But you can't afford the risk of virus infection, esp. in multiplayer play, can you?

Try to set it to only scan for program files and documents, and no heuristic scanning. If you have a spamkiller try to disable it. I use McAffe and disabling spam killer and its module in services frees up some 40mB of ram. The personal firewall plus is another 20 mB of ram. Go offline and disable your Panda :D
