I am playing SH3 for several months, and I finally got my career to 1944. However, the career ended just by a little accident
Just let you have a guess...
No sooner the accident took place, I took this screenshot

Also see whether you can figure out my U-boat type and conning tower configuration

Yes, you got it right. I was rammed by a destroyed aircraft, right in the conning tower. It is really a shame for me (I used the U-flak configuration).:damn: :damn: Oh, no! I have to start again from 1939!:nope:

Another confirmation that the best defense against airplanes is diving as fast as you can...
Looks like while the dying airplane is still in the air, it has already destroyed both your rudders. So even if the wreck missed you, you already had a little problem to cope with.;)

Nice dramatic pics there
But that's one reason why I personaly do like they did in real life and crash dive my a#$ as fast as possible.

They would probably tie Bernard up in the back and use him as a rudder.
(This was my first Bernard joke! I now feel part of the club :smug: )

Yep many a time lucky enough it does not happen all the time.

No, my defence can be said to be quite good. I didn't play "dead is dead" this time because ending my life here seems to be soo... bad and not heroic, I can say
Also, I realised I had put 23 planes down and renown gone up a lot!!!
Well, after going back to port, I still have 97% HP left, which the 3% is subtracted by a British which had hit the water very close to me (appox. 2m)
The only road to Type XXI is a type IX so that you can suck up pleaty of ships and planes. However, since I only got the VII, I need extra AA power to "compensate" it (I started my career in 1943, and got U-flak in October

peterloo, if you want to 'power game' for renown, you can shoot down 100 airplanes i guess!
But if you want to play this sim in a realistic way, you would more often then not, crash dive when spotting an aircraft. Like the real U-boat captains did.
This is suppose to be a simulation, not an arcade game! :D

Sorry for my greedy mind. Yes, you're right. It would be meaningless if I kept on destroying aircraft. U-flak captains did dive when facing strong attacks:rock:
I had started a new career as a result of it. Although I didn't have that U-flak again, I got a type IXB in 1940 in Lorrient. May I ask two noob questions?
(1) How does the game determine which class of U-boat I can obtain in the first patrol? In 1940 in Lorrient, I either have Type VII or Type IX. Is there any rule in the determination? :rotfl:
(2) Where are the favourable patrol grids in 1940? American had not decleared war yet until the end of 1941 and I have to kill 1 year before Drumbeat? :sunny: :|\\
Just a little input.. The tactic i use when encountering aircraft, is to order "flank speed", then change the turning dial into the "rudder left/right - dial".. then i press rudder full left/right, making the uboat go around in circles. This confuses the aircrafts, since they cant plot their excact path for a bombing run. It gives my men time to shoot them down....:D Just a input, guys...

Yes, I've seen many real life pics from the air of U-boats circling. The only problem with those pics is that on the bottom it usualy says something like "Evading U-boat just before it was sunk." :o
I have a feeling circling U-boats were the ones that got caught on the surface and it was too late to dive.
Maybe one of our resident historians can tell us more.
I don't dive usually but I try to be at a 90 degree angle from the plane for two reasons
1.Smaller target
2. ALL of my flak guns and be used.
Just my opinion here

when i first started to play sh3. yes i cheated. and played easy. plus i stayed topside and shot down quite a few aircraft.but after a while. you begin to want more of a challenge. and start to play a more realistic game. now i crash dive pretty damm quick.it takes far far longer . many hours on the pc for just one patrol. far more satisfying.but i like your pics of what happened to you.lol

I really like the U-flak configuration- I have it on one career. If you are ever in shallow water, sometimes it is better to stay surfaced and fight it out then get pummeled under water. Similarly, if I get attacked by planes when my batteries are low, I'm not going to get very far by diving anyway. But on the surface I can manually operate the AA guns and shoot down groups of 3 sunderlands/liberators before they even get to me. Since the enemy planes often attack in waves, and the dual 37mms have a constant rate of fire (no reload delay) I simply perpetually shoot down planes until I run out of ammunition, THEN I dive.
Quite enjoyable ending a patrol after shooting down 50+ airplanes :arrgh!:

Besides asking for trouble, what would you be doing in shallow waters by daylight in a place with air cover ?:o

Three times so far. :damn:
X2 out right by aircraft.
X1 by a lot of damage that I had no time to repair thanks to a Destroyer heading my way, crashed dived and good night.

yeah man, may career would be over. Weather I go down in a blaze of glory or someone leaves the toilet valve open(Bernard) thus sinking the boat, dead is dead . I do not pass go nor do I collect $200.00. My career starts all over again.

An evidence that the better tactic is dive as soon as possible, :hmm:
flak boats where a mistake and aircraft learn kick how concentrate the attack from different places at once or request destroyers support.
when the destroyer arrives ,the sub is pinned down, the speed reduced, and the heavy aditional structure is a huge weight in case of flooding. u-boat is now a fish in a barrel. :dead:
if the game allows you shot down 5 or more aircrafts in a row , some thing is really bad .:shifty: :nope:
shoot down planes is for luftwaffe and big ships.

Lessee . . . perforated ballast tanks that you're trying to weld . . . damaged or destroyed air compressor, along with empty compressed air tanks, making it fatal to dive . . . destroyed or jammed dive planes, again making it difficult if not impossible to dive . . . completely depleted batteries, or destroyed batteries, making surface travel your only option . . .
