View Full Version : CPU loss

Last night ran into some issues with Windows no longer loading and stating files were missing. Put in the Windows disc and it basically said everything is corrupt will reinstall. After reinstalling windows I was looking at a vanilla copy of Windows. All my stuff was there in Windows explorer but of course would not even begin to run any of it.

BUT my info was there, was able to burn up some CD's with all the things you cannot lose. Pictures, keys etc.

After that formatted the drive unconditionally and reinstalled Windows clean. Starting to put things back now after getting everything up and running and pulling all the updates from Windows update.

Of course first thing going on is SH3!! LOL But it is a HUGE download, killing time now in here while it downloads all 1.66 gb of it.

But no worries, The cpu is flat screaming right now after being relieved of all the crap that accumulates over a year and half. Looking forward to testing out SH3 on it and then of course my beloved Flight Sim.

Amazingly, I am really beginning to think a format once a year should be required!

It's like night and day.

I totally agree. During the year a lot of small unimportant files stacks up on the HD. Those small stupid files grows in numbers, and demands alot of resources...
I have to buy me a new HD to do all the backup on, or i will have to buy 50 Dvd's.....

Seth, if you throw away your p0rn
you only need 1 DVD to back up your files.

saves 49 DVDs ;)
or a new HD

When you do a format of the hard drive don't you lose eveything anyway?

whats the point?

The older I got the slower I got. Loved combat flying sims untill I discovered that flying is best left for younger pilots with better reflexes (hate hitting the ground at 500 mph). SH III (GW) uses brains with some reflex so now I love SH III.

We dive in bravery and rise in glory. May we never be forgotten.

Not into Combat flight sim but have flown it, I use FS2004 flying heavy airliners, namely the 767-300 but my copy of FSX (newest edition) is enroute to me now.

Probably a good idea to have a clean install of Windows before installing it anyway.

Definitely worth the investment for recovering lost data, even from a formated HDD.

Do you know by the way that you actually can restore information even after a deep HDD format, but it will take you i think a couple of days to recover all information depending on space  ;)

When you do a format of the hard drive don't you lose eveything anyway?

whats the point? The point is to clean up the drive and give buggy finnicky windows a clean surface on which to dance. After much use the information on a hard drive becomes fragmented, often to the point of causing severe slow downs. Besides sometimes you get a trojan you just can't get rid of or your copy of windows gets so corrupted that you need to completely reinstall and its always much better to install on a clean partition than over another windows install.

A clean format makes your computer run better. MUCH better. You just gotta back your stuff up. I am fortunate enogh to have two HDs so that when I want to format one I can back up into the other.

I also agree with a format during a windows install. Always do a "clean" install. Figure out some kind of backup method (DVDR, hard disk, usb key), and backup information whenever it's critical.

I never backup my system drive. I always keep a seperate partition, with a series of folders. When I go to "backup", I drag the parent folder over to whatever I'm using. Sometimes it's a USB key, sometimes it's a hard drive. However, I don't really consider anything backed-up until I finally burn it to DVDR. I also find that 6 months of a *used* Windows installation is really awesome uptime. It's also about the point where I'm forced to do a Linux install as well, either because the updater has stopped working, or there's a new version.

I will say that Fedora Linux tends to be easier for me to "install" than windows. "rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps" with a running yum-cache makes it easy to patch and re-install all your applications.

A clean format makes your computer run better. MUCH better.

I am proof of that, SH3 runs perfectly, not the first hang or even blip even in heavy seas close to a harbor.

I also just tested out Flight Sim, took me an hour to reinstall all my addons! I was getting 22-24 fps now they are close to 60! Thats running EVERYTHING maxed out in a mild snowstorm at Boise Air Terminal!

Took several hours overall but it was definetly worth it. Not only were the frames WAY up in flightsim but you can actually hand fly the aircraft like real now, no hangs or anything to mess you up on short final. I'm going to try to do this once a year from now on.

FS2004 or FSX? I know FSX is very resource demanding.. :yep:
BTW: I use a program called RAM defrag. Anyone had experience with this? It cleans up the RAM, and it looks like it works...

There are plenty of tools around that help keep things cleaned up without requiring a full format. Get hold of TweakXP and JV16 PowerTools. They have clean up utils that get rid of files you no longer need and clean up dead registry entries. Well worth it if you don't want to keep re-installing XP.

I've had the one install going without major interruption since about 3 months after XP came out. Touch wood (taps self on head).

Usually between upgrades, flukes, and stupidity, my Windows installations last 3-6 months apiece.

I recommend giving serious thought to Norton Ghost, I'm still running a version of XP that was installed quite a few years ago!:D I have 2 Hard drives and the second is purely a Ghost of C-Drive, when I,m happy with a system I delete the old backup & re-ghost, you can also use ghost explorer to get files out of the backup image incase a file or application is corrupted! Losing all your data can be a pain, such as email, settings, can easily take a week to recover & still have lost stuff that can't be replaced! Hopefully the transition to a new system goes smoothly!:D

Sober, it might be worth your while to run whatever spyware programs you might have. I was using the old version of CCleaner and followed the link to upgrade it to the latest version. As part of a scheduled scan, 'Spyware Doctor' found a trojan in the CCleaner uninstaller. Not sure if this is part of the CCleaner software or something put in by a third party. Just thought I should let you know in case you haven't seen it on your system.

Trojan.Popuper.Downloader

Threat Level: High

Description: Trojan.Popuper.Downloader is a Trojan which claims to improve your medias video quality. Instead, it downloads and installs malicious files on your system such as Trojan.Downloader.Ruins and Trojan.DNS Changer.

Isnt that what the Defragment tool is for on Windows 98 - XP2??
