Nope...strictly "topside" here mate! Served in the British Merchant Navy for 5 years in the 70s. Luckily, I never had to face meeting up with a Uboat with tube doors open!!;)
Total respect for any guy who does his sailing with water above him, rather than under!!!

I got an engineering internship with the US Navy working on subs. I'm still in college, but I can see it becoming my chosen job.

Not personally/directly, but my dad did command a YP (Yard Patrol) craft for the USN for a bit during World War II, patrolling for subs off the US coast, before heading for Okinawa in '45. If I see any patrol craft off the coast during my drumbeat patrols I always turn tail and slink away, just in case (wouldn't want to inadvertently mess up the timeline :D )

Does a tour thru SSN USS Nautilus in Groton, CT count? ;) At least the tours gives a real sense of how cramped it was. My ex son-in-law was stationed there for just over 2 years.

I was a sonar tech on the USS Grayling SSN 646, from 1989 through 1995. Made several deployments including a Med run, a couple of North Atlantic runs, and an Artic Run.

Personally no, but I do come from a naval family. My father was a commander in the navy. His specialty was WEO (Weapons Engineering Officer) when aboard ship, however, later in his career he was in charge of all refits conducted at Devonport dockyards in Plymouth.

As an added bonus I was always allowed to 'tour' the ships when they were in dock. Because I was a 'regular' his senior staff and I got very friendly and I recall them and I skateboarding along the flight deck of HMS Invincible. Of course my father wasn't onboard at the time.

This was about 15 years ago. Doesn't time fly.

Im a submariner in the Royal Navy, been in for 15 years now, serving on Trafalgar Class SSN submarines.

Id rather be at home though on my rusty old U-Boat than away on patrol on a Nuclear Boat anyday, reasons stated below:-

1.My wife brings me a cup of tea when im on the helm of my u-boat.
2.I can leave the command room and go for a bath in the evening.
3.I get a better choice of food on U-48 (My SH3 Boat).
4.I dont need to fill in security forms to show my mates around U-48.
5.I can increase the time compression on U48 to make the patrol go quicker.
6.Dont have to que up for a shower on my U-Boat.
7.The German sailors have better quality of music, no rapping crap.
8.No frisky wives on nuclear submarines.
9.I can use as much fresh and hot water as i want on my U Boat.
10.I dont get up to go on watch and put someone else's socks and shoes on.

Believe me shipmates when I say life on a Nuclear Submarine is ARSE, in comparrison to being at home and actually enjoying your life. :up:

SH3 got little to do with todays subs, but of course there are many diesel/electric subs still in service. The technology however is a little better from the german WW2 boats ;)

I didn't like any of the nuclear subsims released. Besides I didn't enjoy firing nuclear missiles, it has never happened in wartimes, and I sure hope it never will happen.

I went on Invincible once, got lost.

But then I sometimes got lost on frigates & I worked on them quite often.

I'm a military brat, never served, but my dad was on a sub for a few brief times for recon transfers (maybe SS-166 or 168?). He was a US Marine Raider in WWII (1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment), part of the island hopping campaign in the Pacific. He didn't like the claustrophobic environment of a sub. He said he didn't mind people shooting at him as long as he had somewhere to go, but said he felt trapped in a submarine. :D

He retired after serving in WWII, Korea and one tour of Vietnam. Very lucky guy, he beat the law of averages with the exception of a few wounds and a case of malaria from the jungles during the last year of WWII.

He never talked about war... It's been my experience, the ones that talk about it the least, probably saw the worst of war. I know he did... I never knew anything about his combat background until I recently came upon some newspaper clippings about his WWII experiences.

I'll stick with virtual war where only my ego gets hurt and no one else gets hurt either... but, I have a deep respect for anyone that serves their country, in any capacity.

I have been on the U-505 tour though, along with being / living on military bases growing up and seeing some neat stuff.
