I still haven't gotten a straight answer about some things about this game, which is disappointing because a lot of people here are very quick to point out all the flaws of SHIII stock and how to fix it. So, I'm going to ask one more time, hoping someone will either explain it clearly and/or point to a mod that actually factors/fixes these issues.
THE GREAT PLACEBO
1.) I'm starting to think that anti sonar/radar coating is a big, fat, placebo, because it seems hard to objectively compare how often enemy radar picks you up without it/with it. If there were some numerical value attached to it in a cfg file somewhere, I'd love to see it.
2.) Similarly, I want to know how far out enemy ships can detect your submarine by radar/sonar (as well as radar equipped planes). With this data, the anti sonar/anti radar coating could get some comparisons.
3.) The game manual says one way to evade enemy sonar/the only way to evade enemy radar is to have a smaller profile. (pointing toward/away from the radar/sonar source) This leads me to believe that the smaller boats (type II and VIII) are harder to detect than the bigger boats (type IX) because there is less hull to reflect radar/sonar. In real life, this would make sense, but I have no freaking clue if the game FACTORS these things.
With all the experience players have with this game, I would think somebody could shine some light on these things.
