Glad filefront came back up, pulling it now and still have part 5 to get. Going fairly smoothly should be up and running in short order. Reading the manual while awaiting the download.

Yea, just download and install uTorrent 1.6 from here: http://www.utorrent.com/
Then click Gizzmoe's Torrent Link on the first page of the Release thread, but I think the MD5 file is the corrupt one that JScones has noted. I'd suggest unclicking that file within the uTorrent options which you'll see once you click Gizzmoe's Link and download the good MD5 separately.

Well I'd like to know who I address my problems to concerning GMX?
1) Size is too big for 1028x768 screen with a tool bar amd even with the toolbar hidden it is still too big.
2) Night vision is too dark.
3) GMX freezes up when I try to apply changes when I choose German Speech.
Thanks Rob

@ Robj250
1) Size is too big for 1028x768 screen with a tool bar amd even with the toolbar hidden it is still too big.
I assume you mean that the toolbar takes up to much room on the screen and that once the bar is hidden there is too much of the bridge/conning tower? I don't think the toolbar has been altered from stock (size wise) but the position of the players point of view has been moved due to issues in GW1.1a.
2) Night vision is too dark.
This is monitor/graphics card related. Have a play with the settings. It's always a toss up trying to get it right for every monitor.
3) GMX freezes up when I try to apply changes when I choose German Speech.
This is a carry over bug from stock. It has been noticed before and is very intermittant. It seems that if you load a career and find that you have english voices then exit that career and try to change to German then it will lock up SH3. Try to re-load SH3 and enable the voices before loading a mission/career.
I hope this helps. You can get further help on the MODS section of the forum.

Yes...it is highly recommended that you have a freshly installed and patched copy of SH3 running to install GWX.Best bet is simply to uninstall SH3 and reinstall, then patch the game then install GWX.
patch the game.

Ok, calm down. First and foremost, delete all old files. This includes the SH3 file in your MY DOCUMENTS folder. This usually is the problem. Defrag/clean disk. Load the game and install proper patch. Again, the folder in My Documents is usually the culprit for this.

Believe me, AVEWarhawk is correct. DO what he recommends and there will be NO problems.
fredbass
12-19-06, 04:16 PM
The best way to avoid some installation problems is by doing a 'Search' on entire computer after uninstalling and doing initial delete process, to see if there are still any SH3* files left. If you find some, then delete them, then clean computer and defrag and install, clean and defrag again for peak performance when finished.

Im running dialup so will have to go round and be REAL NICE to my buddie who has the broadband and tell him how great he looks your looking well etc., the big grease Then ask him how about if he would like to DL GWX which is just under a gig. (guessing) :o

I don't think Codmander got any problem here. In his opinion, which is perfectly ok, GWX got a lot of eye candy but a relatively easy gameplay maybe compared to NYGM. And to some extend I agree with him.
Please don't post answers like that. Lets allow all opinions about mods here, that's what's makes them even better.

First, my thanks to the Dev team and all those who contributed to the project. It's outstanding work. I spent two hours downloading the thing but it was worth. I installed another Sh3 to just see GWX (sorry, I wasn't ready to risk my great crew, great u-boat and great career for something I haven't seen yet).
Now I stick with it, even if I have to start all over again. It's marvellous job. The execution level is as high as those of the commercial productions but even more complete.
To be honest, I hated the previous damage model. Having to wait for days for every merchant to sink was hampering the gameplay, wasting my freetime and wasn't realistic (well, not the long sinking itself, but the necessity for the u-boat to stay nearby and wait, otherwise it wouldn't be counted as a hit). Yesterday I sunk a passenger/cargo with a single torpedoe (I hesitated for at least 5 minutes before pressing fire though). It didn't sink right of the way, but it managed to make another 10-20 kilometers. I liked it, it didn't take real time hour and was fun. Then two aircraft appeared firing on me. Did you do anything to RAF? I've never been attacked by planes after sinking a merchant before! Great!
I love every tiny bit of this expansion. Just two questions:
1) I received a message talking about a polish submarine sunk by U-14 (?). I don't know if it's correct, but as far as I know Poland had only 2 U-class submarines, ORP Sokol and ORP Dzik, also known as Terrible Twins. Both of them survived the war and did very well as well.
2) Do the transmissions cover the entire war?
Thank you, gentlemen.

I have no idea about this bit. I think though that all the messages you get are actual U-Boat messages from the period.
2) Do the transmissions cover the entire war?
Yes, although as the years pass they are less frequent as the U-Boats were being hunted by the allies and were forced to keep radio silence
Thank you, gentlemen.
You're very welcome Sir:up:

Do the transmissions cover the entire war? Yes, but they reduce in occurance later in the war.

Well that depends on how smart a kaleun you are ;)
If you keep ending up in the game's traps GWX is hard enough. If you manage to avoid them NYGM will be a bigger challenge.
I'll tell you how I fooled a GWX DD. Submerged on 30m want it to pass right over me. As it is about to spit I order full astern and PD. As its droppings explodes in front of me I find myself in a position to put an eel into its rear using mag pistol. Good bye to that DD-crew :dead:
Don't think I'll get away with manouvers like that in NYGM.

ORP Orzel was sunk in late May 1940. Maybe that was the one they were talking about?
I must congratulate the GWX Mod Gang!
I downloaded GWX from Gameshadow. It took 100 minutes. In opening the game, after 15 minutes of loading a career, it gave me an error message and tha SH III was shutting down. Tried it twice, samo samo.
I ran a repair job on the remove programs thingie and started a new career. It took a while, but it loaded!
It was past my bedtime but I had to take a peek at the harbour. Woooo Hoooo!
The dockside band had improved. At 0700 hrs, the puffy strato cumulous clouds absolutely gorgeos. To hell with bedtime!
Ships tied up in the harbour and traffic outside the breakwater made the area look alive.
With traffic it made piloting the sumbie through traffic out of the harbour just like the real thing. Of course, took advantage of the gramophone to jolly the crew along.
The sea had almost that sparkle one sees on the water for real.
I stayed up 'til bloody late just enjoying the ride and checking out all the new goodies.
I think I screwed up by not having my other sub in port before dowloading GWX.
Now, I can't wait to see how the rest of the game goes.

I just took my fifteen minutes (that's all I'm allowed per day) to leave Kiel at 0016 Sept 30 1939. Man that's a long way through that channel. I took some night pictures of the first brige I came across at 0037. It took me a long time to plot my route through the channel. It's a little early to tell you what I think of GWX yet. But so far I like it. Can't wait for daylight. :D

I can hardly wait. I'm actually in a hurry to get through the canal, but I'll take it easy through there as I'm not sure whether my plotting through there is good enough so I don't hit the shoreline. I noticed another pen along the way. On my way to AN21, Next to Lerwick.

Before you even leave the sub pen at Kiel you can ask you navigator to 'auto' plot your course. The same way as setting a search pattern. It's called Kiel Outbound.

You can use SH3Gen if you are around 50Km away from harbours. I would wait until I clear the canal and go out in the open sea before used SH3Gen

Damn! What an uwful patrol! Just one ship sunk (that passanger/cargo) and now I HAVE TO GO BACK!
I'm in a middle of a storm, the waves seem somewhat higher than in GW1.1. The boat is behaving differently (I've read the mind-blowing manual by the way. To say it all, I've printed it and had a hell of a good lecture at bed. Thanks again, gentlemen. ). It's really sweet how problematic a surface navigation is now during a storm. :)
Now the reason I'm going home with a mere single ship downed. The last time I was attacked by the RAF, I sustained damage. There is no hull percentage which is a nice touch (by the way, is it removed from game calculations or is it just not displayed?) but single compartments have been reported to be damaged. The crew repaired them, so I was cool, until I had to stop playing.
I reloaded the game the next evening and I found sonar completely useless. It wasn't working. Not for the guy sitting at it, not for me. It gave the sound, but it was not moving. Even the volume was blocked. Then I saw that all internal indicators all over the place were damaged. I've run a fast check of all the systems and everything was "functional".
I can't continue my patrol being deaf and with the storm in the surface. I tried to explain it to my character that it's a just a bad luck. The equipment fails sometimes.
Is it normal?
so far GWX is great:up:
its kinda slow but ohh well.;)

Hi shipmates,
The GWX is amazing!
The original sh3 is not bad at all but some parts of it was slightly disappointing. This expansion is a huge improvement, congratulations for everyone who took part of its development.
The only thing that still bothers me is the aiming system of the deck gun (I frequently use it against lonely unarmed merchants, why waste those precious torpedoes for such easy targets). The expansion did make some improvement concerning the gun, it is far more realistic (and difficult) to shoot from a tilting and rocking uboat but the crosshair is still stationary while the barrel swings like mad. It gives the impression that the aiming optics are stabilised but the gun itself is not. In the first silent hunter game, the crosshair moved in accord with the barrel, why is it different now?

In the first silent hunter game, the crosshair moved in accord with the barrel, why is it different now?
In stock SH3 there was no movement due to weather conditions/sea state therefore the deck gun was 'lazer sighted'.(what you see is what you hit) and you would not notice if the two weren't moving together.
Simply put, the cross hairs and gun were never sync'd, it's just that now you notice it.

The azimuthal angles are sinchronised (of course). The angle in yz plane (y is parallel to the barrel and z is "vertical") between the optical axis of the aim optics and the axis of the barrel must be held constant if you ever wish to aim precisely. If it is not, you can only guess what vertical angle your rounds will go. In SH1 you could set the elevation of the gun according to the target distance and shoot when the horizontal line of the crosshair aligns with the horizon. In sh3 gwx you set the distance then watch the barrel's movement and when the barrel seems to be at halfway, shoot.

Auto pilot?????????????:o I did not know that there is a function like this:o
RTFM :rotfl: :rotfl: LOL
That Kiel plotting mod is from NYGM v.2.0 and originaly call "NYGM Kiel Canal navigation mod" but I can't find in GWX manual that explanation (maybe I'm blind).I'm not trying to critize but I think that should be in manual by original idea of NYGM team, or something like that. Some people didn't know for that maybe and probably think that excellent discovery of this is by GW team. Tell me if I'm wrong, maybe I can't find that in manual.

Yes mate just after you fire up your engines and leave your berth just click on the navagation button then patrol coruses tab and you will see kiel in and kiel out tabs just click on the kiel out one and it will auto plot your course through the cannal.
On your way back you will see on the map a point call kiel inbound when you get there just click the kiel inbound tab and it will auto plot your course back through the canal.

Well, You should first do this: click on your navigator officer icon, then search pattern and then Kiel Outbound, You must do this when you start (when your sub is docked and not moving, because You only then have a precise plotting. Then You have to order speed and then again on navigator and select option return to the course.
Also when You return through the Kiel canal, you must be in 90 degree course to the last dot named in map (in GWX "Kiel canal inbound point), (in NYGM you must add x when you high zoom map on that place) and then again select navigation officer and search pattern and now "Kiel Inbound" option, and that's it. Enjoy in your trip. In NYGM manual v.2.0 is better described with picture, but the procedure is the same I described to You. I hope you will understand, because my English is not perfect.

If you use SH3 Commander mate you can even change the TC so you can go faster through the canal should you wish. Just click on options.

Are you runing with SH3 Commander?
Did you save your game submerged?
Did add a mod and not roll back commander first?
Did you save your game while in sight of a convoy?

I've always laid my own waypoints through the Canal, long before there was an "auto-plot. I don't see why everyone is whining so much. Just lay out waypoints, use SHIII Commander to up the TC to 64 or even 128 near land and go for it. It's really not hard.

The hull damage percentage is just not displayed. You do have that option if you use 'SH3 Commander'.
Don't save while submerged or near convoys or near harbors. That can always cause problems, though I'm not sure if that's your problem. If you have to stop under those conditions, then Pause and minimize to desktop.

Hey Rob,
and when are you goint to stop calling GWX - GMX:rotfl:
it sound funny.
Well, ya coulda taken the "M" and turn it upside down and den you would hab a "W" :rotfl: :rotfl:

I don't use SH3 Commander, nor any other mod. I wasn't in sight of any convoy but it's possibile I save while submerged...
Thank you.
p.s. ehm, yeah, I reloaded the game twice, but to no avail. I had to back to the port and start another patrol.

Hello everybody!
This is my very fisrt post in subsim forums, and is an honor to me post in this thread.
I've played subisms since i have 6 years old's (my father lessons, Silent service c64, etc). I cant find a word in english to describe my emotions (Im form ARGENTINA... sorry for the bad use of words:oops: )
Im just a fresh user of GWX (download yesterday), and here are a few questions about:
1) There is any way to bring back the orange circle that marks the sub position when submerged in free view (yes... i know, REALISM... but is nice sometimes watch for pleasure...)
2) Sometimes the speech of crewman is changed of language (im using Engilsh voices, then, sometimes, a german voice speaks)... do you have made change of voices ONLY on German's ogg vorbis files?
3) The new AI for Destroyes is very, very, very GOOD! What is the amount of time that is requiered for the DD's to listen again after a drop of Depth Charges?
4) Nothing more for now.... only: "MENS LIKE YOU, DESERVE A IRON CROSS FOR THIS JOB"... (im just :D with the new "sharp-fresh-uboat-like" controls!!!!!)
Happy Holidays for everyone!!!

Welcome aboard matey:sunny:
You're english is excellent.
1) There is any way to bring back the orange circle that marks the sub position when submerged in free view (yes... i know, REALISM... but is nice sometimes watch for pleasure...)
Yes, IIRC you can copy the Umark.tga file from another installation and put it into GWX.
2) Sometimes the speech of crewman is changed of language (im using Engilsh voices, then, sometimes, a german voice speaks)... do you have made change of voices ONLY on German's ogg vorbis files?
It is suggested that you use German Voices with English text. This is the most complete set and will give the best immersion. Besides, after awhile you will get to learn a bit of german.
3) The new AI for Destroyes is very, very, very GOOD! What is the amount of time that is requiered for the DD's to listen again after a drop of Depth Charges? This is one of the biggest changes in GWX and I think your right, it .
4) Nothing more for now.... only: "MENS LIKE YOU, DESERVE A IRON CROSS FOR THIS JOB"... (im just :D with the new "sharp-fresh-uboat-like" controls!!!!!)
No worries. I totally agree with you.:yep:

Guys, only now I realized I've never been really good at this game. Now that it starts being played as it should.
I'm in a mess. I attacked a task force, sinking an Illustrious-class carrier (it's night, northern atlantic, 1939). By the way, I wet my pants when I saw it. The approaching, calculating e firing torpedoe and the following silent immersion were all heart-beating.
But now I'm the hunted. There are two destroyers above. I'm at 140 meters and can't shake those guys. I can fool their hydrophone, but once I think it's over and I'm safe they start to ping at me. And they find me. I cannot move in order to decrease the shadow, beacuse even at slower rate they hear me again. Yesterday I took 3 hours of beating. None depth charge really hit me, but it's always been close to do it.
Now those two are still above me. The situtaion didn't change and I really have no idea how to get out of it.
Any advice?
p.s. those bastards seem to collaborate. One is sitting behind me, listening, the other rushes towards me, drops the depth charges and then goes away. Then pings at the point where dropped them. What a ....ck! :)

Hi Koranis1979,
nice moment ah?! I suggest you read the post:Bloody hell, this guy won't give up!, started by Camaero (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102449). That post contain very ussefull information.
Im reading post like that because something similar is hapening to me (pings, combintaned DD's movements, fear (my and my crew)... ).
May be, if you go Silent Runnig (if you not already are) and get far for at least 600m, then PD, then spend a torp, then prey, then Crash dive...
Good Luck commander, have nice waterhell

It's right the DDs collaborate, while one is activelly pinging you and droping charges the others use their hydrophones to track you, as they do in real life, the best advise is go deeper, silent running and set the speed to 1 or 2 knots to avoid detection by the ones listening with the hydrophones.

Have you got damage?
If not, goto 2kts and drop to 180 - 200 meters(or deeper). Once there drop to 1kt. This is the time when you need to use your hydrophone. If you hear a DD in an attack run you can raise your speed (for a short time) and make a course change. Allways try to stay in their baffles. Keep doing this and you will lose them.
I used this tactic last night when I had 3 DD's DCing me. I took minor damage and flooding but nothing to worry about. The key is not to panic and to keep a good track of whats around you.
FYI - Remember that if you press Z for silent running and you're running at 1kt it will increase your speed.(the amount of times I've done this:damn:)

Guys, im having long-shock-terrible's experiencies going deeper when a "pack" of DD's huntme. There is a question:
(Sorry about my ignorance:oops: )...
a) There is in GWX a modification about thermal layers?
b) SHIII (from box) simulate this effect?
c) How i get note of the beginin of a thermal layer? Is registered in some place? (like the instrument in SHI - USA sub's seems to have one)
d) How the Thermal Layer dificults the search of DD's? Is for ASDIC?, hydrophone?, both?
Thanks in advance, and keep doing the best subsim mod ever made!

Thermal Layers are only added when using SH3Cmdr and they are at randomised depths.
You will know when you have passed a thermal if you are using the stealth meter.
However, as far as the AI is concerned, once you pass through a thermal they can't hear you at all.

Agree, always thought the best place to be when dealing with DDs is behind the hydrophone. It's the best place for situational awareness (that is of course supposing one is not using the "cheatcam" ...:D)
Something else, had today my first GWX "encounter". On patrol in the Med from Salamis, patrolled empty grid, then hugged the coast between Tobruk and Alexandria. End of the day spot one Pyro and one large merchant unescorted (Yeahh !!!). Plan intercept for around 22:00, nice calm weather. Get a good shot at the Pyro which goes "Boom". Suddenly light and splash noises.. The merchant has spotlights, finds my scope and starts shooting from 700m away!!! Nice touch, scared the hell out of me as I was not expecting that.. (Got him a little while later though);)

Weren't german subs equipped with thermometer/thermograph to find thermal gradients?
Another:
I was able to get rid of so far 4 destroyers by rising to periscope depth at flank just after their dc attack and torpedo them from about 300-400meters, while they were moving away and turning around for another attack run.
Were the real uboats able to do these kinds of tricks?
