View Full Version : More 'Bone-headed' Questions
(1) Is there a posting or something else that talks about the 'mods' ... if/how they work together ?
(2) Can you have Grey Wolves AND NYGM both installed?
(3) I have 'flipped through the pages' of NYGM...very complex, indeed. Is it a recommended path for a New Player to pretty much complete a 'War' in GW before advancing to NYGM?
The reason I want to know these things is to avoid unnecessary Un-Install/ Re-Installs...

1. If you need to know about different mods check out the help guide http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96026 usually GW works fine with geaphical mods.
2. I don't think they work together. You need two different installations.
Try installing mods using the mod enabler. That way if you don't like something you can uninstall it without having to take out the original SH.
Is that the JSGME gizmo ???

Yup, mod enabler = JSGME . Just terrific for painless enabling disabling of mods. Although for the big mod packs (GW and NYGME), I think it's recommended or even essential that they be installed via their own install programs.

I don't know about NYGM but GW can be installed using JSGME. The only thing you have to do is to install (using the GW installer) the program to the MODS directory and then enable it using JSGME. That way if you don't like it you can take it off without having to uninstall SH3.
NYGM and GW can not be combined, you have to choose one of the two. (Or tweak your choice with other mods)
OK.... I'll give it a whirl. This game is a lot of fun, and interesting, but trying to figure out where to grab it is like herding cats !

NYGM can also be installed/desinstalled via JSGME, no problemo...

I personally prefer GW though , Bernard seems a lot less dumber.

You're on the right path, regardless of which supermod you choose. Before you try either, I highly recommend playing the stock game so you can develop a better appreciation for the work that went into the mods. One word about Grey Wolves - they're coming out with "GWX" within the next month or so. I'm holding off on trying the GW experience until then.
Jones Generic Mod Enabler is a Godsend. I've used to install a variety of mods and it has worked flawlessly. I also highly recommend using Jones SH3 Commander to launch the game, as it will give you access to a number of very useful tweaks.
Everyone has their own favorite mods. I'm using the following:
NYGM 2.2
6_dials_nygm22 (This gives you slide-out huge dials that are very easy to read)
1500 Meter bearing overlay
Enhanced Nav Map Plotting Tools
Fubar's crew skins
Fubar's IXB Splint camo (a beautiful sub skin - I'm using a screenshot as a desktop now)
I also recommend using FRAPS to capture screenshots and movies. It's a great little program. Note that SH3 Commander and FRAPS are stand-alone programs that are not installed with the Generic Mod Enabler.
Good luck finding what best suits your tastes. You've also landed in a great community! Congrats!

@Subconscious :
Good to find someone with the same tastes, that's exactly my config as well... I have the lot of Fubar's skins and load/unload according to the sub I am driving at the time:up:
On top I use SH3 Gen for the fun of the missions and SH3 weather to drive me mad trying to fulfill the said missions...

Ah, a man after my own heart! I have been very tempted to use SH3 Gen, but wasn't sure if I could use it with NYGM 2.2. Thanks for the tip! I've never tried SH3 Weather, so I'll have to look into that as well. ;)
Oh - and I fully agree with you on Fubar's skins. To paraphrase an old American Express ad, I don't leave port without one! I downloaded all of the ones I could find for future use.
Interesting name - Corsair. It reminds me of a story about the Vought F4U Corsair: The father of a friend of mine was a Corsair pilot in the Pacific theater of WWII. He had no "kills", but he was shot down five times by Japanese fighters. His buddies used to tease him that he was a "Japanese Ace". The really significant aspect of this story is that only 189 Corsairs were lost to enemy gunfire, and this guy was responsible for five of them!

Well, the "Corsair" nickname comes from :
1. My 20 past years devoted to flight sims, and today mostly props in IL2/PF where the F4U is one of the planes I like flying most when I fly US Marines- with the P38 on the USAAF side and the F6F5 for the Navy...
2. My hometown St Malo in France, besides being home of Jacques Cartier who discovered Canada has also a long tradition of pirates and privateers sailing on all the seas around the globe (which explains also the skull and bones flag on my subs)
SH3 Gen only affects your first save of a patrol and makes a backup anyway, it is not touching anything in the game code. You run it only once / patrol.
SH3 Weather does, but you can save a copy of your original Campaign files -see the readme- so you can just reinstall them if you're not happy. You get weather changes more often, corresponding to the month you're in - which you enter when leaving for patrol -and avoid crazy things like Heavy Fog with 15 m/ winds... You also only run it once per patrol.
PS : the SH3 weather driving me mad refers to my last mission - see AAR under post "Visit Bristol" from a couple days ago where the fog coming in and out and in again nearly drove me to abuse of the schnaps bottle in the Kapt'ns locker...
Well, thanks a lot, Mates... I've appreciated the input very much. Maybe now I can herd those damned cats! I think I'll dump out SH3 completely, re-load 'er up and see if I can figure out how to have everything set right.
Interesting thing I stumbled on a little while ago. I did a Reformat...'Recovery'... on this H/P machine. When I reinstalled SH3.. I got no prompt for The Number. 'Hmmm'. Then when I actually got ready to play, I found my existing patrol was there... saved as usual. "Hmmm".
Apparently 'Reformatting' the drive, using the H/P Recovery CD set does NOT include REGEDIT, where (apparently) the game files for saving, etc, must be stored. Far cry from 'Format C:' on my trusty '98 Flight Game machine !
OK, we're off and running. Flaps up. Set GQ throughout the boat. 'Sink...Sink...'
