A 17-year-old US student has, after two years' work and 1,000 hours of research, managed to achieve nuclear fusion in the basement of his parents' Oakland Township home, The Detroit Free Press reports....

I could see some great table conversations at dinner:

"What did you do today, son?"

"Got a C in English, picked up a new CD and created a fusion reactor"

"You should have got at least a B for English, Son"

"Sorry, doing that electrical test ate into my study time"

"Well no more playing with your reactor untill your marks improve!"

I wonder if the ATF will classify that as a bomb? Or if the EPA will fine him for not having the proper permits.

No risk of nuclear explosions, this type of fusion reactor is known for being very small-scale and safe (also almost useless). The only dangers are the high voltage, the neutrons (damaging, but there probably won't be many of them), and deuterium leaks (flammable, explosive at some concentrations).
