This article from the Independent truly shocked me: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/africa/article1990401.ece

Some of the shocking statistics and evidence of what Mugabe calls "progress" for his so-called "beloved nation":

4m The amount the population is thought to have fallen since the last census in 2002. Current estimates put it as low as 8 million.

34 Life expectancy for women. It was 65 just over a decade ago. It is much lower than in neighbouring countries: in Zambia, life expectancy for women is 40; in Mozambique, 46; in Botswana, 40; in South Africa, 49.

120/1000 The infant mortality rate. During the 1990s, it was 61/10-00.

7,000 The cost in Zimbabwean dollars of a dose of anti-retroviral drugs to combat Aids.

50% The amount Zimbabwe's economy has shrunk since 1999.

2000% The rate of inflation in Zimbabwe. In 1980, when the country became independent, the rate was 7 per cent.

73m The size of Zimbabwe's tobacco output in millions of tonnes. In 2000 it was 734 million.

This thug of a dictator has taken his country and it's people down the path of misery, suffering, and ruin. :nope: :nope: :nope:

I saw a news item on ITV News it was shocking what this mad man has done and now he is one step away from genocide. And what is the international community going to do about him?

They'll do nothing.

And the typical response of most people who do see this sort of thing is to say "Oh that's horrible." Then they continue eating dinner.

Yes, it comes down to the clipboard.

Oil. NO
Gold. NO
Strategic Land. NO

And so on down the clipboard, result no action. :nope:

Along these lines, I rented a DVD last night. First film in a long time that brought tears to my eyes, "Hotel Rwanda." Sad, infuriating and also uplifiting at the same time. The film, for those who have not seen it, is about the Rwandan genocide of 1994 and how one hotel manager in Kigali (A Hutu, whose people carried out the genocide, married to a Tutsi) managed to save 1200 tustsi and hutu regfugees. An African Shindler as it were.

An easy cop-out unfortunately. Heck I heard some Bulgarian friends blaming the problems in Bulgaria on the Turks even more than the communists.

My parents were traveling around Europe in 1973 and met a couple from Zimbabwe. My parents asked why they were traveling in Europe and the replied that they were doing it why they could, because they saw a time where they wouldn't be able to due to problems in the country.

There is a couple who live down the road from me who lived in Zimbabwe for many years and then retired to Australia. They still receive a penison from Zimbabwe, but the cheque isn't cashed as it's costs more to cash the cheque than what it's worth.

A sorry tale that no one is free of blame for.
