Great patrol but low renown?

Running Vanilla w/ patch..

Finally upgraded from a IIA to a VIIB after my last patrol. I was only averaging 2 or 3 small ships with the IIA. Left some damaged since I didn't have the eels or deck gun to finish them off.. But finally had enough for a bigger boat.

Completed my first patrol in the VIIB. Sank around 15 ships (Mostly small & coastal merchants) and had over 32K tons almost inclusively in AN73. I had medals, promotions and quals to hand out. Received my IC 1st. class.. Went to upgrade my sub and didn't have enough renown to upgrade anything.. I think I had about 2,000 renown and that's it.. I completed both objectives, docked back in port and had 98% hull integrity... I looked at the renown list & most of my ships were 60 or 70 apiece except for the C2's I sank..

Started another patrol & looking for the bigger ships.. This patrol is taking me past scarpa flow so maybe I'll find more ships there..

What do you think my next upgrade should be??

I tend to let the Tramp Steamers/Coastal Merchants go by. Those things can take a beating (usually at least 2 torpedos, if you're lucky) and they give jack squat for renown.

Go for hydrophone and battery upgrades. Skip the superchargers since they're unbalanced and unrealistic. Then go for anti sonar coating, and radar and radar detection devices. I tend to skip the conning tower and flak upgrades, as I don't shoot it out with planes.

Thanks for the info... All but the C2's usually go down with one fish.. I like sneaking up on the small ones and blasting them with the deck gun :arrgh!: I know that sooner or later they'll be firing back...

The only targets I pass up regularly are warships and armed trawlers..

I just finished patrol #32 and met up with a convoy of unarmed Merchants. Only 3 escorts too, of which I sank 2. The 3rd ran off faster than superman. LOL So... I nailed 13 merchants of which the C3 took 4 torps to sink. The rest only one if it was a broadside shot. A T2 took 3 under the keel. Best thing was none were armed. Date... Aug 21,'43 in Grid DT68. Never made it to my patrol grid ET11. Ordered to RTB at Lorient by BDU. :arrgh!: arrrgh

This is with a heavily modded vanilla SHIII. :D

Best patrol i did was in the Type IIA U-6 i love that boat i managed to sink the HMS Renown with one torp in scapa flow, but my best patrol was with a type VIIB sank two C2's and costal hey its early 1940 :D
