If the choice is between Giuliani and McCain I'd prefer the latter. But you can bet your money the next President will be a centrist.

That choice will be worked out in the primaries and you can bet the Democrats will be voting for the weaker candidate.

Mine, too. Still not too late to add a poll. :hmm:

Is there anyone who can give a an outline of how well he ran New York and what his chances are of running?? I know how well he responed to September 11th (I can't call it 9/11 as it goes against the principles of date in Australia, day before month), but did he do a good job before he left office??

Other than some marital infidelity he did a good job.

Pro abortion, pro gay marriage, anti gun.
Worked in NYC, remember Hilary Clinton is a Senator from NY.
Politically I don't think he could be called moderate/centrist. He's a lefty no doubt about it.
I wouldn't vote for him based on one of the issues, much less three.
Other than some marital infidelity he did a good job. Did that stop him doing his job?

Guess it depends on how you define it. The fallout did, along with the Farmersville Garbage Scandal, cost him the Senate seat he was running for.

I had an opportunity to meet Rudi post 9/11 at New Years Eve celebration in Times Square. It was his last day in office before incoming mayor Michael (can't remember his last name) As an Australian in town we spoke one-on-one for about 45 minutes in the early part of the evening, and he presented as knowledgeable man.
About 10 minutes after I finished talking to him I spoke to Michael (insert the surname again) about Rudi and asked the question - is he someone you admire.
He spoke so highly of Rudi that he thought he could go to the Whitehouse.
I don't think Rudy will survive the primaries, for the simple reason that the Republican base will reject him. If you have no idea what party he belongs to and look at his stance on the issues, you'd swear he was a Democrat. It is very, very difficult to win primaries as a centrist, just ask John McCain. I think the Republicans will nominate someone much more conservative. For president in 2008? I'll put my cash on Barack Obama:up: He'll get into the White House the same way JFK did, young optimistic and a senator with little baggage... that is unless Hillary figures out some way to pull the rug out from under him:roll:

If I were a betting man then I would say the same. :yep:
In my opinion the only thing that could possibly stand in his way is his own Republican party during the candidate nomination stages.

I am not using those issues as a basis for President. None of those issues will make or break the country, and abortion rights and gun rights will not change regardless of who is President. I think the fuss over gay marriage is stupid. Who cares if two homosexuals want to say they are married, we can get a big laugh when they learn with marriage often comes divorce :D
Immigration control, govt spending, lower taxes, defense, terrorism, and law enforcement are the issues that concern me. I don't know Rudy inside and out but I approve of how he brought NYC back into the real world, even though minority groups opposed him. He got the job done.

I think he did a good job, but that needs to be taken into context. Economically, the times were good - with a booming stock market contributing to extremely high tax returns as well as sweetening the deal to maintain legitimate careers. A lot of that money went into law enforcement, with the NYPD morphing from a local heavy-duty department into one using sophisticated data-coordination. Not to say that inept governments can't squander economic opportunities, but Giuliani was very much a creation of his time rather than the other way around.
By the end of his administration, the good times were coming to an end - the price of gas was suddenly starting to climb, raises started to diminish, the dot-com bubble was beginning to collapse. 9/11 gave the guy a great opportunity to go out on a high-note and even pave the way for his successor, but I think even he's been blinded by the post 9/11 glow. His Chief of Police, Bernie Kerik was blinded as well - so much so that when he was offered a job at Homeland Security, he jumped at it, forgetting or just not caring that the appointment required Senate confirmation hearings that guarantee all dirt will be found, and that no skeleton in the closet will be left behind. Giuliani will be shooting for a higher prize, and having come from a higher position is all but guaranteed to face even more ominous ghosts - Amadou Diallo, Abhoulima, Operation Condor, his wife, his appropriation of the "Broken Windows" theory (roundly derided by its founder) and the fact that he sounds like a conservative but doesn;t act like one - critical to culture warriors for whom those terms have real meaning.

Whoever runs for president, and whoever wins, I hope that they will be good for your country and be able work with everyone else in the globe.
May the best man, or woman, win.

I prepared this great long screed as how the US should "work with everyone else in the globe". But then I thought.
How about every one else get along with the US.

Neither of which are possible. Every country has it's enemies and the bigger and more powerful it is the more enemies it has. Nothing we could do, or not do, would please everyone.

Say what you want about Rudy, but his performance in office post-911 was exemplary. He reminded me of another beloved Mayor of New York, Fiorello LaGuardia. His leadership went a long way to helping mobilize the city and begin to heal the wounds of 9/11. He would be a smart choice for the Republicans, a centerist, pro-choice candidate who was called "America's Mayor". A man who acted, decisively and effectively in one of the greatest emergencies the nation has faced in these times. That, IMHO, elevates him above every other candidate out there.

Now there is a name from the past. He seems to have completely disappeared from the political landscape in America. What happened to the guy?

And of course he has all my support.

Rudy has made some good calls, which I have read about directly or indirectly. I need to take a closer look at his record to see whether he offers anything worthwhile.
Mccain is definately out of the running, as far as I'm concerned. I'd put Nancy Pelosi in there before Mccain or Hillary.
