I started a new career and finished a few patrols in the IIA, then I got the command of U-48 VIIB.
Was this the most successful boat during the war, and the one they called the red devil boat? I can see on uboat.net that it had 51 ships sunk and commanded by 6-7 kaleuns, many of them got the knights cross.
Looks like it's a heck of a boat I got this time, I better survive this career :smug:

U-48... The black cat boat. Don't let Schultz, Rösing, and Bleichrodt down! :yep:
Good Luck!

Can't honestly say which boat was the most successful...however, the two most successful kaleuns were Kretschmer and Luth but neither of them ever commanded U-48 :hmm:

The Running Devil emblem was carried by the following vessels:
U_57...552...794...1406 and 2513

Did some searching, U-48 was indeed the most successful boat of the war with a total of 53 ships sunk, it was also for a period commanded by Bleichrodt.

Yep, I better sink em all, otherwise Donitz gonna send me to the russian front.
I'm in the office now to get enough crew, Bernard is stuck in the aft torpedoroom but I don't think he can do much damage in there. I will probably get him out sooner or later. SH3 I love you
Sink some for the Norsemen, will you..? And about Bernard: Just tell him to stick his tongue at the batteries (to check them for power....) Then he will keep quiet..

:rotfl: Well my last patrol wasn't much of a success. After two days at sea I was attacked by aircraft and ordered crash dive, but I forgot about the depth of 50m. The boat hit the bottom, bow first, all torpedo doors destroyed and some other minor stuff. I just have to return to base, Donitz gonna hang me when I arrive.
How the heck can I do such a stupid mistake :damn: Maybe I'll just leave the command with Bernard.
And I'm an airline pilot...
But I got a brilliant solution, I'll put a piece of tape over the C-key when I'm in shallow waters :know:

Don't worry, I am sure it happened at least once to most of us...;)

Don't think that driving underwater is a standard feature in the training of airline pilots, or at least I hope...:-?

Well, as you say, I guess I'm not the first one who kissed the bottom...
What I mean is that I can handle a 737 simulator without making a mistake, but not this little subsim. But of course the subsim is fun and entertainment, while the other one is serious stuff ;)

This is one of the many things that I like about NYGM 2.2: When I crash dive, it takes me to 20 meters. There is probably a way to tweak this in one of the config files, but I'm not aware of it.
Good luck with U-48! I had the same boat before I upgraded to a Type IXB (U-108, which sank 26 ships for 135k tons). U-48 must have been a lucky boat: It not only was the most successful, but it also survived the war!

I thought NYGM was a realism mod. I've never heard of any sub being able to do that.
But then, I haven't heard of a lot of things.

When not too sure of the depth or sure there is not enough, I got used to a manual crash dive, which is basically order ahead flank and the requested depth. Doesn't take much longer than finding the C on the keyboard. As the main reason for crash diving is the sight of planes I also add a 15/20° rudder on one side to try to get off line of the bomb run. After that I usually pray because I can't do much more...;) Of course you miss the scenic "Alaaarm !!" and the noise of the crew running all over the place, but well...

Sorry, Steve, but you've lost me. Why should there be a problem with a sub crash diving to 20 meters? Is the issue stopping at 20 meters?
What I typically do is to order a crash dive, then immediately set the depth that I wish to attain. This overrides the 20 meter setting.
I'll tell you though - that 20 meter setting can be a lifesaver in shallow water.

I'll answer that with a quote from a post I made in another thread:
Actually that was also true in real life. In a crash dive all tanks are fully flooded, the trim ballast water is pumped to the forward trim tank, the planes are put on full dive and down she goes. No one yells "Crash dive, but only to periscope depth!" 70 meters is about as quickly as they can level off in those conditions.
It's the captain's (and the duty watch officer's) responsibility to know how deep the water is under the boat. If a plane or destroyer is spotted close enough to warrant an emergency they didn't usually check the conditions, they just shouted "Allaaaarrmm!!". If they were near the coast or knew it was shallow they would probably just say "Periscope depth...NOW!"
