View Full Version : English Channel & SH3 - your thoughts ?

The channel is relatively shallow, with an average depth of about 120m at its widest part. The average depth within the game ranges from somewhere between 1m - 40m. I'm one person who uses the channel quite often. I've never died in there yet....touch wood. Is this depth in the game correct or is this a major depth fault within the game.

Any thoughts on this gentlemen & ladies ? :hmm:

My source for this depth of 120m is from the following link.

Hmm don't know for certain, I'm sure the locals could answer that one.

If I ever am tempted to enter the English Channel, I lie down until the desire passes.

I believe the channel is deeper than what the game offers, but not my much. Also, a channel is just that, a channel, so the 120m should be somewhere in the middle of it. I suspect there is a deeper channel to follow within the game but I have not looked for it and will not as the channel is no fun at all:nope:

IIRC in the Pas de Calais there are many sand bars/shoals that would be very dangerous for U-boats.

The channel is DEADLY. I wouldn't go through it at any time during the war:yep: :yep:

sometimes I sit at the mouth of the english channel at the north and stack up some pretty good Tonnage but always very tempting to go in even further each time. so far so good.

the Forth of clyde is up there and here lately being very tempted to venture in and take a look see it may be my demise all depends on how shallow the waters are there and what kind of defense is there :ping:

I have not done it yet in GWX but itching to have a go,I have done it a few times in GW1.0 and GW1.1 but we will see.

What mods are you using? What level of difficulty? The Channel is a piece of cake in the stock game; not so much with any of the supermods. In real life it was a place u-boats avoided like the plague. As someone posted long ago: "There's a reason it's called the ENGLISH Channel!"

I use GWX and a few eye/sound candy mods. I play at 84% with only torpdeo crew member assist because thats his job and outside view just to admire my u-boat. Everything thing else is locked for realism. Like I said I think I'm blessed because I've never deid in their yet, I have my tactics and manouvres and they have gotten me this far, I just wish I had more depth to play with.

I apologize; you ARE lucky! Or very good.

I would never go into the Channel under those conditions. Of course I also dived when planes showed up in stock SHIII, but that's just me.

it IS possible to get through in early war, but I really hope you have found a good insurance for vandalism damage on your boat. :D

In early war several U-Boats crossed the channel, but it got more dangerous later. I know that Dönitz prohibited crossing the channel when it got too dangerous, but I forgot in which year this was.

In game you receive a message sometime in Sept/Oct 39 - can't remember precisely - telling you the Channel is closed for U Boat traffic and that U boats going to the Atlantic have to go across North Sea.

I was shooting the channel on my second patrol (1939) in U-49 of of Wilhelmshaven last night. Was about halfway through the channel, and around 0100 picked up sonar from a destroyer directly ahead at medium range closing fast from the SW. I immediately turned N at full speed hoping to sneak by, but as luck would have it on his sweep he happened to turn directly at me and shortly afterwards picked me up. In 25m of water not really anywhere to hide, so I dropped to 3 knots silent NW trying to lose him. As the pings got closer I knew he was onto me and it did not look good. Just then I pickup 3 more sonar contacts, warships (DD) approaching fast from the NE. I have no choice but to pop up the periscope to see what's going on, to find the V&W heading directly at me at 400m, spotlight on, and shooting his deck gun at the peri. I drop the periscope and hard rudder left, flank speed, open tube 5. At this point I only have one chance, it's me or him. As soon as the boat gets turned a bit I pop open the periscope and he's there at about 300m and still 20 degrees off at an angle. With no time left to get a better angle I order fire tube 5. 20 seconds later, torpedo impact. The jubilation was tempered when I noticed the pings returning a few seconds later. I take a look at the destroyer and find (thankfully) it is dead in the water. With 3 other DD still quickly closing fast to join the hunt I turn SW and head out at flank. A few minutes later I see the destroyer going down. Needing to get out of there asap I surface at flank and high tail it out of there. Once I was well out of the area I returned to course at normal speed, thanked my lucky stars, and headed for the west end of the channel.

I think we'll take the North Sea for the return trip...

Yeah, I take the scenic route. If I get to move to the French coast as my home port then I do. The channel sucks:down:

Why stay away from the channel? Maybe its wise in the later part of the war. I just played a rebase mission from Wilhemshaven to Brest in aug 1940. Apart from lots of destroyers and a few cruisers at the entrance to the channel (dover side), i had no real trouble. I stayed submerged during the day to avoid the air raids. I sunk 2 c3 and a costal merchant of Porthsmouth and 1 destroyer and 2 armed trawlers through out the channel. I was quite pleased with that consider i was not on patrol and I had lots of fun. :)

Yeah, good question. I decided to hug the French coast when going through the channel. I was in a minefield before I knew it. I spent the day sneaking back to the middle of the channel and had 5 warships looking for me to boot:nope:

the chanell is pure evil with a modded game deeper in real life maybe but also a load of tide/current that a u boat would have to deal with around Dover I am sure there is a misarable currnet if its in your face foget about zippin threw there at 16 knots

Also even early in the war there were air patrols all the time, mostly fighters looking for the other guy's fighters. Point is, the water is shallow, and they should be able to see you very easily.

In GWX, there are so many mines that it makes crossing the channel almost impossible, add that issue to the tons of british warships and you have a recipie for disaster. I've tried going through the channel several times and only made it through once by sheer luck (Watching those mines pass within inches of my boat in external view was so scarry).:o
