View Full Version : How Do You Take Your Prey?

This has always been one of my favorite questions to ask on these websites. To clerify, how do you like to sink your enemies? I usually go for the rudder section so I can cripple my quarry by cutting off his mode of proper navigation and speed regulation. This is where the fun begins. I may soften him up by spraying his decks with AA or deckgun shells. Sometimes I'll take my time on his hull with torpedoes. My favorite is to reload my tubes and launch a full frontal salvo against the ship. Good old fashion pwnage.

Preferably a two torpedoe spread at point blank, submerged. Just to make sure.

Hopefully break his back and he'll be on his way down before I can surface or he can call for help.

Kind of expensive fun...;) What version do you play ? The rudder section is risky because of all the round parts where the torp can bounce if hitting at a too great angle.
It is generally more effective with the deck gun to hit under the waterline rather than on the decks... but obviously you're not too worried about being effective...;)

I like to make it short, aim for engine room/fuel bunker and 1 or 2 torps do the job... I keep deck gun shells for the small things like tramps and flak guns for the PT boats.
I don't mess around with airplanes, my weapon of choice is ahead flank dive planes all the way down, rudder 20 to the right or left...

I take them however I can. Lone merchant... depending on how many torpedoes I have... either a single torpedo and then finish with the deck gun or I might wait to see him sink. I'm not romantic about it. I do my job and love it (sick fantasy of war eh?).

In convoy its all or nothin' babe.

Lone merchies..DG only, get her listing, move around to the other side and do it again ( I never waste torps on lone ships ) you never know when you will need that torp you have just wasted on that single ship.

In convoys--I like to take off their bow and watch them drive themselves under the waves--or at least their speed eventually drops and they fall back from the convoy so I can take my time finishing them off.

bad side of that--got a lucky bow shot on a fast moving carrier in a large convoy--had to stay under due to heavy escorts--carrier kept going-last contact I had--she was nose down and about to go under--but I couldn't keep up submerged so she dissapeared from contact before sinking and I never got credit:damn:

When I'm attacking convoys I try to penetrate the lines and use the aft tubes as well. I try to fire at distances of 1500-1000m but it depends on the particular case and weather. When i see a lone merchant I usually hit it with the Deck Gun to save on torpedoes. On GWX though even merchants can be deadly so I just stick to torpedoes and pray they do their job.

When I'm going after destroyers i try to fire at small distances (less than 1000m) with fast settings to ensure they cannot avoid the torpedoes. The general rule for me is aim, fire, dive, reload, go to periscope depth, aim and fire again :know:

I play version 1.4 for DVD. That is my strategy for a quick single mission. For campaign mode I take my time with them. First, I round their side and aim for fuel/coal bunkers to try and take 'em out as fast as possible. If this fails, I dive right under them and fire a stern torpedo at them. This can only be done on my account of Rudolf Hesse with his VII-C. Quite effect, actually. For convoys, my main tactic is to hit and run. I deploy decoys behind the convoy to confuse the escorts, and then come 'round to the side of the convoy. I fire and hopefully sink my target or I must repeat the process. In some cases I take it right through the middle of the convoy just to satisfy my thrill.:ping:

Ok you're playing stock game... this explains why you can afford to shoot anywhere with the deck gun... didn't get it in the beginning.

Did I just hear you say "Rudolf Hess"?? Lol... the last person you'd expect to join the Kriegsmarine. And how in hell do you do an Otto Kretschmer style attack , namely attacking them smack in the middle?

I mean, I've never tried it because I'm too scared of the Escorts

Whoops, typo. It's "Hesse".

It's actually pretty easy to do that maneuver. On NYGM, flooding usually (well, always) reduces their speed somewhat. Well, once you go for their side, launch a fish and wait for the impact, go down to about 30-40 meters and set for periscope depth. Get it ready. When you reach periscope depth turn around to see if your target is quickly sinking (who knows, you may have managed to destroy the bulkheads; we wouldn't want to waste a perfectly good torpedo in campaign mode, now would we?). If not (say it misfired and bounced off the side or was a dud), then arm the stern torpedo tube and wait until you are about 500-575 meters away from the ship. Fire stern and enjoy the grand finale!

NOTE: It is imperative that you DO NOT launch more than one torpedo if you are NOT sure if the angle for attack is correct (be prepared for them to bounce off the side and sink into the deep). Keep in mind that the best attack range is about 500-1000 meters. Also, don't dive at the last moment. I needn't inform you of the terrible damage your U-Boat will suffer MOST of which will not be repairable IF you don't sink first.

Make mine a double :()1:

I take em anyway it's safe to...depending on a multitude of circumstances :yep:
If they drop out of convoy then I come back for them after there's no tankers left (go for the biggest and let the escorts look after the small fry)

I aim for the weak points (Fuel bunkers) and try to get them under in one shot. If they are a lone merch and they don't go after that I'll sometime surface and finish the job with the DG.

In a convoy I'll use another fish on them after getting to a better firing position. Sometimes that means dropping off the convoy and racing out to get ahead before slipping inside the convoy again.:arrgh!:

A salvo, under keel, if possible, under oil bunker

Anything can be done in this way, with the minimum cost.

Also, it gives you good screenshots - ships with exploding oil bunker

i like to race ahead at range and pull up to get a good firing angle, submerging if its good weather to hide myself. get a nice angle and aim for just above the keel under the funnel, a c2 can be taken out with one eal this way. and a c3 with two (sometimes one)
if i'm at a bad angle or behind or infront i'll use a magnetic head and aim under the keel.
if the ship is under 2000 GRT i'll usually actually take her with the deck gun. 3-4 well placed close range shots under her waterline is usually enough.

sometimes i use magnetic heads to blow the screws off larger ships in convoys that way i can finish them later on when all the commotion has died down.
