View Full Version : New Version of SH3
Hi,
Forgive me if this has been posted before but - does anybody know if Ubisoft will release a new version of SH3 without Starforce now that they have dropped using it this CP software! I am dying to play this game!
Thanks

Hello and welcome to SubSim:up:
I don't think there will be another version of SH3 comming out. Ubisoft is developing SHIV now and they will not 'waste' time in SH3.
If you do want the ultimate SH3 experience though try GWX once it's out in the middle of December :yep: :yep: :yep: :yep:

If SF is a concern, load the game and remove SF. There is a remove tool out there to remove SF. I do not know the link for it. I would not let SF stop you from running the game.

They ought to release a game called "Starforce : Revenge of the CD-ROM"

Don't even get me started on this! I bought my copy of SH3 off the net, I got ONE install, and I can't even buy another copy! My existing game can't even be copied to a disk, either. God only knows how I'm going to do an uninstall and clean reinstall for GWX!! There's just something inherently wrong with the concept that anti-piracy software and policies are able to restrict legitimate users to that extent. Intellectual copyright laws apply to commercial uses, not private use by the consumer. Just read the small print on the FBI notice on videotapes and DVD's. It specifically states COMMERCIAL use is prohibited. This situation is like saying when you buy a book, you can't take it out of the house, or lend it to a friend.
Best part is, if you do any research on SF, you'll find out the "uninstall" tool doesn't uninstall it! The company that wrote SF is Russian, and has a typically Russian attitude towards us, i.e., totally abrasive, obnoxious, and paranoid. Anyone who complains is summarily classified as a thief and hacker, and subjected to all kinds of abuse. Not to mention their reaction when a company has the unmitigated gall NOT to use SF. Can we all say "unethical, cynical, and hypicritical"?
At the end of the day, SF doesn't even do what it's supposed to do--prevent hacking of the game. Just from reading posts here, it's clear that's already happened.
I think it speaks volumes that Ubisoft won't be using SF for SH4. I suppose one of the big questions is how they ended up using SF in the first place, but I'm not sure we even want to know that answer.
My only concern now, is what I'll do when GWX comes out. It's not like $20-30 for a new game will kill me, but I object on principle. I could boycott Ubisoft, but I REALLY like SH3, I can't wait for GWX, and I think SH4 is going to be great. So, other than cutting off my nose to spite my face, I guess I'm basically screwed.
Thanks for letting me vent a little. At least now I feel slightly better!

I agree with you on that, when my fairly new dvd drive went spastic i blamed SF and went to their forums. Got accuse of been a hacker? And practically told to shutup. Hell, if a paperbag over my head was code i wouldn't even beable to hack my way out of it.:rotfl:
Funny thing is my dvd drive isn't stuffed, but it wont work properly when ever i install a game with SF if i delete the SF games my dvd drive works perfectly.
Keeping SH3 starforce free is easy, so long as you don't run the exe after install. If you apply the magic fix before you run the game, starforce won't install.

Boris,
Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that in mind when I end up buying another copy. I just wish I had known some of these things BEFORE I had bought the game, especially the internet version. Meanwhile, I think I'll take a break, and go play Steel Panthers for a while. At least that way I can blow up some T-34's:up:.
BTW, if I sail my u-boat through the Med to the Black Sea, can I sink some Russian ships? It'd be worth it to give up the realistic fuel, if I could find targets there.

Dan0859 where did you download it from? I downloaded my purchase as well from "Direct2Drive". I just formatted the HDD went to their site logged in and there it was ready to download again. I see nothing there of limitations of downloads. Also another link was directly next to the d/l link displaying my key for me.

Chuck,
I bought mine from Direct2Drive. Later, I was having some problems with it, so I went back to the site, and tried to buy another copy. After going through the whole purchasing process, they told me I couldn't buy another copy, only one to a customer. WTF, it's my money, and if I can buy "X" number of copies at "Computer Games R Us", why not another one from them? You said you formatted your HDD. I'm pretty technologically challenged, so would that have anything to do with it?
Thanks,
Dan
Jimbuna,
No, I can't, because I'll have to buy a hard disk copy of the game, and get it shipped to me. Then, I'll be able to uninstall and reinstall. Right now, as I've previously explained, I'm screwed:damn: .

Yep, usually it would be hidden in the registry of windows, so when u go to DL the server would know you have already DL this game when checking your PC. If you reformatt the PC, the registry is deleted so a fresh install of windows and new registry meaning no SH3 info. You could probably search for it in the registry but im sure they also have data stored on your harddrive as well. Yet ive never brought a game this way yet find it complete BS that you are not allowed to buy another of the same game? I mean you are paying for it so whats their problem!? Best way to turn gamers away.

Kiwi,
Thanks for the info. If I format my HD, I lose everything that's already on it, yes? Wouldn't that be a little extreme? How about simply reinstalling windows, would give me a clean registry? I've read here about editing the registry, but once again, that's way over my head.
Bottom line is, I think I'm pretty well screwed for the time being.

Try this:
Start/run.
Type in: regedit
Then you come to the register editor.
There is nothing that can go wrong here unless you dont start to delete folders or edit files.
What you should look for is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Ubisoft.
And then you can right click the entire Ubisoft folder and delete it.
In that folder there is the register key and when you install the game again from another disc it will write the folders again.
But by doing this you will erase all trace of Ubisoft from your computer ( or the register)

The fact that I can't mention it here should give you a clue as to what it is...

NEVER, never.
Because 1) Ubisoft is busily working on SH4. If they had extra time, they would make SH4 better rather than removing starforce from SH3. That's impossible
2) Removing Starforce means a new master CD since they will never make you play the game without genuine CD. This causes a lot of time. Also, many system files and starforce protected files have to be replaced, causing a lot of manpower. Futhermore, they need to distribute the new CD to the players, since this cannot be done through the patch (The CD is PHYSICALLY PROTECTED) Time consuming.
So I'm pretty sure that they won't do this, although this idea is GREAT

Rule of thumb:
Don't buy from the net if you know it will be in the stores as a hard copy. Some games just have a good shelf life. This is one of them. And there are a few companies out there that will not provide you with a CD after the fact. Steer clear of those.
I don't buy from the net unless I know I'll get a hard disk with it (mailed later). It's too easy to wait a few extra weeks for it to show up on store selves.

In general, I'd agree. However, I'm in Iraq, and going shopping at Ahab's computer bazzar can be hazardous to my health. That's why I bought it as a download. Now, I'm trying to figure out some way to do an uninstall/clean install for GWX.

Try what Vikinger said first in a preivous post, access the registry and delete the Ubisoft folder then see how you go. If still no work around then yes just reinstall windows and it will give you a new registry but keep in mind any software you had installed before will have to be reinstalled as their registry files will be gone.

You don't have to install SF on your system?

As I said, starforce only installs itself on the first run of the exe file, not during the initial installation. Now, if you somehow found a way to stop this particular exe file from installing starforce you could get around it. :hmm:
So just google that magic fix (you should realise what it is).
This is only going to work if starforce isn't already on your system. A reformat or some kind of starforce removal tool would do the trick then.
EDIT: Hang on, did you check your PM? I described exactly how to do this.

Hi everyone, - I'm a long-time lurker, this is my first post. SH3 certainly has a great community here :)
I actually downloaded a dodgy copy of SH3 from somewhere that had had starforce removed. After playing the game a few times and realising how great it was, I went out and brought my own copy - I've done this with quite a few games. If I'm going to get many tens of hours of fun from a game, then I should do the right thing.
Anyway, I ended up finding SH3 in the bargin bin in a games shop here in NZ. I installed it, patched it to 1.4, and disabled starforce as Boris has mentioned. Friends don't let friends install starforce.

Actually, if you want to play SH3 on vista this is probably your only option. Vista won't let starforce drivers install...
