FIRST patrol Sep 39, using RuB and Avon Lady's setup. Great hunting north of the British isle. Bagged 3 nice merchants, continue around to the western approaches into AM52, AM53 and spot a convoy. Pick a nice spot and bag 2 C3's and critically wound a C2.

3 destroyers (escorts) pick up the hunt and hunt they do. They dog me for close to 4 hours. Finally I "hide" on the bottom under the wounded C2 and they lose the scent. Off over the horizon they steam. I wait 4 hours and pop up intending to finish the C2 off with the deck gun. I may get 10 rounds into her when guess who returns! LOL All 3 destroyers! They must have simply sailed over the horizon and waited. I quickly torpedo off the C2 and dive again.

This time they will not be denied. Just when I think I have given them the slip all 3 steam abreast of each other directly towards me! No where to run any longer. I get the "heck" DCed out of me. Take heavy flooding and to the bottom we go. Its looking like we might actually stem the flood then we lose the aft qtrs and its all over.

Never been killed on the 1st patrol before and the DD's showed some kind of tenacity and skill for early in the war!

All I can say is hats off to them, they hunted me down for around 12 hours and got the kill. All is well though because we are off again!! At least a "long" career was not lost.

Looking forward to GWX shortly BTW just getting the taste again today.

Thought I'd share the loss of U-36 with you guys, like I said have never been killed on the first patrol before or even 1939-1940 for that matter.

AM52 AM53 may be GREAT hunting grounds but another 100m or so of depth would be extremely nice in the area!

Amazed.

Looks like the C2 left their crew onboard and reported your position to the DDs.
Never treat Cargo vessels as neutral objects that you can safely sail around. Stay sneaky. ;)

Nice story :)

And yes, dont underestimate the power from early warships :)

In fact i was also suprised once when i fired an accustic Eel after an VW destroyer.

I dont know how he spotted the Eel but he runned in zig zag at full speed and i followed the Eel under water view. The Eel could barely keep up the speed whit the destroyer and was just a few feet away from impact. Suddenly that darn destroyer turned of his engines so the Eel lost its signal and went for me instead. (i was going at flank speed) and i was close to the destroyer as he have closed in on me.

Guess what happend, i blow my own boat up in the sky whit that darn Eel.
Thank good for reload a save :D

I guess i made what people would call a Bernard, yes i made Bernard :rotfl: :rotfl:

In reality, they could pick up the fish on the hydrophone, but (tgw 1.1a) doesn't seem to have that. Maybe RuB does?

Yeah I did not treat the C2 as a neutral or underestimate the fact that he would radio in that I was still out there but after giving the DD's 4 hours to sail off I figured it would take them at least half that to sail back to me. In reality they were back in like 15 minutes! I swear they just rode over the horizon and stopped.

BTW I reloaded a save I made just before that (not to 'come back to life') but just to see what they were up to. The convoy had indeed sailed off slightly becasue a radio report showed them just east of my position but their speed was listed as stationary! Apparently they sailed just over the horizon then stopped. I guess knowing I would wait a couple hours then go finish off the C2!

I just have never seen strategy by the AI played out like that before. Next time that happens guess I'll just park it on the bottom under the cripple for a couple of days!

Oh well, new career under way and so far 6 C class merchants are sitting neatly on the bottom. And only 6 eels have been loosed. So far a hell of a patrol!
