Get the first type IX or save for the better ones?

I'm planning on getting a type IX since my first career I carried a type VIIC, eventually pimped out but felt really hampered by the limited torpedo load, especially if I was on my way back from patrol and encountered a convoy while I only had 1-2 fish:nope:

The thing I'm wondering about- is it worth it to hold off and get the upgraded versions of the IX? the manual says they have even more torpedo stowage, and I know that when you get a new sub you lose all your previous upgrades, which is why I'm even holding off upgrading the VIIB(to save as much renown as possible).

I started in 1939, and so far even with my little VIIB it has been a killfest since I've been considerably better at playing this game since my first career. So I'm hoping to have the 9000 renown required for the type IX soon enough.

Personally, I always start with the IX Boats but if your saving up for one I would suggest waiting for the IXC.

The IXC has better range/upgrades and becomes available shortly after the IXB.

Be prepared to totally change the way you hunt, these IX boats aren't everyone's cup of tea but if you find the correct way to use them then they are very rewarding.

I don't know if it's modelled in SH3, but as they are bigger boats, they are a larger sonar target and as such you will have SO much fun trying to evade escorts than you would in a VII.

IxB or IXC are fine but then there's the upgrades I think the only upgrades will be the conning tower,engine and batteries then the Flack gunsdon't think sonar comes into the equation yet. but at the end of the day it is worth it especially when you get the IXD-2 go whereever you want 27000+km range and some decent firepower to boot, it worth considering but it depends what you want to do patrol mid atlantic or join operation Drumbeat?

I get approx 48000 km out of my IXD2:smug: but it does take a while getting anywhere at 8-10 knts. I do love that boat though.

Usually I start with a VIIB and once I have enough renown I upgrade to a IXC.

Off the top of my head, the primary difference between a 9b and 9c is the 9c has more fuel and 1 extra torpedo.

The 9b has one thing going for it. You can acutally mount heavy flak on it with the IX/1 tower and have it work. The diving time is *supposed* to be fast by 1 or 2 seconds but unless you mod that i dont think its represented.

The main reason i typicaly don't use an IXB is because of the fuel. An IXB should have a diesal range of 12,000 KM @ 10kts. The IXC of 13,350 @ 10 kts. My personal favorite is acutally the IXC/40, (top speed of 19 kts vs the IXC's 18.3, and 13,850 KM at 10 kts range vs 13,350 km at 10 kts. ) , but again unless you mod this, its not represented.

I more or less maxed out U-123 in my game, it's a IXa out of Lorient. Oktober 1943.

Wondering what to do next with about 8000 renown in the bank, but more or less the same dilemma here where there's versions concerned.

Big plus on the VII(C) is the diving and turning speed. It's a fine boat, especially in the Med, but upgrade to a IX, much more eels :up:

It's sluggish at first, different, but you'll start to love a IX once you've been hunting tankers around the Antilles... But mount a Flak20Vierling or Flak37 too LOL
