Hi fellow Kaleuns,
I've got a question. Before I started my first career, I made the standard training missions and was entitled Leutnant zur See. I startet the career with the same rank. Now, after 5 patrols and 180.000 tons on the ground of the see, I've received several medals but no promotion. Do you get promoted during careers? Or do I have to accomplish the training missions all with excellent to be entitled Oberleutnant zur See or even Kapitänleutnant zur See?
It can't be that my officers on board have the same rank than me!!!! :damn:

Promotion is linked to renown but I don't have the exact numbers ready when you get promoted, they are somewhere in the basic.cfg.
This system is another thing that bothers me. I just finished a career spanning from mid '41 to 10/44 sinking over 400 000 tons, playing at 94% and still was only Kaleun with close to 30 000 renown...:hmm:

I've ran a 1 day mission where I just loaded into the world at port and then exited after taking a few dozen screens at the landscape and was promoted to Oblt z. See, so try that.
And I've also noticed that on missions where I rather 'underpreformed', or recieved a below average tonange, that I am more likley to be promoted.
Answered my own former question, new question is: Sh3 dosen' go past KpLt right?

This is from the basic.cfg and IMO rank0 is Leutnant z.S., 1 is Oberleutnant z.S. (normally you get it with the 1000 from the academy plus the starting 500), 2 is Kaleu and 3 should be Korvettenkapitän which I never got although I had way more renown than needed.

So I only need 1500 points for Oberleutnant? After mission 2, I had 3000 points and bought a VIIb, why wasn't I promoted? Damn! :stare:

IIRC you will get 'penalized' for spending renown. 3000 - 2000 for your VIIB = 1000 renown.
This is one really annoying part of the renown system.

Ah, thank you. I thought you'd be promoted when ENTERING port with more than 1500 points "in the bank", not at next time's entry.
When I'm back home from my sixth patrol I will get promoted or I will place my butt behind a desk again! I need to speak to Dönitz about this. What's his number again? Bernard, put me through to the Admiral please. No, not Niemitz! :damn:

What mods are you using? I know a couple of them made it easier to get promoted, especially the first one. I think SH3 Commander makes you an Oberleutnant zur See after the first patrol no matter what, but I may be thinking of RUB.:88)

Started with 1500 too but I got the rank Leutnant jr. I now got over 4000 renown and still no promotion. Some of my officers got a higher rank than me :damn:

Hmmm, I got promoted to Oberleutnant z.S. as soon as I got 5000 of renown. And somebody told me that you need 15000 of renown for the promotion Kaleun.:hmm:
Edit: BTW I don't spend renown for upgrades, so I can't be penalized for spending my renown.

I play SHIII vanilla as well, and I have recently been promoted to Kpt.lt. (as you can see in my sig). I got this after I got to 15000 renown. I got the first one at 5000, and from the community manual, the final one would be 25000. Here is the link if you want to check it out for yourself:

Well, yesterday was my finest hour. 65,000 tons of steel on the ocean floor. Destroyed several freighters, single-handed took out a whole convoi (consisting of a C2 and two fishing boats :rotfl:) with the deck guns, and went into Aberdeen Naval Yard. I found two sleeping ships, a T3 and a Titanic-look-alike. After reading other topics about sinking giant ships in harbors I checked the depth which was 77m so I pumped two torpedoes on each side of the Titanic and 2 into the tanker, and they both bottomed to the floor. Yippie, 30,000 tons within 1 hour! No destroyers were there to interfer. And I attacked in the evening, while it was still alight. I also managed to sink a destroyer, who came to search for the reason of an sos of a freighter I torpedoed and deck-gunned. I was already wondering, why the freighter is shooting light signals into the air... :hmm: Anyway, the destroyer didn't see me, I was in direct line for a shoot, off she went to search for the sunk freighter a few meters below me :D
I came home and was honored the Ritterkreuz mit Schwerter and Eichenlaub, got 3 promotions and 12 medals for the crew members - but no new rank. I now have 3975 renown. According to one of the above posts, 1500 points is enough for Oberleutnant. I'm still Leutnant. I guess my fellow officers will be promoted before me... Then they'll take over command...
BTW, do officers leave your boat themselves to command a sub of their own, or does this not happen in SH3? Do you get requests for transfers from crew members? Do you get points renown if you drop off crew members?

I've never seen anything bigger than a destroyer to be honest in 7 patrols (counting warships). Not bad! Did you pump in all your torpedoes?
I am now in April 40, and have to patrol the south of Bergen. The Germans will attack pretty soon, so I hope for some nice fleeing English merchants and warships. Come, little Britains... :arrgh!:

Almost. I wasted a couple earlier on a tramp steamer. Poor choice I know, but I was getting desperate. Suddenly, a task force appears before me on a collision course. 1 carrier, 2 cruisers and a few DD's.
Had just enough torps to sink the carrier, but could only damage 1 cruiser.
This little piggy went "wee wee wee" all the way home.:rotfl:

*If you use GW/NYGM/RUb you can expect promotion after your first patrol, assuming you haven't spent all of your renown in the meantime (refer RankLevel1 value). Unlike most other corrections for historical accuracy, this one actually works in the player's favour!
The highest rank awarded by SH3 appears to be KptLt. I have never seen the rank of KK awarded even though there is an associated RankLevel3 setting. And I can guarantee that the game does NOT promote any higher (the next rank is actually FrgKpt, not Kpt as some believe).
Another clarification...
It is quite historically correct for your LI to be a higher rank than you. It did happen. As I have posted elsewhere, the Engineer stream of officer was different than the Line stream. In the event of a dead Kaleun, it was the IWO - ie the next highest Line officer - that took over command, even if he was subordinate to the LI.
Of course, it would not be appropriate for your IWO, IIWO etc to be higher in rank than you.
Note that the SH3Cmdr Realistic Crew option and the default RUb crews mimick this acceptable situation.

So no need to feel sad if your IWO outranks you. It happened...must have been awkward situation tho. " Reports on the Interrogation of Survivors of U-boats" are really interesting stuff to read. Great stories and tons of details.

Well, NOW I'm frustrated.
After 12 very successfull patrols, sinking about 700,000 tons of british steel, I was promoted to Kapitänleutnant. I took the phone and immediately switched to the 2nd Flotille. Got myself a IXb and some upgrades and went out of the port (Lorient is crap, btw) to single-handedly destroy a whole convoi (4 escort DD, 1 T3, 2 C3, 2 C2, 4 SF) plus some single ships and came back to Lorient with 90,000 tons on the bottom of the ocean. I had about 6,500 points renown before leaving port as Kaleun with my IXb, and now I returned with an additional 2,000 points renown, and I was promoted again... to OBERLEUTNANT? WHAT THE HECK??? :damn:
I never had less than 5,000 points, so I can't be promoted to OL, also, it can't be that you loose a rank by buying a sub or upgrading it and getting under the 15,000 points limit of Kaleun. It this a common bug? Historically it was surely not correct to get promoted, receive a new boat, get de-promoted (what's the right word?) for it and start all over again...
Has anybody experienced the same thing?

Well, yesterday was my finest hour. 65,000 tons of steel on the ocean floor.
WOW! My best was 121961 tons Nailed a couple of C2's a DD and 3 BATTLESHIPS!! I sank a Revenge and two Nelsons. Since you have a year to go, take my advice. Patrol Gibralter around April 1st to the 9th. I encounter the task force down near Africa, South West of the entrance of the straits. All this while running stock SG3 plus Commander. Got back to St. Nazarine and Bingo Promotion with over 3000 renoun as my reward. Ended up over 7000 renoun. Since then no promotions. I used a tpye VIIB with that run. Traded my U-51 for a VIIC. Got 10000 renoun and now I am in command of that big IXCD2 what ever the hell number it is. All I now is I plan to spend some warm Christmas in the Caribena thanks to that 23,400 KM range:arrgh!:

I dont really care what rank I am but I do some hiring/firing of crew just to make it intersting.
I use SHIII Commander and GW on my version.
Here is the list of the experience points each crewman are allowed as maximum points. They can get more points by playing them but these are the cutoff numbers before a seaman promotes to a Warrant Officer and such. However this doesnt happen as SHII Commander and SHII doesnt allow you to promote a crew man to another class level.
Officers - 500
Warrant Officers - 300
Regular seaman - 100
So here is what I do before I launch SHIII.
I open up Commander and go to the crew management dialog box under the 'Actions' link. I go through all my crew members and see who needs to be promoted. I use the 'experience' numbers to tell me who to promote. If seaman 'so and so' has 43/20 experience, I promote him one grade. I then crank up SHIII and go straight to the crews listing. I look for any crew memeber who has more points than what is listed above and dismiss him. I then enlist a new crew member with 0 renown. This goes for ALL crew members. This way, I have a rotating crew with differnt experience levels like I believe what would happen in RL.
This is just another way I micromanage my sub using SHIII, GW, and SHIII Commander.

Thanks for the info.
I've always wondered why crew members have sort of 43/20 points, now I know who deserves promotion and who doesn't.
BTW, what does your sig mean? Do you want to say: "we've been sunk by a lorry" or "we have sunk a lorry"?

If you use SHIII Commander, you can promote crew up several grades as long as you stay within the requirements. So a seaman cannot be promote higher than 100 experience points level and the WO cannot go pass the 300 points level. SHIII Commander will give you an error message if you try.
Take the 'seaman' class. The break down for promotions are as follows:
20 points
50 points
100 points
So if we take your crewmen at 43/20 as an example. We promote him one grade and he ends up at 43/50. He is good until he tops over 50 experience points then you promote him once again to X/100. Also when crew members are given medals, that also goes towards experience points.
The sig line is from the movie (I cant remember the name of it off hand) with Cary Grant where he is a captain of a US submarine which ends up being painted pink. He tries to attack a ship but misses and the torpedo ends up on the beach and blows up a truck. Cary Grant is at the periscope and then says "We sunk a truck!".
We had a discussion on this forum about my sig line and what the correct German translation is. I think this was the best we could come up with.
