I've been wondering this since I first got into my command room. It that vertical pole he hangs onto when the boats rocking. It has some kind of universal joint near the top.

What does this turn? Its some kind of driveshaft

I guess it is there for stability. Or safety that you don't break your back. The Kaleun had to had an overview of the situation and the chief gave the orders to the plane mans. So they had to stand up, making that poll during a depth-charging very much usefull!

He uses this to dance late at night. Often the crew will give him a dollar bill for his talents :yep:

I believe that is the drive shaft that raises and lowers the Loop Antenna.

Good Hunting,

All kidding aside, there is a universal joint on the pole. Perhaps it is for the radar but then again, the early boats have this pole but radar was not used at the time.

I think the pole is for the Fireman to slide down when the alarm is raised.

I would guess that the "joint" is there to prevent or lessent the transfer of the shock from the depth charges that are causing him to be holding it in the first place.

It probably is the rotator for one of the aerials (radio or radar). In fact if you watch Das Boot the observation periscope is right there and the LI spends most of his time hanging on to one of its support wires. Many things in SHIII are misplaced. Right behind the ladder there should be a large cylindrical housing for the attack 'scope, and there should be a guy sitting at a steering wheel at the very front of the control room. I think the pole should be further aft and more toward the port side, but I'm not sure.

How many do you think have been looking at that for 5 hours and still feels like an idiot?...hehe ..btw I'm not among them ;)

But back to that famous pole, I can't find it in my VII. The chief engineer got nothing to hold on to, he's just standing there looking like he doesn't know what to do

Hi all,

this thing you talk about is for the "Funkpeiler" (donīt know the english technical term, but must be something like "radio-traffic-receiver" or "detection device")

Cheers, AS
