Just saw that the 5 hr. version of Das Boot is playing on my cable company (Cox) on channel 308 (EATV - Encore Action) from 0430-0930 (Pacific) on Thursday 11/9/06. Made room on my DVR for it
I've only seen the standard running film...

Cox? What a name for a TV station. You'd guess there would be other movies shown than 'Das BooT'...

Why don't you buy the uncut version, 2 dvds.
I got it, and one dvd contains the making of Das Boot and interviews with the actors incl the kaleun, very interesting.
This version, the longest, contains more non action scenes supposed to show life on a german uboat. Can get boring, but this is the way it was meant to be shown said director Wolfgang Petersen.

Many extended scenes; Herr Kaleun and his friend Thomsen discussing dud torpedoes, a couple of scenes involving Ulmann and his French girlfriend, several more air attacks and crash dives (and a possible 'false alarm'), a whole lot of other good stuff, but best of all the whole thing is narrated by 'Werner'.
It's far, far better than either of the earlier versions.
What a shame that in Poland the 5h version is not in sale :/

Spoiler Alert
The "new" (ie. not in the un-cut version) scene that touched me the most was when they started to realize that Thomsen's u-boat had most likely been sunk. You don't see him killed, it's just the realization that he's not reporting in when he should, and the comment that "you'll soon be reporting another missing boat".
