I'm going to dwelve on 2 issues here :
1)While the renown system in SH3 is an interesting touch and does help in customising your submarines, I feel this is highly unrealistic. I mean really, Kaleun's never did have much of a choice in choosing submarines, it would have been better if BDU awarded you a submarine that they think you deserve.
In AOTD, you would be awarded a new submarine (as an option) depending on your performance , this I believe was more realistic.
2)Exclusion of an officer's club
Well, this little thing from AOTD was an interesting touch, you could visit this club when u were in port, and get an outlook on the war. Events such as Prien's foray into Scapa flow would be discussed , it'd help you to know Germany's situation atleast. (try visiting the club in 1943-44 and you'll see everyone in a really morbid mood).
Maybe there should be something like this in GWX?? If at all that's possible, or maybe I'm just asking too much.

This renown system has always reminded me of arcade type games when you access to hidden functions/vehicles/tracks if you do it right. This is probably one of the main reasons why I stick to playing the NYGM mod where it takes time for fitting new equipment on your boat and trials at sea.

I think that would be a great idea Tachyon!
If I'm not mistaken, the 'commander' mod has an officer club feature, but I might be wrong.

It's been too long since I played AOTD (loved that game in its time though) so I can't remember exactly how that worked. However, since renown in SH3 is basically awarded based on longevity (in terms of patrols completed -survival being at least some measure of success) and sinkings (the ultimate measure of performance), I don't see why SH3 renown would be viewed as any less realistic than being "awarded a new submarine (as an option) depending on your performance".

The officer's club feature of SH3 Commander does a pretty good job of this - I'm sure it could be beefed up with the addition of more extensive/in-depth content, but it's been a welcome addition and is just one more cool feature of this "must-have" add-on.

Customising one's own submarine (except for emblems) was forbidden for Kaleuns I believe. You don't see that IRL during the WW2.

Your not customising it but upgrading it

Yes, subs were upgraded as the war went on. The better-performing captains were assumed to get the upgrades first, which is where the renown system comes from. I agree, a performance-based award system might have been better.
I still hated seeing the "points awards", even in AOD.

Your not customising it but upgrading it
That's what I meant really, you never did have the choice to upgrade IRL. Bottomline was, take it or leave it.
From a realism perspective the points system is less than ideal, however some way of tracking success and progress is necessary if nothing other than to provide a mechanism for handing out promotions and awards.
I like the NYGM tonnage model as this reflects the main metric the Kreigsmarine and the RN used as a yardstick on how they were performing. I think that upgrades should be handled more by an offer of an upgrade or even in some cases have the upgrade forced on you but "spending" renown on things doesn't make much sense to me.
