View Full Version : I thought there was an "all hands on deck" button?

USS Sea Tiger

had th heck blown out of my boat, May 4th 1945 of all days blew all air,, surfaced to face 11 DD'd circling around me,, and could not find the key that puts all hands on deck to abandon ship,,,

fought it out as well as possible,, sank 4 of them in a wild dash,, but alas sank to a full fathom five thy undersea tomb lies,

and 0, no, niet, nein survivors.

Is there a key for "all hands on deck" ???
if so does this allow them to survive and be captured??

Not that I know of; they just kill you. SH3 Commander, however, among its many other functions, allows you to change "Dead" to "Surrendered" after the fact.

I'm afraid not, in any case, I appreciate your courage in taking on 11 Didos single handedly, although the best tactic would have been to run away.

Even if you do surface your sub, the Didos will :

1)Either Ram you to hell
2)Blow your conning tower to pearly gates with their cannons

They do have a 3rd rule : Take no Prisoners.

But, if you're looking to surrender your submarine, then I suggest you go play "Aces of the Deep" , it has an option to do that. Plus, you can send an S.O.S if you're attacked (but that's useless).

remember destroy and throw the enigma machine overboard first !!!!

i had a similar experience in gibraltar , i was pinned down by 10 destroyers and fast boats, but i when i surfaced i found a heavy fog, so i run away at 19 knts to the atlantic .

i found a single fast boat in the way but it was sunk with 37mm AA fire and 105 mm deck gun. one crew member wounded.

surrender is not a option in the submarine force, :rotfl:

I'm not sure I understand the last part of your sentence, were you sunk by the fast boat or did you sink the fast boat? Lol :rotfl:

And despite sinking, I'm surprised you only got one crew member wounded :o

Omg...that couldn't be Bernard could it? Of all the people....

Aces of the Deep had an 'abandon ship' button.
Once again, AOD doing it right

no, i sunk the fast boat.

i maneuver to fire with deck gun and heavy flak ant once, they only fire with machine gun at long range.

Aces of the Deep was a great game for its time. Too bad they won't update it to today's graphics. My main wish for SH3 was that it would feature a command to abandon ship. Unfortunately, it went unanswered.:shifty:

I had to throw away my old copy (I played it so much it finally decided to bust, LOL), so it's been quite a long time since I've gotten to experience its... eh, fun factor.

I really don't know why somebody doesn't come up with AOD2...probably a money thing.

Back when SHIII was still to come, and SHII was such a big letdown, there was a thread on what we wanted from SHIII. I commented then "Well, an AOD2 with modern graphics and sounds would be nice".

That said, SHIII with the latest mods has really grown on me. I don't think I would trade it for anything (except maybe the source code so all the stuff that can't be fixed finally could be).

“Aces of the Deep” I found mine buried in the garage right before I ordered my SH3, which was just recently……………..AoD was a great game for it’s time like someone else has said, but since I’ve been playing Sh3 I haven’t gone back.

Yes I admit SHIII is a treat to look, listen and play. To be honest if I had to chose AOD or SHIII It would be a tough choice...
But dammit, little (and not so little) things in SHIII drive me nuts.
Like, where is LaRochelle? Why is the water depth so shallow starting out of the bay of Biscay, I think it's like 30 meters
My virtual Kaleuns name is Christopher Werner, but I don't have enough space to type it all in, the grid map is not realistic...the little things like this.
Anyways don't want to hijack this thread, I might start a new topic on how I'm torn between these two sims.

I agree about the water being shallow, it was a complete joke to see a C2 Cargo which I torpedoed jutting out of the water with it's butt hanging proudly in the air.

To the last torpedo, to the last shell, To the last bullet, NEVER SURRENDER!!!

Always go out shooting- whatever you have.

That's great for an individual warrior, especially a virtual one who can restart the game but never really die.

It's not so great for the captain of a ship who has the lives of many others riding on his decisions, including young men with families.

True. But think about it like this: Is the life or lives of a man or men really that big of a loss in the name of the defense of your country? A sad loss, indeed, but it is nescessary; as long as men shall live so shall war.

Every good officer always thinks of the men under his command. It's true, sometimes a decision has to be made that may cost the lives of many; that is a commander's burden. The comments I replied to weren't about that. They were about committing suicide because it's cool; that is a gamer's mentality. A real commander who acts that way usually runs into a problem: in Viet Nam we called it "fragging".

There are some missed features in SH 3 we had in SH 1, like abandom the ship, take pictures of enemy places with the periscope, rescue shotdown pilots, launch debris, bathythermograph.... sad. :dead:

I have the last version of AOD,the windows version .

also the cdrom has a lot of information about u boats , weapons and interviews.

sh1 has cool options like abandon the boat in shallow waters, or special missions, but the pacific scenary has some differences.

photo recon, rescue pilots, where real missions in the war.

A definitive feature was the japanese submarines, i found some jap boat in the career and was the most intense experience.

like found a small night radar contact, a sanpan perhaps ?? intercept this and before i can identify the target it dissapears !! a submarine !! i run away until it surface again,
finally i guess his heading and prepare an ambush, sinking the japanese sub.

I really don't see a need for a "surrender" button in SH IV. I can only think of 2-3 US subs that actually surrendered during the war...and only because they were near total wrecks.

US crews seem to have been tougher than German ones. The Puffer went through a 24 hour off and on depth charge attack,(Though most of the crew was useless for days after it) and the Trigger went through a 12+ hour off and on DC attack. A German boat would have surrendered. Other US subs had their own marathon DC attacks.

One of the boats that did end up surrendering was the Perch...who went through 3 major DC attacks in 3 straight nights...at the end of the last attack she was barely moving...had all her tubes knocked out...the batteries were leaking gasses...deck gun was knocked out...both periscopes were out..had serious flooding, and the Captain had no choice but to surface the boat and give up. It was either surrender,or shortly sink from the cumulative damage. There was no way in hell the Perch would have lasted much longer...with or without another DC attack.

Instead of Escape or Surrender , there should be an option to raise a white flag. Then, your submarine should be allowed to drift within torpedo range , then suddenly the white flag should be changed to a Jolly Roger and all forward-firing tubes should be launched. Bwahahahahhaha!!!!!

I agree "surrender" is a bad choice, but "abandon ship" is needed. In SHI I was once crippled and leaking fuel. I abandoned ship a few hundred miles from friendly territory and was rescued, so my career continued. On another occassion I got off the boat in the middle of the Pacific. I died from exposure. A third time I ran out of fuel close enough to home that I got the 'Towed' picture. That was fun.

SHIII lost quite a few of the nice features of SHI. Calendar in the Capt's cabin, Abandon ship button, control over rig for red...

I'd like to see some of them back in SHIV.
