View Full Version : Underwater cliffhangs!!

I was out on a patrol whit all my bernards and i measured the deep.
First it said 433 meters. Then i measured emediatly again and then it said 973 meters depth.
I become quite suprised cuz the difference. So i order a bernard to put on his diving suit and go down and take a look.
And as he did go down i could se that the bottom at 400 meters suddenly took a dive down to 900 meters.
It was a real cliffhang for over 500 meters and i was close to La spezia also.
I didnt know there was cliffhangs in this game. I allways thought the bottom decresed down in small values.
To bad i cant dive that deep whit the sub but it makes me wonder if i can find cliffhangs in other spots that are more shallow.
Would be real cool to use it and try to avoid the enemy.
Have anyone els seen any cliffhangs they can report?
:o:o:o:o Herr kaleun; BdU requests screenshots and position of this event....!!!:rotfl:

In fact i do have screenshoot of it. I took one at 400 meters depth and you can se the bottom just disapear. And another from 900 meters depth where you can se the wall go stright up from bottom.
Gona fix them and post them here in a while :)
Edit/
Here are 2 pictures. Its hard to tell from them but you have to imagine the wall goes strigth 500 meter down or up :)
I also think i can find the spot again so when i do iam gona take a map screen. But that have to be on my next patrol.
At 433 meters:

Here is the spot on the map.
I have drawn a black line that show the spot also but you can actually se it on your map for your self. Its just between the 2 lighter and darker blue area on the map.

I've always marvelled at the depth of this game.

Oh man, how much would it suck to be running deep, only to smack into one of those cliffs? Given the sensor limitations on the sub, and realism mods that give accurate transparency levels to the water (in other words, not being able to see anything but blue in the periscope) I would imagine it would be very easy for this to happen if you were in the wrong place at the wrong depth.

I hit one in Biscay. Took a little hull damage. ()

I wonder what file there is in sh3 that determine the depth of the sea.
It must be able to mod it.
Even if its a real huge work to put realism into it.
It would be so cool if we had true depth of the ocean down to about 500 meters. The subs diving range. Or at least in common fighting/hunting areas.
Then edit the map so it become a real chart whit depth marks etc that we can use as an accurate navigator tool.
Also if it could be possible to use the later active sonar ping to determine the distance to an underwater cliff or mountain when you are submerged.
This games never ceases to surprise me. Sounds like we need an oceanographic survey of the SHIII sea floor to mark out sea mounts etc!:yep:

wow!! :o
now we need a Bathyscaphe submarine mod. or made a survey of volunteers that sails around making sounding with atlas echelot device and put it together in a database. but we could need years and years..
the ships arrive to the bottom when are sunk ?? :hmm: could be nice see a battleship at the sea floor.

Sorry, you misunderstood. I was asking in which it occurred, SH3 or TGW?

Iam using Grey wolfs latest edition.
But iam not sure if they have modded the seafloor to show up in different heights than the stock.
So i assume its the stock even if i use the gw mod.
I had a look last night in vanilla and it is the same.

Would it be possible to give an exact location TarJak or is it as simple as looking at the change in colour on the navigation map ? (I would really like to see this for myself )
It's pretty much anywhere there is a big deviation. If you check out the post with the map I went where the map said it was almost due south of La Spezia then looked at a couple of other places and there it was again.

I really wish that SH3 had relief maps like this one, however they haven't done a bad job copying this.

I'll check it out tonight as I'm on my way home to Lorient in my Type IXb having dealt out some punishment to the Soviet Navy and Merchant ships/tankers in the Black Sea.

That's a long trip home. You stopping for fuel anywhere on the way or did you start in the Black Sea?:hmm:

Nope. Started at home port of Lorient, cruised down the Spanish coast, entered the Med via the Strait of Gibraltar, past Sicily, and headed north into the Aegean Sea, up through the Dardanelles, then through Istanbul, and into the Black Sea. Total distance there was approx 3400 miles one way. I think the range of the IXb is around 12,000 miles right? Ran out of torps and no 105mm HE deck gun ammo left so heading home.
Isn't the IX a bit big for Black Sea ops? I think the KM only sent II's into that bathtub.

I ditched historical accuracy in this case as I had not been up that way and really wanted to take a look though my current campaign was put under some risk. You are right though that the IXb is a little on the fat side for some of those areas that I sailed. I will probably stick to my Atlantic ops in future. :D

Isn't there a cliff hang like this at Curacao as well? I belive there is a pretty recent thread about it somewhere...

Yes Curacao is pretty deep for a harbour but I don't know if there is a cliff hang there. Loads of Tankers though for the picking;) :arrgh!:
