bring down large merchants. I have sunk them with 1 torp but more commonly it's 1 torp magnetic - 9m, under the stack and another impact - 4-5m just forward of the stack.

Anyone have a consistant 1 shot kill spot?

I'm using GWX with nothing else.

I seem to have a hard time hitting the fuel tanks though, any advice?

all i do is close to within a 1000m line myself up to 90 degrees (side ways on obviously) and stick a load of men in my torp room till the bar is full. go to periscope view and use the i.d manual find the correct ship and on the picture of the ship little black boxes appear move your cursor over these and target whichever compartment you want. you wont see these compartments appear unless the torp bar is full, you must be within 1000m and be more or less 90 degrees from the target ship

A midships-shot at C2's at about 6 meters depth and impact datonator will most likely break it in two I noticed.:arrgh!:

The "Large Cargo" I bagged last night in GWX was like this. With other mods I used to fire one magnetic at 10m under her keel dead center. Did that last night and did not even seem to phase the ship. Was not expecting that! Totally lost the drop I had on her in a storm and ended up coming up at 500m directly behind her. Figured what the hay and let one rip at 4m magnetic. She went down like a stone!

I usualy fire 2 torps at the biggest target in the convoy. (One magnetic at ~10m and one impact at ~6m)

I fire all other torps at 6m includeing my stern torp if I have time. One torp per ship.

This way I allways sink the biggest target and I have a 60% chance of sinking 3-4 other ships.

Yes you can select the fuel bunkers, but the torp goes to midship unless you use manual targeting.

Not always true Fong. I just ran a Single Mission in GWX taking out 3 T3s and 3 Large merchants. Takes much longer for them to sink but no problem there.... added realism. Using auto targeting I expected the shots to all hit midship but that didn't happen all the time as it did in stock SHIII. Some hit towards the stern and most hit near the bow. Only 2 shots hit midship out of the 14 fired.

:hmm: And I didn't see any selecting of Fuel Bunkers even for ships that were under 1000m away. 4 were as close as 320 yards.

you will find the torps go where you are looking
not where you select on the special targeting section of the recognition manual.

and special targeting occurs when you are near 90 aob
and facing the target, just like it did under GW 1.1a

Besides for 100% realism players
Time compression has to be locked at one.

So does having a full torpedo room improve your how well your torps actually run?!?!?

I usually have a skeleton crew in here and only fill it up for reloading.

My favorite kill shot was one torpedo, set to run under the keel. It hit about halfway forward of the smokestack towards the bow. The ship didn't lose engine power, explode, or anything, just kept chugging along for at least half an hour. As I evaded destroyers, etc, I kept switching to freecam and noticed that the bow was dipping lower and lower in the water :p

Eventually the anchors started dipping under water and I knew she was going down! A bit later my officers informed me of this :D and the bow finally had water lapping over it! This was GWX, quite an enjoyable kill, I thought the ship was going to be fine from the initial look of things!

I always use the electric torpedoes, and will usually put a magnetic followed directly by an impact (set to a slightly lower depth than the magnetic) into my victim. That combination usually does it for me.
