Is it just me or have other people noticed a lot more spam and junk mail threads posted on the forums? I can't recall this being the case a year or two ago. Either back then the moderators were super quick to jump on them and delete such posts or back then Subsim was never a victim of such irritating and downright despicable online behaviour.

This is the kind of stuff that I have seen with ever increasing regularity here:
We are legitimate and reputable company from West Africa we have all brands of Mobile Phones,Ipods, xbox 360, Sidekicks,Nextels phone,Laptops for sell at cheap and
affordable prices, they ranges from Nokia/Samsung/LG/Sony
Ericsson/Motorola/Alcatel/panasonic With Bluetooth, all
Brands and Models of Nextel Phones, we want you to get back
to us with your quote so that we can begin a good business
relationship.
Note they are all Brand New T2 Euro specs,
unlocked, no operator logo, come in their
original sealed box, With 1 year international warranty
from the manufacturer, English & Spanish manual, Finland
made.
Special offer Christmas and New year.3 unit{From Any Brand Model}Selling Price Will Be $400 Dollars,With All Fees For Delivey Included.

Is there anything that we can do to prevent this or is it just a case of the mods deleting such new thread posts as soon as possible once they appear?

I've been studiously PMing the moderators with the link as soon as I see one. I never post on the thread except to say that I've done so.

I shut down that one in DW forum.

Would perhaps setting up a delay between registration and being able to post prevent such attacks?

They would come back later then. Bots usually attack boards more than once if you donīt ban them. Neal could manually verify accounts before they get activated, but that is too much work and would only help to prevent some attacks.

Yeah, it's a nusiance but as long as Gizz keeps PMing me with the username, I can clean it up. I am finding the bots use real words like "porn" or "trading" in their e-mails, so I set the ban for those words. Otherwise we would see a whole lot more. After the end of the year I'll check vB for updates and see if they have a new version that cuts down on spambots.

Understood. I can now see that there are no easy solutions short of us all going off-line. ;) Thanks.

I know these are kind of annoying, but could those things that show you a picture of a code and you have to type it in be implemented into the registration process? Rapdishare uses it before you can download. That is the best example I can think of right now. I have run into them during the registration process at other sites.

This forum does emply visual CAPTCHA to register. There are actually people who manually register with forums to post spam, as well as some sophisticated spambots that can successfully interpret the CAPTCHA and register.

I must admit not one Russian woman has sent me a PM here on Subsims unlike another forum I'm on.
