View Full Version : Do enemy ships hit their own mines?

I was parked between Scotland and the Isle of Lewis (just east of Stornoway) hunting when I got a sound contact for a merchant. I set up my intercept, killed the engines and waited. The merchant was 10K away approximatley and I lost his sound contact. Up scope, and there sits the the merchie south of me flaming away and then sinking. This has happened more than once, and I do know there are mines in the area (found out the hard way).
So my question is, are these ships hitting their own mines or is their another U-boat prowling about?

Could have been an air attack.

Yes, I do believe they hit their own mines. Sometimes they drop a depth charge to close to the stern and blow off their propellors. Not to smart sometimes I guess...

Yes they blunder into their own mines. That used to happen in real life as well.
In the game Ive seen the ships shoot one another when they got inbetween my sub and another ship.
Do the PT boats still set themselves on fire ? I think that was patched out.

Definately not another U-boat. If only it was....
The only thing that would make this game better is actual game modelled rudeltaktik (wolfpacks)
I'd put my money on the mine theory, especially if you're using a mod that adds more minefields than what the stock game has.
Definitely could have been a mine. I towed a V&W that was giving me chase outside of Hartelpol (sp?) through a minefield. I made it through on sheer luck, he went boom.

Hmmm... Couple patrols ago I saw strange flashes in the distance, maybe 10+ something km or so, it was light fog (10km visibility). Every now and then just huge flashes and I was pretty amazed about it. So full speed towards it.
It was a large enemy convoy. And those flashes came from Revenge-class battleship firing its main guns. This was so strange that I just had to jump to free view and see what was her target (shame on me). It turned out to be another (submerged) U-boat for sure. Few km to port quarter from the battleship.
There also was one armed trawler and a fregatte, badly damaged and on fire. They were depth charging that other U-boat, near it, and were damaged by the battleship:doh: BB also had hit one cargoship, which was listing and slowed down, burning nicely. At least it had big blast-marks over her hull and deck.
Anyways, I got couple of screenies from that situation, so definitely, there was another U-boat. Only one that I have ever seen out there (outside or near harbours).

You're not running any wolfpack mods are you? I know one is out there, but I haven't heard much about it.
That would be awesome. I've always wanted to see another u-boat so I could jump on my computer chair and scream "THOOMSEN! DAS IST THOOOOOMSEEEEN!"

I have NYGM Tonnage War 2.2 and that's pretty much all...some Fubar's skins of course.
Heh, my scream went like:" WOOOOOOOW!! OMFG! ANOTHER UUUUUBOOOOAT! My real life "BdU" looked me rather slow and I was banned from the PC for a while and forced to go out for some fresh air:huh: So I almost got it like in das boot.
It was one of the greates moments with this game.
