Somehow someone is cleaning my maps between patrols... :hmm:

Have searched the forum, but found nothing else that the Kieler Kanal is a pain to
keep plotting (?) and as I'm now on my fourth patrol :smug: I've tried to transfer the
waypoints from previous saves... markings/rulers, too.

Need to have a saved file, so I plot a course to a first safe savepoint - picked up
somewhere you need to be 30 km away - and the last two waypoints I place in the
straight piece of the kanal, like this:

http://www.sfgpl.dk/pics/sh3/kiel-out/01.jpg

When the second last waypoint is passed, do a save and exit. In Windows open the file [your save name].map with notepad. It'll look something like this:

[Mark]
PointsNb=0

[Ruler]
PointsNb=0

[Range]
PointsNb=0

[Angle]
PointsNb=0

[Waypoint]
PointsNb=2
Pt0=1198611.47,6522727.04,-2.17
Pt1=1193689.38,6522739.50,0.00

The Pt0 and Pt1 are these points on the map...

http://www.sfgpl.dk/pics/sh3/kiel-out/02.jpg

Delete Pt1 and change PointsNb to 53 and insert the new wayppointlist like this...

[Waypoint]
PointsNb=53

Comments please, but so far I see now disadvantage of this?

If... this is useful and if.. I survive... I have a solution for homecoming too...

Using GW, SH3Commander and SH3Gen...

Yes the Kiel Canal is a royal pain to get through if youaren't using NYGM. However I am happy to report that GWX will include a plotting function similar to that of NYGM.

But until that day if your way works for you all the power to you.:up:

Wanted to say that NYGM had this plotting easy as a standard feature, but you were faster...;) Only thing is that to automatically plot the return trip, you must mark the end point when you leave and come back to it on an exact 90° course.
From your post, sounds like GW and NYGM exchanging some good ideas ? That would be great news...:up:

Don't want to say to much but GWX has addressed that need:up:

Honestly I hope they clean the canal up so one could plot a course and not worry about the hidden lighthouses and harbors in fact if they could make it just a straight shot with no turns and deep enough that you could dive to say 30 meters and avoid any traffic in the canal.

Just a idea for GWX:hmm::know::arrgh!:

Anyway was just for pointing it out, I never use the canal myself... Am not a fan of the type II tin can and start my careers in Wilhelmshaven by 2nd flotilla with a VIIb.

Guess it wouldn't look like a canal anymore... OMG 30m deep in a canal ?:oops:

How about a teleport button to warp you out of Kiel in the grid of your choice ?

There is more than enough room to pass ships in the Kanal
The trouble is the AI avoidance routines dont let you just pass close by to another moving unit
The AI unit will always try to avoid you and ends up beaching itself

The Kanal ingame is already wider than the original

Yes most of the German heavy surface units used the canal at one stage or another
I did try adding the historical sailings through but as I explained above the AI collision routines kick in if you come across one and they back up into the banks

Doesnt look too good to see the pride of the Kreigsmarine reversing out of the way of your humble uboat instead of just flattening you:rotfl:

That maybe the case but there is still the fact that the canal is so full of ports and hidden things that its impractical to use because you spend at times 2 days in RL or at least several boring hours tring to dig your way through it to save a bit of gas and possibly some in game time.

:hmm: takes me aout 10 - 15 mins to navigate the canal
If you use SH3commander you can up " When near land " figure in time compression
Or just alter the " Land proximity " setting in main.cfg

I have mine on 256 and breeze through the canal

If you use NYGM it has an auto plot feature so you dont even need to add waypoints
GWX will also have this feature

This reminds me of something I posted a few months ago...

Having never gone through the Kiel Canal, I thought I would be in a perfect position to test your statement Jmack [too bad tc doenst work verywell on the kiel canal], so for the first time ever I just left Kiel bound for the Canal.

I tested using GWX, which as we know has the bridge included.

Well, after manually plotting a course through the Canal, I simply set TC to 256 (at times 512), took to the Nav screen and cruised on through. I found that to sail through was prolly quicker than it took to plot the blasted route I was to follow!

I think this was an extreme test - I certainly wouldn't sail blindly through the Canal at high TC if I was being serious, but for someone who had never navigated the Canal before, I had no probs with it or TC.

In practice I'd prolly use the higher 256 and 512 TC on some parts, but a more cautious 8 or 16 on others.
IIRC it took 20 mins real time including plotting. If I'd used the autoplot feature, it would have taken me no more than 10 minutes total.

Back home from patrol 4. Nothing happened, but still a thrilling experience... :smug:

Now to finish this waypoint thing. The last waypoint is placed just east of Helgoland, like this

http://www.sfgpl.dk/pics/sh3/kiel-in/01 - at savepoint.jpg

The "Helgoland Mark" is for testing purpose only... it doesn't matter where you save.

Save/exit SH3 and the saved [savedname].map file has waypoints like this:

[Waypoint]
PointsNb=2
Pt0=930702.80,6485124.90,-3.64
Pt1=970963.00,6484627.50,0.00

Keep the saved Pt0 waypoint (ships position) and replace with this list:

Save the map-file and after loading SH3, it should now look like this:

http://www.sfgpl.dk/pics/sh3/kiel-in/02 - after loading new points.jpg

and you will have points all the way into Kiel harbour with nose pointed at home quay

http://www.sfgpl.dk/pics/sh3/kiel-in/03 - it ends in Kiel.jpg

The reason for me using time on this, is I know I'll have Kiel as homebase for a long time still. Probably will use Wilhemshaven some times as a refuel station, but the next couple of year Kiel it is...

Btw. thanks for the great pictures! Looking forward to meet "Big Sister" in the Canal :huh:

Re. GWX, a quick calculation shows that - with my current speed - I'm ready for it in august 2008... :rock:
