Hi guys,

Just thought I would tell you about an encounter I had with SH3 and GW1.1a, SH3Gen and SH3 Commander 2.6 - with waves set at 'seasonal'.

I had started a new career from Sept 1939 based in Wilhelmshaven. Having left dock I headed through to the open sea and set a course for AN16 - my patrol square - covering Scapa Flow. I set time compression and remained surfaced as it was calm. Every now and then the alert sounded for a ship, but they were German. After a little while I hit a VERY heavy storm in the North Sea - at approx 1am. Pitch black, pouring rain, howling winds and foggy too - visibility was down to around 3-400 metres.

Having submerged to take cover and save fuel my Sonarman announced a contact 70 degrees to starboard. I made several sound checks myself and plotted them roughly on the map as an indication of direction. I then lay in an intercept course. The ship wasn't moving in a straight line though so had to keep changing direction and re-plotting etc. I was hoping the storm would subside by the time I got close.

It didn't. I kept surfacing for brief periods to see if my watch crew could locate her. This game of cat and mouse went on for almost an hour. I would locate her by sonar then lose her in no time. Eventually I surface and at flank speed headed in her direction. I knew I was close due to sonaor volume, so set torps to run fast at 2.5 metres at 500 metres distance. Standing on the bridge in the driving rain as the sub was pitching and rolling was very atmospheric!!

Suddenly through the mist I spotted something, the bow of the ship was heading across my sub from right to left, pitching and rolling violently in the storm!

Knowing I only had seconds to react I quickly opened the torp tube and fired at the bow, I knew this was my only chance of getting her in this storm. After a very short time the torp impacted just aft of her bow - the merchant ship then exploded and rolled heavily on her port side. Amidst the cheering of the crew and sound of this ship breaking up very close by I set course hard to port to avoid the wreck and went to periscope depth to watch the show. Rolling in the sea she sank within 5 minutes.

After the time taken it was a very satisfying event I can tell you!

That's what I like about this sim, it can take ages to finally track a ship, plot an intercept and then sink her. But, the feeling of satisfaction makes it worthwhile!

Now a slight problem. After that event I set course for calmer seas, sent my report and saved the game on exit.

I returned a little while later, loaded up SH3Gen and put the savegame in. Loaded SH3 Commander and selected to continue the patrol and clicked Launch SH3.

When in the game I went through to the Captains career, but all the saved games were gone - the list was blank!

I couldn't continue it - SH3Gen saw it, but SH3 itself was saying there were no saved games.

Any suggestions....?

Thanks
