yeh I just noticed this. I think its the correct decision and we cannot be swayed by promises of retribution. I can't understand why we won't go in and fetch Mugabe.

Really, we can come up with a much longer list of names and I don't think Mugabe would be at the top.

thats true! but Mugabe is someone that I particularly hate because he is still invited to state events etc...

Would you say the same had some country done the same to Hilter before he invaded Poland? How about Stalin (your pal?), before he slaughtered some 20 to 30 million people under the Soviet boot?
What would you feel if i would invade and kill bush?

listen, this man killed millions of his own people. if i had my way he would die a very slow death at the hands of some of the families of the kurdish dead

My oh my, no need for the nasty comments.
@AL, so he's 14? He has every right to an opnion and I know a lot of kids who are pretty sharp.
@ N00b, look I also was against the Iraq war and don't like the way Saddam is going to look like a martyr. We can't however excuse massacres and genocides just because it was done "inside the country." Didn't that Spanish judge try to get Pinochet arrested? Was that interference or not?

I did not say i want to do that. I'm not that stupid, dude. It was a "what would you feel IF" question. I'm way to Cowardly to do things like that.
I already regret that comment. I should have formulated it better, but the point has been made clear. No offence or threats against anyone.

That article is confusing and long-winded. It's Sunday and I'm tired of reading all these newspapers full of these kind of articles from journalists who believe their article is more important than the facts being reported themselves.
Straight to the point without bells and whistles:
Saddam Hussein - sentenced to death by hanging.
Barzan Ibrahim - former intelligence officer, sentenced to death by hanging.
Awad Hamed al-Bandar - former head of some government-party branch, sentenced to death by hanging.
Taha Yassin Ramadan - former vice-president of Iraq, life sentence.
Abdullah Kazim Ruwayyid - Baath party cave man, 15 years.
Mizhar Abdullah Ruwayyid - Baath party cave man #2, 15 years.
Ali Dayih Ali - Baath party monkey-man, 15 years.
Mohammed Azawi Ali - Baath party "tell me who you walk with" man, not-guilty.
I'm against the death penalty by principle, though I can accept exceptions (not including the automatic cases of self-defense and war). In this case I find Saddam to have earned the easy way out ticket. 15 years of torture at least before the final hanging, only to be applied after Saddam develops immunity to pain. And of course, there is the whole martyr thing. The Iraqi "insurgents" are being depleted and more Iranians have to cross the border to take their job every day. Iranians won't cry for Saddam but his killing could give one last breath to the Iraqi insurgency. Another argument to keep him locked for a little longer, just untill his death is sure to inspire nobody. He does not deserve a heroic ending to their understanding but to go down in shame and despise by the future generations.
Can anyone explain to me what good killing him will do? I understand it will save the cost of incarcerating him, but little other than that.
This isn't a flamer post, I'm genuinley interested.
(An answer in plain language would be cool, rather than links to other stories/news articles - I never seem to have time to read those).
Cheers.

Bravo! I work with a guy, who was with unit that captured him. That was his conclusion too. Oh well,:damn: . They should take him to where the Kurds live, put him in a pink jump-suit that says "I'm back", then kick him out in the middle of town. I think the Kurds will do a good job of taking care of the problem.:dead:

Because letting him live would give incentive for others to continue fighting once they're let out of prison. It's the whole "They didn't kill Saddam, so they're not going to touch me once I get out" mentality. Not only that, but it would be perceived as a show of weakness by the Iraqi gov't (not the United States), and invite more warfare and bloodshed.

I think they wanted to hang him, as he request that if he was sentanced to death, he wanted to be shot.
Maybe they should have handed him over to Kuwait. I sure they would love to have a chance to pass some judgement on him!! Maybe Iran would give up there Nuclear program for him as well. They would love to show what the quaran says about what he did to the country.

We invaded their country and brought about a change in leadership. Whether that was right or wrong is a good topic for argument. We are not killing him; his own countrymen tried him, found him guilty and sentenced him.
As for the mode of execution, that was also their choice. Why do want his head blown off?

Good riddance to bad blood, it's a pity they didn't allow some of his subjected citizens to have a go at him :dead:
In the hope of fostering peace, having his sentence commuted to life in prison with no parole is far worse punishment you know as I do...and would give no fuel to the martyr fire....Honestly I look to see this happen.I think the lack of limelight would drive him insane probably.

Sorry Iceman but I don't see that he has enough supporters among the populace to be a credible martyr.
And from the iraqi point of view having Saddam in prisons with the posibility of breakout during a civil war situation is much worse than killing him off quick (after due vudicial process or coarse ;) ). If he got back into any type of power there would be hell to pay for ordinary iraqi's.
And being killed like a common criminal is humiliating enough for Saddam.

What i would of done is sentence him to the kurds as a slave for the rest of his life.
So Saddam murdered heaps of ppl?, And like the good ppl we are we must defend the downtrodden huh?
Well when the Serb leader of Yugoslavia started his private war in the early 90's who went to this countries aid? Who helped the Croatians, Muslims, be murdered by the Serbs? Never saw USA running to help or the Poms nor any other country including ours, alot sent peace keepers while they stood by and watch serbs take out their ethnic cleanseing. Was it because there wasn't a drop of oil to be found in this land? :hmm:

If this was a war for oil, the US must have plain forgotten to seize it. The Iraqis own and control their oil wells.
I say an eye for an eye... hang him high, but let the Kurds pull the lever. Or stone his sorry a** in publick.
Know this tho. Saddam will be a martyr to those in Tikrit and the terrorists, and his death will fuel even more terrorism.
