Hi folks,
All ready to go with the new SH3 and I was wondering of there was a list (here on the forum) of U-numbers that players have selected, along with Commanders Names or Real Names. Sort of like a Registration Roster. Might be a silly idea, but it seems like people around here like the realism aspect playing, sort of role-playing if you will. :hmm: I've noticed players have numbers on their sigs (which look great btw, some great work there). Also great work on the conning tower emblems. Man, looks like I'm gonna have some late nights with SH3 :D
Good hunting!

In the on-line campaign Wolves At War a lot of the players use real kapitans' names. I let SH3 Commander select my name or make up one myself. If there was a registration roster of real names I would refuse to use it, as I have a definite superstition about getting a real person killed before his time. The numbers in the sigs are real numbers, of course, but it's kind of hard not to take a real number when that's all they used.
Hi, Generis71, and Welcome!

Gday mate,
like sailor steve said, Wolves at War runs like you're actually a part of the war - you'll be given particular orders, there is a chain of command, and more relevent here, you'll be assigned a particular boat - one which is not already inuse.

I tend to use SH3 commander to randomize a name that sounds good, and let my number be randomly assigned. I do try and stay away from famous numbers...U-47, U-96, U-123, U-571, etc. :D
Whenever I'm killed or I decide to start a new career for whatever reason, it's the same process.

I think most people tend to let SH3Commander sort that detail out for them...I certainly do

I don't. I always use the name of real U-Boot captain who happens to be a relative of mine: Heinz-Konrad Fenn. He survived the war and so do I. I was never killed when using this name. So you see I'm a little bit supersticious as well.;)

If my memory serves right Erich Topp mentions him in his book "Fackeln über dem Atlantik".:hmm::smug:

Some of us are in online clans, so our U-Boat numbers come from those. The clans have different rules, some insist on real names/numbers. Others are random and others insist on ficticious names/numbers. As I'm in several clans, I have a mix of numbers and several Kommandant personae. I don't think it makes sense to have a registry for these boards as such. And there'd bound to be replication too.

Good point. I should have thought of that, because these boards are already full of threads with conversations like "U-74? That's my boat too!"

I use real names,real pics(for sh3 commander),and real u-boat number.
Ex. I'm now using U-29 in 1940 and the commander is Otto Shuhart

That is what I do as well. I use SH3 Commander, and look up uboat.net to get a boat that did not do so well. I get a bit whacky then try to pick a baot that entered service the same month I want to start the campaign

Thanks for your replies guys. I've got another question if thats ok.
I've started a career, and the orders given to me for my first patrol put my grid at BE99. I was a bit suprised as it seems far away, for a first patrol imo. My start date was Oct '39 from Wilhelmshaven. I just wondered if it was normal to be sent so far on a first trip. I was going to select my own patrol grid, but I thought it was a little unrealistic to choose where to go. What do you guys do?
Btw, do you guys use manual data input for targetting? I've managed to get some torpedoes on target (before using GWX) and its a cool feeling to get them to hit, rather than the more automatic way of aiming.
Oh.. before I forget. The visual changes to SH3 are simply stunning. I've only touched the surface of GWX but so far its breathtaking.
Thanks guys
1) Grid Assignments:
SH3 and SH3Commander are poor at giving you historically correct grids. SH3 will give you grids that are inland, too far for your boat, in neutral shipping lanes and in waters too shallow for the type IX boats.
Choosing your own grid is not very historical either, but often it is the best option. Set the grid in SH3Commander and you will still get the renown bonus. For extra realism; never go more than 1 square away from your grid unless chaseing a convoy.
(someone write a grid selecting program! ;))
2) Manual Targeting
Some people use it, some don't. Personally I don't see much point in playing SH3 if you are guaranteed a hit every time with out putting some effort into it. Automatic targeting also means you don't need to spend time shadowing the convoy to get good targeting data; which makes the game too easy for a lot of players.
To start learning the process of manual targeting read this: **http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/
and start by enabling the auto map update thingie in SH3 realism options. Once you are confident, disable the map updates and have some fun. :D
3) GWx Graphics
They make me horny too.
**Note that you don't need all the tools the tutorial uses. The tools in GWx will work ok.
