Even though this happened last month, Chinese sub shadowing our carriers isn't anything new. They've had quite a few run-ins with the Japanese Navy on doing ops around Okinawa also.

This news item even made it onto Michelle Malkin's blog (http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006353.htm), with some submariner assessment comments as well.

Like the submariner said, I'm sure we were on and tracking the diesel long before he appeared. The US does not send out BILLIONS of dollars of military hardware without protection below and above. You can bet you next paycheck on that!!

The diesel boats are quiet on batteries, but they've got to recharge sometime. And when they recharge, they're hella louder than a nuke on quiet cruise. The problem is the cost, same as it was with the Tiger tanks.
Zerg rushes still work in the modern military domain. How do you fight a zerg-rush of diesel boats?

By flooding the bottom of the ocean with Lurkers, of course.

That's why the Navy developed better sonar...e.xcept it happens to kill all living sea creatures withing about 5 Km...

There are sacrifices in all aspects of defense.

This just reinforces my belief that the USN should have a dedicated ASW warship then i would say the USN has the best fighting navy in the world.
The USN is good but there are still some flaws that could be closed, also i would be very worried if the trailing submarine was a han seeing as they are incredibly loud so my question would be were they holding fire drills and no one was at the sonar station? thats realy the only way your not going to find a han is if some one isnt there or asleep.
supposedly it was a Song, a diesel electric sub.
Well, it has happened in the past that a diesel elctric sub got inside a carrier battle group.
This story seems to be too much hi-toned...

Well, that is an acceptable outcome if the result of it is killing all living enemies within 5 Km too!

The truth according to the Navy is that they didn't detect it beforehand. At least one Senator is outraged by it too.

im not outraged although i can see why this senator is there is a misconception that the US forces to have a sub near it it must have been detected this is a diesel subamrine and capable of being very quiet clearly this senator needs to have a few lessons on the reality of submarine warfare and the capabilities of other nations

That would be interesting.........seeing a VIIC/42 duke it out with a modern DD in a wargame.

This misconception is entirely brought about by the usual USN stance on such matters, which is exemplified by those submariners in Michelle Malkin's blog (see up) and leaked into such popular media as Tom Clancies. Now it is a little too late for them to reverse their stance and expect not to be yelled at.
