K-317 Panther submarine suffered from big fire when being rebuilt at the federal-run Severnoe Enterprise, Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region of Russia. The incident happened through negligence of welders November 2.
K-317 lied up in the dock of Severnoe Enterprise, where it was being rebuilt. Through negligence of welders, first the rags in the third compartment and then the wooden flooring broke into flames. The welders tried to put out the fire, but to no avail. It reached the cable routing inside the submarine.
Decision of professional firemen, who arrived on call, was to flood the compartment by water and foam, but spokesmen of the enterprise were of different opinion. They suggested battening down the compartment, as the fire would go out itself on the lack of air.
In a couple of hours, the temperature in the battened compartment started going down. At 50°C, the compartment was aired by powerful vents and seven firemen stepped down.
But they didn’t go far. Very soon, two firemen were heavily poisoned by combustion products and nearly died because of it. They were evacuated and delivered to hospital at the last moment.
K-317 (displacement of 10,500 tons; maximum dip of 600 meters; OK-9VM nuclear reactor) was set afloat in May 1990. In January 1999, its captain, Sergey Spravtsev, was crowned the Hero of Russia for courage and heroism. According to media, K-317 followed a strategic missile carrying submarine of the United States for 150 hours in a row.
