View Full Version : GWX Kiel Canal Waypoints

Would somebody please explain how these work to me? LOL
I have tried before to get out through the canal with the "preset waypoints" but never have been able to.
I hear guys talking about "patterns" and such but I just do not see it.
With GWX at Kiel I see a short distance into the canal a green point marked "bridge" about halfway down the canal is another "bridge" and at the far end I see "Kiel Canal inbound point".
I have tried plotting to each of these points but it simply draws a direct route through land to them.
Thanks in advance, I would love to get this working as I simply do not use Kiel at all since I do not want to plot manually through the canal every time out and back in.

OK found it under the navigators "search pattern" option.
Got the outbound course set without any issue and have set sail! Went ahead and plotted my patrol but the inbound course is not working exactly right. I set my last waypoint directly on the "Kiel Canal inbound waypoint" that is on the map in green. Then using the navigator search pattern option I selct Kiel Inbound and it does plot the course however it is off slightly and is more or less running on the banks of the canal.
Any help with that would be appreciated, Driving this Type IIA I expect it will be a few days before I am needing to plot the inbound! Plus plan on running this patrol when in enemy waters at 32X to see if this helps with the bombers hitting my boat before they are even spotted.

Try placing your sub icon (on the f5 nav map) directly centered on the inbound point mark---have sub facing 90 degrees---then hit "kiel inbound" under the navigator search pattern----should then set a waypoint course through the canal without touching land.
Also, just for note---set "kiel outbound" under search pattern as soon as patrol starts before moving your sub.

Got it. What I did was set last waypoint BEFORE the "Kiel canal inbound point" directly west of it and made sure my last "leg" was a heading of 090 to it. The first time I tell the navigator to plot the "search pattern" it runs some weird course down to the SSE. I erase all those waypoints and do it again and it works fine.

i had no idea this existed...spent ages plotting my own route whilst still having to avoid the bridges...oh and couldnt gi faster than x4 cos i aint downloaded commander yet :oops:

I did not either! I simply would not use Kiel as I said becasue of it.
To be honest in order for me to find the information I had to google "Kiel canal waypoints SH3" and found a link to the NYGM manual which ALL the way at the bottom of the .pdf explained how this worked.
There should be a sticky or something out there on how this works. All the other manuals just state "we have the Kiel wayponts option" but no description on how to actually use them.

which ever way your nose is facing is the direction it will plot the course. so you want plot your last two way points such that you are heading NE. 1/4 quadrants

I had the same problem when trying to use the icon for the outbound canal pilot.
Dozens of waypoints all going in the wrong direction.

An old question...
You're nearly out of fuel and it's time to go home...
First, put the protractor on the inbound point.
Draw a line 135 degrees (South West). Leave it there...
You need to put one way point on the previous line, the last one on the inbound point.
So your boat will automatically stop and face the canal at 45 degrees angle.
Ask your navigator to calculate the course.
That's it!

An old question...

Am I wrong or 135° (absolute bearing) are SE on the compass, not SW... right?
I use the protractor and MaGui.
Absolute bearing (225 degrees, SW).
But with the protractor, you'll see 135 instead.
At the end of the course, your submarine will stop the motors.
Zoom on it and wait until the center is directly on the inbound point.
Immediately ask the course to your navigator.
Never had a problem. Just be careful... and enter the final port manually.

Mmm... last time I have done the followings:
> put the LAST waypoint of a series ON the inbound point
> the course subtended by this last waypoint was about NNE
> while traveling along the leg to the last waypoint I clicked the KIEL INBOUND pattern
Everithng went fine.
I suspect that the parts in bold in point 1 and 3 are the relevant ones to correctly obtain the KIEL INBOUND course. Possibly only the part in point 1 is really needed.

I tried using that kiel port course. Outbound was just fine, never used inbound. But I have to ask, it seemed all I could do is a TC of 4! it that it. or is there a mod to change that? It took a really long time to get out of the canal. Very scenic, but very long? any ideas?

SH3Commander has the option of changing the TC preferences when near land or near other vessels. Collision risk but usually works.

I personally never use the built-in waypoints function. I use Commander to set " When Near Land" to 128x, and go through on my own. I like stopping and looking at the sights along the way. :sunny:
