View Full Version : How do you aim at parts of the ships
Hi i have a question i normally aim at part of the ship and lock the scope on the ship which goes dead centre then i just launch my torps and wait to see where they hit. However i have read about where to aim to cause massive damage, HOW DO YOU DO THIS THEN when you have locked the target, please help ??

Well, from my experience, if you aim dead centre, it usually doesn't hit the centre, and normally hits the stern (rear) of the ship, close to the propellor. My suggestion, remove the lock on the target, and aim slightly front of the intended location, that way, you'll make up for the targeting error caused by a rough sea...etc.
The critical area as you asked is the engine room, and that is below and slightly behind of the ship's smoke stack (or watever u call it :P ). Aim for the smoke stack anyway (er..i mean below the smoke stack, would be spectacular to have a flying torpedo wouldn't it? :hmm: ).
If ur using automatic targeting and u score a hit here, the ship splits into 2 nice pieces :arrgh!: . For manual targeting, it takes a little bit of luck, sure the ship may not explode outright all the time, but it goes down after flooding for a few minutes , if it doesn't then shoot another torpedo :stare: . Try a large cargo for example, this vessel will take all day to sink.
I'm using the GreyWolves mod btw, and my experience is based on it. Not sure about stock SH3.

Hello
you 'unlock' the periscope sights. I think it's the 'L' key. Then you can move the scope around, aim and fire whenever you like.
I play with automatic lock-on turned off, so I need to have my Weapons Officer plot a solution everytime.
but its still simple, aim at the compartment you like (under the Exhaust normally is the engine room, which in most cases stops a ship or even blow it up if hit), tell your officer to plot solution and fire away.
Only one warning: line up your boat to closest as possible to 90 Degrees to the target when attacking a moving ship like that. You can of course fire at ships in the whole angle 270 - 90 because all torpedoes can do an initial turn.
But when aiming at other places than the center of the ship I've had several misses when the torpedo needed to turn too long.

And don't forget to open the torpedo tubes doors before firing!

By hitting the 'Q' button on your keyboard.
By doing this, you will eliminate the pause you get when you hit the fire button and the torp will fire immediately.

If you really want to blow the sucker sky high, set your torpedoes to Magnetic mode, and then set the depth equal to the ship's submerged keel depth. This will really give him a bad day. Worked for me, took down a large cargo with this technique.
Of course, if u have enabled dud torpedoes (like i did), expect a low success rate, this is historically accurate :P

Run a Search and Check out Wazzos or Danteocs targeting tutorial
then go practice in the shIII tutorial, sink all 5 fives on the hoof
then you will be able to pinpoint spots on targets with out the target lock the weapon guy or the note pad...
takes a bit of time but well worth it...
