View Full Version : Slower Performance during time compession
I was wondering whether anyone else experienced this issue.
On some occasions after a convoy attack, the high time acceleration performance never restores properly.
I play on 2048x when in transit from one area to another. If there are no ships nearby then the sub movement on the map is very smooth and fast.
When I encounter a convoy the performance drops dramatically (as it should with all the ships around). The problem is, that sometimes the smooth performance NEVER restores after a convoy encounter and I am stuck with a chugging poor motion even at 1024x for the rest of the mission. That really takes the enjoyment away, because I know that it should not be so. Upon starting a new patrol everything is great again.
Rebooting the PC and reloading the game or mission do not help.
I would appreciate some help.
Thanks a lot!

the only time i get that is if ive used fraps to record a short clip then obviously the fps drops but doesnt restore properly afterwards im not sure what the problem could be tbh so i just stopped using it now.

Hello and Welcome :sunny:
Can I ask if this TC slowdown occurs when ships are sunk in shallow water?
It has been shown that if a ship is sunk in shallow water then the SH3 engine still tracks it's existence.
FYI - cruising around at high TC, whilst quicker, means that you miss a lot of action. I personally only use a TC upto 512 and only when going to America. At all other times nothing above 128.

After experimenting around, I have found that GWX runs a whole bunch better if you do NOT use SH3Gen to load the superflous map info and "flavor". It's just more stuff that has to be loaded up.

I don't know about that. It's a shame if you cannot use SH3Gen as it's an excellent add-on, but I guess playing GWX is number one priority;)

Melbonian...load it up (SH3Gen) and note your fps. Then try it again without. I have a custom built system with a 1.5 gig Ram, 7800 GS OC card, and dedicated 80 gig game drive...defragged and clean as can be. I was getting 40 fps with SH3Gen....100+ without it.

Wow:o
I never expected to see such a drop in the frame rates due to SH3Gen. Still 40FPS is not that bad actually. I mean the game is functional isn't it? Well close to harbours it might be a bit slower but so far I haven't seen any problems. I have a 3.3GHz with 512MB RAM and 128MB graphics card. Not top class machine but I still have no problems with GWX

Hmm, I haven't checked the actual performance difference between running SH3 Gen and not with GWX on my comp. I haven't noticed any difference though while playing so that is all that matters for me! Out of sight out of mind.

I get exactly the same problem, though mine seems to hit worse. I get reduced basically to 32x TC. Sometimes I can get it up to 64x, but I have to hit the "+" button about 200 times repeatedly just to get it to move up to that, and even at that it's DOG slow. Same scenario for when it occurs as well. I regularily use SH3Gen and I didn't have this issue nearly as much before I started using it, so I'm guessing it's the cause.
Pity, I like SH3Gen a lot.

i noticied this in the same situation and with burning ships in shallow waters with my actual setup, a heavy modified Rub 1.45. :yep:

Welcome aboard Probex :arrgh!:
What spec is your rig ?...in particular CPU...Graphics...Ram :D
I get this problem on some occasions but for the most part I can play smooth at maximum time compression.

I get an issue similar to this and I don't use SH3Gen. Just GWX and Commander 2.7.

I noticed this problem with me on my second patrol but it only occured after I sunk a few ships and then tried to TC at 4098 and my pc just slowed down I had to drop the tc to 256.
Thanks for all the replies.
If the game was still tracking a sunk ship or two then this is exactly how it would affect the performance.
I am running GWX on a clean install and SH3 Commander 2.7.
AMD64 3200+
2x6800GT in SLI
2GB 400 DDR RAM
I am sure that the rig is not the reason why this happens since it happens only sometimes and under a particular set of circumstances. I also run many other demanding games without any problems.
In light of the guess about lingering wrecks, would there be a way to manually FIX the saved campaign file and remove them?? Perhaps some of the modders have an idea?
Thanks in advance!
S!
I know this is not fundamental solution but a way to work around this is not use TC faster than say, 256... means needs to change the mind in playing tho...
With 1024x compression you get unintended "cheat" as the game slows down to calc the encountering ship, means you know there's a ship near without no report etc.
When I started playing vanilla SH3 as it was just released, I spent most my time in the map view and 1 patrol took about 5 - 8 real world hours. 2 years later now I installed those "realism" mods and less and less time compression... learned to "save" games ;) and I'm not sure how long 1 patrol takes now... maybe a few weeks or months.. Because it's like this...
I'm now chasing a convoy in 15m wind storm. The weather has been bad for 2 days now. I'm playing with almost 100% difficulty with NYGM mod so I never know how far the convoy is ahead of me. I will not be able to attack this convoy from behind obviously, so I will have to be ahead of convoy when I attack. But of course I can't do the dash now because if I do I'd probably be not able to track the convoy. The weather is very bad and I can't have any visual contact (it's 200m - 300m visibility in typical SH3 15m storm). And with the mod, the damn convoy changes the speed and course!
So, what I have been doing is, every 30 minutes or even in 15 minutes I submerge and check the course of the convoy and guess the speed (rough idea in relation to sound level of convoy). Mark on the map. Mark, mark, mark. 15 min is a short period of time for using TC so I run SH3 while I am working on my real job on the second laptop computer , listening hydro guy's report.
I don't know how long this bad weather continues but I have to continue this chase (15-30 min dive check) just not to lose the convoy. I guess I'm near to the convoy as close as 6 km now. When the weather gets better, there will be a great chance of the escorts can spot us immediately -- this alone makes me using TC as less as possible. Then when I get visual, I need to set up "attack course" at ahead flank.
So if I play like this, I spend an hour or two (of real time) JUST to chase the convoy and no shooting ;) But it's maybe kinda "realistic" isn't it ;) I'm not sure if I can "get" the convoy as I wish in... and when? eh, next week? lol
Anyway, this is one way of enjoying game - after lots of lots of shootin 'n kaboom excitement :know:
Ah, yeah, I'm getting older, lol :rotfl:

This sounds a bit exaggerated. Please check if you are using insane Intelligence settings, resulting in a completely messed up map. I have tested with the default settings, and there was never any problem.
Sure, sh3Gen is adding a lot of stuff that the game engine has to process, so of course there will be a performance impact.
But from the technical point of view, the maximum additional workload will be a couple of hundred additional graphic primitives which have to be rendered in the map. I am programming 3D graphics in other contexts and never saw a drastic performance hit with even thousands of comparably simple primitives, so if UBI's implementation isn't completely fubar, there should not be such a drastic impact.
I will however take this report very seriously and test myself as soon as I have GWX running.
Some hints how this could be circumvented:
-disable map output through Sh3Gen's General Options
-set your intelligence level to default
-close Sh3Gen when it's finished generating files

1.) After SilverGhost's post I have played GWX over the holidays, tested with Sh3Gen and I can say that there is no noticeable impact on framerates. The fps problems I had on my mid level system (Mobile Barton 2500 @ 2.2Ghz , 1GB PC3200, GeForce 6800 @ 370/800), disappeared when I disabled filtering in the D3D9 fix, but that is probably specific to my video card.
Sorry if I sound like I am defending my application, but I don't believe anymore that the additional information added by Sh3Gen is having an impact on SHIII,
2.) Sh3Gen 0.7.1 was released 6 months before GWX, and the default settings are optimized for cmpaign files I was using at the time, i.e. Improved U-Boat and such. Because of the generally richer campaign environment in GWX, Sh3Gen's default settings will give a much bigger amount of information than I intended. Sh3Gen 0.8 is in the works, and will come with different parameters, optimized for GWX, as soon as I have had enough testing time. Until that it will be necessary to lower the Intelligence setting to about 50-60% of the default value if you want the same amount of information as before GWX.
Hope that helps.

I have tested and have noted no difference in frame rate with and without SH3Gen on my setups.

I have used SH3Gen on Silent Hunter III (modded), TGW and now GWX and I find NO drop in the framerate.
