View Full Version : SH3 and Vista
I was wondering...
Does Silent Hunter III run on Windows Vista?
Has anyone successfully done this?

Vista is not out that I'm aware of. I would suspect that SH3 does not run in Vista but as XP had, you could run games for windows 98 with some converter program that came with XP. I think Vista has quite a few months before it appears. XP should be supported for quite some time so I'm not worried about Vista at this time.

i've got a beta knocking about from work, i'll run an install on an old hard drive and let you know. i'm wondering about this myself.
obviously the beta does not reflect whether it will work for sure but it might give us a clue.

Best solution is to not buy and install Vista. :)
Iam not gona buy it untill it have been out for a year and most problem is solved.
And its not necessary to install Vista if you allready have XP on your comp.
Only reason to get vista is if you buy a new comp. But even there i would choose XP.
Vista is to demanding. It require a high end computer to run smooth and also over 40 gig HD space. And as i have only a 76 gig raptor disc, vista is not going into this comp.
In fact Vista is more or less eyecandy and an security op system. Ive heard rumors that its a pain to enable and maintain all security that comes whit it so most people will not run thos programs, and whit that in mind there is no point to use Vista.
DirectX10 will be optimized for XP as well and i guess most program that will be made are backwards compatible whit XP.
So my tip is. Dont buy it and install it untill at least it have been out on the market for a year. There is really no point to buy it atm.
Just my 2 cents.
Ps: Vista is set for release in Januari 2007. Dont remember exact date but there is a set one.

That is a good tip Viking. From what I heard they were going to rush Vista out for Christmas but is no where near ready. They need to get the XP computers off the shelves as well. I would not sweat Vista at the moment.

I agree. Tons of bugs havn't solved and your SH3 may be ruined by a virus
What I think is that patched SH3 should work in Vista (just like SH2 + 1.1patch work in Xp) However, the starforce drive provided in SH3 doesn't work well in Vista (confirmed) and u need to wait for a new Vista-compatitible drive
OR No-CD crack (oh, no, taboo again)

I tried it and StarForce keeps it from running for now, no matter what I try.
Would it run if you avoided Starforce?

If your operating system is 64 bit, no matter if it's Vista or not, then you won't be able to play SHIII without replacing the starforce drivers.
I'm not buying Vista as it's bound to be full of bugs, give it a couple of years before I think about it.

The last I heard was that Vista will be out as a new install on new computers starting Dec. 15th. With the store bought upgrade due out Jan 15th. Alienware is already promissing a free upgrade if you buy certian models (high end ones).
SH3 runs fine on vista once you get around the starforce issue.

Thats what I have been thinking, maybe the price will come down too.

I tried avoiding it and that didn't work, now I'll try deleting it.

Do an online search. It shouldn't be too hard to find. If you look around at recent posts here, you'll find where to look.
That's all I can tell you, but it's there.

Pray tell, how did you do that?!? I could tell you. I really could. I could do it so easily it would be a crime.
Oh wait...:p
And yes SH3 does work in vista. I got it working myself... by getting around Starforce... in that way we can't mention.

:damn: Be patient ... SH4 will work fine in Vista
At that moment, after you will tell yourself that "NEVER WILL I RETURN TO SH3 AGAIN"
For Starforce issue, wait, until they develop a new driver for Vista
If u don't want to wait, just use Xp. Vista is a resource eater and your resource will be drained rapidly by it!!! Prehaps you are not able to play SH3 because your memory isn't enough for both SH3 + Vista
:rotfl:
Vista is a resource hog but it doesn't otherwise hinder my ability to play games, and I don't have a fast computer. I was able to get Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade running in a window with good FPS while chatting on msn. Vista is fine. In fact SH3 works fine as well. The only roadblock for Vista compatibility is that dreadful Starforce anti-piracy software. Again, if you can find the simple and functional method for getting around Starforce then you will be able to run SH3 if you can run Vista.
The Vista beta isn't THAT unstable. Not that I'm praising MS either. I hate those wankers and I won't be paying for Vista anytime soon. Im just saying that getting SH3 to run in Vista is simple.

With 2GB of memory, I've been able to keep everything at the settings I had them in XP.

I read some articles which noted that that many of the games played with Vista had about a 10% drop in FPS (frame rates). What have you found with SH3?

I haven't had a chance to play it but in the Source games (Half-Life 2, etc.) it's still above 60fps and there's nothing noticeable. I'm guessing that's how it'll be across the board since SH3 is far less demanding.
