Guys as a real newbie to sub sims and SH3 I really want to take the time to thank all those that have helped me out on here. This is by far one of the friendliest forums I have ever been on and that list is incredible with my other "life" as a die hard flight simmer.

Flt sim forums are becoming more and more rude with guys I guess actually thinking they are Senior Captains with American Airlines flying 777's or something.

But I really see none of that here, you guys know what you know and share it in a way that is definetly not condescending but very helpful.

Down the road as I get more mature with the sim I hopefully can help out some guys that are new to it just as I am now.

In 2 weeks I have learned 100x what I learned in 2 months of owning the sim before I found this place!

Thanks again,
Chuck Gehman

I would like to second this motion!

The only other game I really play right now is a mmorpg. The people on the forums there, yikes. You could say, "The sky is blue" and there would be 85 people tossing insults at you for saying the sky was blue. Ask a simple question there, get reamed for being an idiot.

This place seems to have some really great and helpful people, I know I've learned a TON about the game just reading here!

EDIT: Ok enough with the lovefest. You all have bad B.O. Or something like that.

Like most submariners, we are at the bottom but always the tops! Yes, quite different forum to say the least. Heated discussions are usually mild! Besides, none of us has friends and by being nice people continue to talk to us.

Hi Chuck,

Its not just the FS forums its forums in general. The apparent anonimity of the internet breeds contemptious behaviour.

That being said, indeed this is probably the most civil forum I participate in.

Theres been a few shouting matches (flame wars) but they dont last long.

Just avoid the X1 topic and youll be fine :know:

Oh and welcome to the forums. Dont be a stranger.

Hey Chuck - you're spot on. I'm about as new as you are and I marvel at the great tone of this forum. It really does have the sense of being a positive community. I was thinking a few days ago about saying something similar to you but thought it would sound corny. Then you said it - and it's not. Thanks.

I'm a 54 year-old and have been playing PC games (at a relatively shallow level, no pun intended) for 10 - 12 years but SH3 + TGW + this forum is the best yet. I like SH3 because I feel it involves some thought and logic, a little knowledge of the sea (which I have), some maths/trigonometry and it doesn't seem like kids' stuff. It also doesn't require fast-twitch muscles in your fingers like a FPS. I'm hooked and am really looking forward to GWX.

(PS: Have you seen Stabiz's SH3 movies on YouTube - fantastic!)

Gidday Mr C. It's a very wet late-spring Saturday morning. My wife is away for the weekend doing the Kerikeri Half Marathon with her friends. THAT means I can play SH3 all weekend without retribution. Yeehaa!

Welcome to the forum! I concur with your assessment. In general, I think we have a mature and professional group here. I, too, have learned a great deal from the good folks here, which has greatly enhanced my game experience as well as advanced my knowledge of U-Boats.

I was a moderator on a RPG site for a while. The politics, arrogance, and pettiness I experienced had such a profound effect upon me that I stopped playing the game entirely almost three years ago.

The subsim group, relative to my past experiences, is like a breath of fresh air.

Oh, and you may periodically hear rumors about a supermod called "GWX". I think it's a long-standing hoax, as I haven't seen anything other than a monstrous carrot on a stick. ;)

To add my $0.02, I'd echo the sentiments of everyone else. This forum has been a great place to trade "war stories" and share tactics and information. I've learned so much from the posters here, and I constantly try to give back to the community by sharing what I know. All in all, this is a great place! :yep:

The replies this thread has recieved is exactly why I posted in the first place.

I understand there have probably been a few "wars" in here before but you guys should visit some of my flightsim forums. A few got so bad I just do not even use them anymore!

Really though the help to the noobs is what makes this one great. I have not seen one post of someone accusing a noob of being stupid (putting it plainly) for asking something. Even when they ask something that is stupid! (plainly again). I read over some of the questions and think "RTFM, RTFM, RTFM" but you guys take it in stride and answer the same old newbie questions for probably the 100th time. And in turn that noob begins a big asset to the community and maybe one day turns out mods like RuB and TGW, NYGM etc. whereas basically in the flightsim community they get jumped on for being stupid then just delete the sim and move on to something else. I think in their defense though the FS guys seem to think everyone must be a real pilot to be flying the sim and should know things in the first place whereas I do not think hardly any of us can say that we are "real" u-boat drivers. I say "hardly" because I think this forum has no age limit!

Herr Warner could be lurking in here and laughing at some of the things we come up with and thinking to himself "in the real world....they are all dead men!"

But excellent work in here by everyone, I post a question, go cruise a patrol come back and have 5-10 responses. And I know my questions are ridiculous!

I totally agree with what is said about this forum and take the opportunity to jump in, after reading in here regularly for quite a time, learning lots of things about the game together with a lot of good laughs at some threads.
To shortly introduce myself, I am 54, born in France and live at the moment in South Germany. My hometown Saint Malo has a long tradition of attacking and sinking british ships since a few centuries... Always been interested in WWII history and played many types of games around this era, be it flight sims (still fly IL2/PF regularly) tactical games (Combat mission series) board games (ASL) or naval games. I started sub sims with Silent Service on my C64... Have played SH3 since it came out, mostly with the RuB mods. At this time I play NYGM 2.2, and will sure give a try at GWX when it comes out, if my 2 years old machine can handle it. From what I read it looks well optimized though...
Like BdU says "Keep up the good work"...;)

Although they tried a few times (once even with an old ship filled up with gun powder and various metal parts - fortunately for us, they miscalculated the tide and the ship stranded before blowing up), they never could take the town.
Nowadays they found another invasion tactic : they buy all the old houses for holiday ;)

Good thing we're in the Kreigsmarine......being in a barrel had unfortunate consquences/connotations for a seaman of the Royal Navy (if you don't know, I'm not explaining it.....:rotfl: :rotfl: ).

I think one of the strengths of this site is that the average age is higher than most sites (I think) and the sim itself demands patience, so the "pissed off teenager with the attention span of a goldfish and a huge insecurity problem" tends to be in very short supply. Actually, I'm not sure we've got ANY, as opposed to the twats on flight sims (they seem to attract some real undesirables......while MMORPG attract the pre-pubescants).

OK, now I'm waiting for the outbreak of people attempting to impersonate those 'groups' I've described!!

One last thing - people on this site tend to have good senses of humour and don't take things personally. Most importantly, ratbags are very quickly dealt with by the community and moderators (who, while you won't hear from them often, definitely are there!).

Welcome!!

It is a hobby that is a ton cheaper than some of my other ventures!

I am also a student pilot and used to race dirt track cars here in Viginia.
I spend in 15 minutes what I have in SH3 in either of those ventures!

I hear the same thing all the time when people ask me what I get out of flightsimming.

Just respond "You would not understand!" LOL

...and that concludes our GWX commercial break. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. ;)

A friend of mine bought me "Company of Heroes" for a birthday present. I went to the Relic forums (www.forums.relicnews.com (http://www.forums.relicnews.com)) expecting to experience something similar to what we have here on SubSim. Wow, was I ever wrong....

Let me just say that if you really want to develop a greater appreciation for what we have here at SubSim, take a look at the relic forums. I've never seen such immaturity, blatant hostility, and complete disregard for the forum rules as posted. I reported an obnoxious off-topic thread to a moderator and got absolutely no response. The last thread I read consisted of a fellow reporting his perception that the game is imbalanced in favor of the allies, only to receive several very hostile posts in reply. There may be kernels of knowledge to be had in these forums, but who would want to subject themselves to the abuse?

We have a great community here at SubSim: Helpful, knowledgable, and courteous. If only the rest of the gaming community could follow this example....

My heartfelt thanks to all of you for making SubSim a very enjoyable place to learn and share.
