as i am working with hydrophone a lot (playing the stock game), i wish to ask if you are able to discriminate the propeler sound of different ships? i am pretty sure that everyone is capable to say whether the contact is a warship or a merchant, a tug boat or a C2... but can you hear the difference between the tanker/liner, C3/coastal merchant and so on, even if the target is more than 30 km from your position? progressively, i learn to ID the ships just by sound and i can tell you, if you do this often, it is worth it! i also count the RPM to determinate the speed of contact.

however, i dont play NYGM/TGW (IIRC, the propeler sounds have been modified there) so i wonder if this would be possible...

Not good enough to tell what ship, but I can get a good guess- if I hear lower-pitched, slow prop sounds, I'm assuming a big ship OR more likely, a merchant. If the props sound rapid, I'll assume a warship (since I don't usually see merchants go more than 10 knots)

Well, shoot him, lol. If he shoots at you with the big guns, get out of there fast. If not A PWNAGE! LOL
Seriously, if you aren't sure when you detect it, set periscope depth and check it. DO NOT SURFACE. If it is a hostile that is heavily armed, you have a very serious problem. Dive and hard to port, rudder amidships, and kill the engines OR go to ahead slow. Rig for silence and use decoys to play dead IF he picked YOU up first. Then, run like you've got a rabid cougar chasing you.

Sorry, this is OT.... Is it possible to mod so the seagulls could actually take a c*@p at those guys in the conning tower...?

Speaking of that, where are the fish or wrecks of ships from battles long ago? I go to the Jutland area AND NOTHING! The Battle Of Jutland was the largest naval battle in World War 1, and there isn't even a single piece of wreckage! I'd settle for a piece of metal lying on the bottom.
