I was way into a great patrol, attacking convoys, sinking a lot of ships and nailing a few aircraft. Been playing for hours, but guess what happened...a 30 sec power loss. The pc restarted and is ok, but of course I lost the entire patrol data. How could I forget to save :damn:
I remember Aces of the Deep with it's patrol autosave which was great, too bad there is no autosave in SH3, they should really put it in SH4.

what should comfort you is that there was no autosave in WWII

I just save it myself periodically in SH3. Dawn, Dusk and after every kill.

Yes, auto-save would be excellent. Either at a specific minute/hour interval, or upon events happening (convoy engaged, mission accomplished, and so on). Scripted auto-save would be nice, too.
what should comfort you is that there was no autosave in WWIISo if Hitler had faced a CTD (Crash To Democracy), he'd be screwed.
Likewise with the Blue Fighter Screen of Death encountered by Luftwaffe pilots of Battle of Britain.
But then again, there are lots of regimes out there that committ Illegal Operations all the time without being shut down:-?.
The world's weird.

Will some of this be included in SH4? It should be, but I guess not..
Anyway, played the game during a thunderstorm, I'm protected against high voltage, but not a loss of power ;) But from now on I'm gonna turn it off.

Auto-Save in Sh3??? We all know the probs that occur when loading a saved game :) . I guess the developers took this into account and disabled it. There was a nasty bug that didn't give you credit for sinking a ship if u load the game just before sinking it. Imagine if the game autosaved in such a manner, you'd end up with 0 tonnage by 1945.

It appears there still IS a "nasty bug that doesn't give you credit for sinking a ship if u load the game just before sinking it". This happened to me in my most recent session and I didn't know about the bug and wondered WTF was going on - until I saw this post just now. Thanks Tach.

" I'm gonna sue them "
At first I thought this thread was in reference to sueing Ubisoft.
My fiancee is playing with the idea of pursuing legal actions against the devs under the "loss of affection clause" here........something about me spending too much time on the computer or some silly what not:roll:

Well at least she knows about your affliction/addiction /"little problem" prior to the wedding so she can go into it eyes wide open and knowing she will be an SH3-widow. What will you do if she says "It's me or the game, Baby!"?
Tough choice!! :yep:

What company do you buy power from?
You got the point :D
But I guess a power loss during a thunderstorm can happen anywhere, it's not relevant which company it is ;)

Kind of like an old bumper sticker I have seen--"my wife told me it was either my boat or her.......god I'm gonna miss her"
My only saving grace for the upcoming major life change is she's a horse person and we just bought a second horse--means more time at the stables for her and more time for me to indulge in my hobby interests:sunny:
ps:subwolf -sorry to have hijacked your thread.
pss: don't mess w/ the power company-with the regional monopolies they have over here-you might wind up playing sh3 on the computer using a hand generator or hamster wheel for your power needs.

IT's the A.I. that I hate, You get a dream convoy full of tankers and troopships with no escorts or have found that Task force and your in the perfect possition, and then it happens!! CTD!!!:dead::doh::stare::x:damn::damn::damn::damn:
Kiss good bye to that renown, wave good bye to the medals and fame and curse at the missed chance at getting that promotion!
CTD! Is there any other abbrevation that causes so much pian (when playing SHIII)

Years ago I saw this ad in a newspaper:
"Wife says motorcycle goes or she does. Either one, $500."
It's easy to say that no autosave is good because of the save-game bug, but that still doesn't help when you're two hours into a patrol and the computer crashes. Also, I've had patrols last many hours over several days of gaming. On the other hand, I've never suffered the "saved-game bug", so I guess I must be doing something right.

Maybe a generator could be in place.. That kicks in when the main power quits.. Or an APU...;)

You may try to buy a UPS system which allow you to have an extra minute time for data saving once the power is cut.
(That stuff is quite expensive.)
Or you can save your game often, although you cannot save when you are submerged

I got enough to deal with trying to start the APU on my type VII ;)

You can also buy battery-packs that will keep the system running for a long time during a power loss. They are also fairly expensive.
Go with a UPS system. APC makes a nice 500VA model backup that sells for around $70 and will keep you afloat for at least 5-10 minutes after the power goes out. They are CHEAP insurance.. because believe me, power strips won't protect your system 90% of the time. They don't help with "brown outs" at all, and they don't "clean" your power, meaning, giving you you clean, constant voltages and removing all surges, spikes and low voltage conditions (ie. Lights dimming= brownout).
I run a Minuteman 1100VA system here that runs 3 PCs and all my internetworking equipment with no problems. This one is overkill for most people and it cost me around $500, but to me, my systems and equipment cost 4x that and it truly does work. I just built this new dual core and would hate to lose it to a surge.
Don't let anyone kid you, a power strip/surge protector may last you through one power surge or lightning hit (that is if you own a GOOD quality one, not a $5 walmart special). Typically after that they are just holes to plug multiple plugs into.
Just my nickels worth.

I too, live outside a very small community in BC, and have had power problems because of the rain, high winds and lightning. However, I have been luck because I make it a habit of saving at regular periods, like entering a new grid, or before encountering the convoy and have had no problems with my saved files. I have even saved while submerged, but don't make a habit of it. I can only play about 15 minutes a day, so there are a lot of saves, but I use a single name and overwrite it unless something new comes up that needs a different name for the saved file.
