View Full Version : Possible Resolution to Corrupted Save Game Bug

I posted this in another, rather controversial, thread, so some people might've missed it. I've been having intermittent problems with some saved games... the one where you reload the game, just to get past the "initializing" screen, and then watch as your boat heads to the ocean floor at high speed.

After loading this corrupted game a couple times, then rebooting the computer, etc., I was just about to give up. After running out of options, I loaded the game, and waited until the boat was sitting on the bottom of the ocean. Then I saved the game, exited to the main menu, and reloaded it. Yeah, that didn't work... SH3 locked up, and Windows refused to do anything about it.

A reboot later, I gave up temporarily. Walked away from SH3, took a breather, and started thinking about the problem. Started wondering if there was a problem with the boat's bouyancy. Wondered if high seas might have something to do with it. So I fired up SH3Weather, and changed it to July (I haved previously selected September when I first started the career). Then I opened SH3Commander... then opened up the original corrupted save.

And it worked. I've continued to play off the same career for a bit, and haven't run into it again to confirm a workaround for it.

So the next time that someone runs across this particular bug, mind exiting SH3, changing the weather with SH3Weather, and then reloading the game? Sure would be nice if someone could corroborate.

Nice one! Sounds like you've got it nutted. Is the test repeatable? I.e, if you set the weather back to bad do you get the problem again or is the weather always clear and calm when you reset the weather?:hmm:

IIRC there is a mention in another thread about this somewhere?

Yes, I seem to recall it being mentioned before in the forum that the crash dive to the sea floor bug was connected to a weather mod.

Tarjak has a point here. Can you change the weather back and the problem starts again? It would be interesting to find out!

The SHIII engine works in mysterious ways...

Excellent find!

It would... but in my excitement, I continued to play (and save) ;o). So if I load the saved game again, I erase about 16 hours of plaing SH3 straight, dodging aircraft and DD patrols in the Irish Sea.

The next time it happens, I'll try reloading it with bad weather manually set with SH3Weather.

P.S.: I'm going to try to find what files SH3Weather is changing, and make a backup copy of those files, when the bug strikes again. I'll load up SH3Weather, change the weather, then load it. If it's successful, I'll compare the two files and see what SH3 is bugging out about.

IIRC, it writes in the three campaign.* files...

Correct - just those three .mis files. :yep:

The only settings changed are contained in the first block, ie:

The SH3 Weather Readme advises to save your campaign.* files before first use in case you want to reenable them.

:hmm: silly thing,

the famous Diving deep with high speed bug,

before you save, if you just put your engines off and be on surface, will this bug occur then?

Interesting find, now as others have asked try to reproduce it if possible.
