View Full Version : Is the type V Falke worth it?

There are two types of homing torpedo. The main differences between the two are the minimum speed the target has to be going for the torpedo to obtain a lock (the type V is more 'sensitive' than the type IV).

In a perfect world, this means the type V is 'better' because there are more ships it can home in on, and more situations where it will obtain a hit. But honestly, I see things differently.

I think the type IV is better:

-Higher minimum speed means it is less likely to accidentally lock on to you
-Less renown cost (type V is 800 renown per torpedo  )
-Obtained earlier in your career

The homing torps are neat, even if a little more accurate then they were in real life. I like having one in the stern tube of my VIIC to fire at pursuing destroyers. Since you don't really have to worry about aim, you can fire it while being at max firing depth (think its 25 meters) ideally while crash diving.

I haven't received the new ones yet, but have been getting about 4 or 5 older acoustic torpedoes on each patrol and I'm not spending renown on them either.. Hopefully someone with experience with the newer torpedoes will answer up..

One thing I've noticed is that SHIII makes no allowance (or doesn't seem to, at any rate; I've never noticed them in game) for the Allies use of sonar homing torpedo decoys. The decoy was called Foxer, and it was constructed around 1943 specifically to counter and spoof the T4 and T5 torpedoes.

A single one can be useful if you really get caught. I have never put myself in the specific position to use one, because the escorts have got to be doing 14+ knots for the thing to work well (they seem to home better several knots above their listed capability). I'm usually too deep to fire torps when an escort is charging me.

The pattern running torps are a better investment for the majority of your magazine.

Shallow water is another great place to use them, if you don't have enough space to dive deep.

I love them when an escort is comming at you with blood in his eye. Fire one torpedo at 1000-800 meters and it will save your hide! Just watch out for Hedgehogs if you fire at a closer range, as they may take you down as you take down the launch ship

The only thing wrong with accoustic torps are you target a ship doing 9knts and fire if for some reason the ship slows down to say 3knt the torps will miss.I had this done to me Targeted a Tanker doing 9 knts and she slowed down to 3-4knts the torpedo missed and searched for a louder noise.

Some interesting information about German acoustic homing torpedos.

Well, if your target makes a speed change that drastic, you're liable to miss anyways... but non-homing torps are easier to stomach the miss. Then again, you can always do something (go to flank for a few seconds (not long enough to draw the torp back at you), or broach the surface) to get his attention, and get him to speed up, and attract the homer again.

One very important note: Don't be that louder noise.

Well this all makes me the odd one out!

I've been playing SHIII for about a year and have played many careers, some to the end of the war. I've tried out and used all the torpedos available and I say you can't beat the MK1 mod zero steam driven T1s!

They are so fast, get in close and your target does'nt have time to evade! Plus, renown-wise they are the most cost effective. 800 to 1000 points for an acoustic torpedo depending on the type and when you use one whats the return?

I would rather get in close and then use speed for accuracy.

Of course I get through a few boats and crews...............................

I carry acoustically guided torpedoes on board for my main means of hunting, but I do carry backup on my XXI. I'm thinking about trading it in for a VII-C/42 since it has a stern tube.

EDIT: To be specific on my torpedo type: T-V. I carry T-III torps for slower moving merchants and other vessels. For smaller ships such as fishing vessels I prefer to use the deckgun to conserve torps.

Well if you did that with 100% realism and playing DID, I would like to know the tricks, never made it longer than Nov 43 - starting Sept 39.;)
I agree that at close range fast steamers are deadly.. problem in 43/44/45 is getting at close range...

Have you tried damaging them with the deckgun? Aim for their rudder or stack. Once you cripple them they're tactically defenseless. If you run out of torpedoes RAM THEM!

I don't think ramming boats was a standard tactic in the Kriegsmarine...;)

Well, you know there was this one captain who rammed a fishing vessel and sank it. It was fairly large.:yep:And no I'm not referring to the Enemy Below (which wasn't that bad of a film).
