Finally got it and watched it this evening, at first I was not so sure about it but man it turned out to be a GREAT movie. Funny how alot of the sounds I hear from the movie I recognize as being in some SH3 mods!
I thought it was plenty thorough in covering a u-boats ops and the copy I got from netflix was a remastered one that the quality was excellent on.
Funny though as the copy had been subtitled but the speech had already been changed over to English but what they were saying in English alot of times did not match what was being said on the subtitles! Made it slightly confusing but no biggie.
Thanks to you guys for speaking of it, would never have seen it probably if it had not been for this forum. Was most pleased with it.

First: There will probably never be a better sub movie made than Das Boot.
Second: The English dubs suck. Watch the movie in German with English subtitles.
Third: Which version did you see? To really experience it, you must watch the full 293 minute version!
And that's all I have to say about that.:know:

Oh it was I'd say 3.5 hours long! First DVD I can ever remember seeing where you had to flip the DVD over halfway through it! Takes me back to the "video-disk" days. Am I showing my age? LOL
I do not want to give it away for anyone that has not seen it but thank God he kept The ghost around and I was floored at the end. You guys will know what I mean that have seen it.
Speaking of sub movies, going to dig up Grey Lady Down and I think it is "Run Silent, Run Deep". Have seen them both but it was many years ago.
U571 was pretty good but I really wish someone would make a movie kind of like Das Boot again with todays technology. It was easy to see alot of it was shot in someones bathtub but it was great for a 1981 flic.

I haven't seen Run Silent Run Deep yet but I hear it's pretty good.
Be sure to check out the movie The Enemy Below. Curt Jurgens (The German sub skipper) and Robert Mitchum (The American surface skipper) are both great in it. Gives a point of view from both the surface and below.
Plus any movie with Robert Mitchum is a-okay with me.:arrgh!:

Forget U-571. That one contains a lot of Fractual errors... Too long to list here
They incl. (A) ability to send radio message when submerged (as the German POW did)
(B) Everything in a German U-boat is in German, white lights stands for "safe" (I'm not sure about this one, but SH3 tells me that safe=green)
(C) Torpedo hit results in an explosion on bridge... must be Computer generated
and many more... (read it on another site)
Still, you can enjoy it, but beware of the errors. Don't be too serious

I am watching it right now... Thomsen always cracks me up!
There was something I was wondering about though. When Thomsen is being helped out of the bathroom by the Captain and Werner, why does he say "I am not in a condition to fxck" in English? (I am watching without the English voice dubs of course.)
I don't know much German so maybe that phrase happens to be that similar?
Where as i prefere english Dub..can't stand subtitles..By the time i've read the subtitles i've missed something that has happened Due to looking at the bottom of the screen reading

What a great movie, probably the best movie ever made in Germany and will most likely remain that for the forseeable future. I watched the whole thing today for the first time, too. Silent Hunter 3 gave me the sub bug so I ordered both Das Boot (Directors Cut) and Down Periscope. I've seen parts of Das Boot here and there, already knew about the end, but the ride was still awesome.

I could be wrong, I got distracted during a couple of scenes, but I think he was kind of peefed that he was too drunk to get it up and show that German beauty from the party a good time.

Actually, I meant why would he say those words in English and not German?
Also, I have been really impressed with some of the WWII movies the Germans have made lately. Sophie Scholl: The Final Days and Downfall are excellent movies!
I would really love it if they made a movie about the luftwaffe now.
a luftwaffe movie eh ?

Ha, I didn't even notice he said it in English when I watched it. That just went right by me. Good question though. I just checked the Wolfgang Peterson commentary on the DVD and according to him the actor was actually drunk during that scene, smashed in fact, maybe that's why. :)
I haven't watched Sophie Scholl yet, and I think the Downfall was a great documentary with a truly chilling Hitler. Either mister Ganz is an incredible actor or someone I wouldn't ever want to be around. There are some other great movies, too. Das Experiment for example (which I can recommend to anyone with an inrested in foreign movies) and Lola Runs are both really good movies in there own ways.
For me personally though, while Das Experiment and the Downfall had an emotional impact on me (mostly being pissed off) and Lola was an intresting and exiting flick, none of them were that at-the-edge-of-your-seat experience Das Boot was.

Stalingrad was a pretty good one (German made). Schindler's List was a very good one. The Pianist was another. But, besides Das Boot, Cross of Iron was fantastic!

Did you know? The same u-boat from Das Boot was used as the submarine in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc

Sounds like the "Director's Cut". You need to see the "Original, Uncut Version", which as Camaero said is just under 5 hours long.

Not to mention that it's a crappy movie from start to finish. The whole concept is preposterous. Worst sub movie ever.

I did not know that, thanks for enlightening me.

There's more than one appearance of English, in part for ironic humor.
My favorite (part-english) quote from Das Boot is actually "Not yet, Kameraden! Not yet!"

Yeah, I just stayed up all night watching the 5 hour version. There is just nothing else like it. I have seen it quite a few times now and every time I watch, I still feel the suspense, the joy, and the heart pounding edge of your seat thrills every time. It is just awesome. That's all I can say.
I'm still whaiting for the uncutt version to arrive in the store that I order it...Since September, :shifty: :stare: :damn: . Now and then I see the director's cut.

Indeed Camaero thomsen does say 'i am not in the condition to ****' in english, I have watched a great deal of subtitled films and that happens occaisonally where the characters say something in english, must be fashionable, ha ha yeah right

:D I have all the sub movies that were made, and yes they are great, a couple not so great and one that is a little funny.
Enjoy them all. Sometimes when I have nothing to do and want to get away from TGW1.1a  I go watch a sub movie.
