When installing this game I get "Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data11.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. The could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package."
Abort, Retry, Ignore.
I have searched several places including here, and I can't find a solution that works.
I have tried installing after copying the DVD contents to my hard drive.
I have reinitialized the windows installer.
I have cleaned the DVD, and I also went out and bought a new copy, so I have two to work with.
I just changed my mobo and my GPU, but everything seems to be working ok.
Is there any other solutions out there I have missed?
Please help, I love this game, and upgrades were specifically so I can play it. I'm really hurtin' here.
Thanx.
Try installing to a different directory, not the default one provided by the installer. That worked for me when all else failed. Good luck.

Thanx for the advice, but I've already tried that and it doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?

Are you trying to install by copying the entire contents of the CD to your hard drive, and then installing from the HD? I don't think that will work, because of the copy protection software that is an integral part of SHIII.
Install from the CD drive and see if that helps.

I have tried from the DVD-ROM drive and tried copying the contents to the HD then installing. Other people have said that worked.
I do have a CD-ROM that I haven't tried yet. I will try that tonight.
Thanx for the help, keep them coming.

Have you tried runningone of those CD / DVD Drive cleaning disks? It COULD just be that the read "eye" in your drive is starting to fail, hopefully only because it may be a little dirty!;)
Just an idea that might work!

I have a "cd cleaning disk," the kind that has the very small brushes on it. Tried that, already, but it didn't work either.
Keep em' coming!!!
Anti-Virus program running? Hwg, just an idea ...
Have you tried to 'right-click' the file and select open to check contents?
Just to see if you can read it/check integrity ...
Do you have enough memory/disk space to uncompress the file
(it's huge, 1.2 GB).
Is your Windows 'patched' up? Latest bugfixes etc?

IF THE ERROR CODE IS 1335.
Then you have a Windows Installer error that can occur for different cabinet file names located on the installation media (usually a CD/DVD). This issue can be caused by a dirty CD-ROM disk or CD-ROM read issues. This issue can also occur if the installation files are corrupt.
If the suggestions here do not resolve the error, the files may have been corrupted. If this is the case, your software vendor should be contacted to get a new or updated copy of the installation files.
Fix
One or more of the following suggestions might help with this issue:
Reboot the machine and try the installation again.
Clean the CD-ROM. Use a soft cloth to gently clean the disc.
Run the install locally by copying the installation files to your local hard drive.
Using Windows Explorer browse to the location of the installation files. For example, if the installation is on a CD, browse to the CD-ROM drive: http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q110742/Q110742(1).bmp
Copy all the contents of the installation location.
Temporarily paste them to a location on your local hard drive. For example, the Desktop.
Run the install file, for example, setup.exe or install.exe.
That is it...........If all else fails put the CD/DVD IN fridge for an hour on bottom shelf then try it. I know it sounds odd but it seems to work some times.

Yes....that always sounds a strange suggestion, but it can work. Similarly, the same methos can be used to get a bit more "life" from a dying Hard Drive! An hour or so in a cold fridge can sometimes allow the drive to run for long enough to get your valuable data off!!;)

@Floyd
Tried installation with anti-virus software/firewall disabled. That didn't work.
@Narcosis
Tried all that you have suggested. See first post. I will try your freezer trick though, when I get home tonight.
The new copy that I purchased installed on to my laptop. I didn't run it as the laptop wouldn't be able to, but the patch installed successfully. Previously, when I got a successful installation on my main computer, running the patch would result in some sort of error, so I am thinking that this is a sign that the new disk is ok. When I get a successful installation on the big computer, it seems that it will go through the "install motions," but will wind up with a bunch of corrupted files.
Here is what I will attempt tonight:
1. Try to install from the other reader on the computer.
2. Try to install after sticking the disk in the freezer for a couple of hours.
3. I am going to try and "explore" the cabinet files, and see if the computer will let me.
4. Dust the inside of the readers, to see if there is anything in there that is causing the issue.
5. (Maybe) Reinstall windows.
Any other suggestions?

Just a thought:hmm:
Are you having any other problems with game installations? You mentioned that you changed your mother board.
Is there a bios update for the new mobo and is there a firmware update for your rom drive.

I have had several similar issues. Good game, been buffing myself up for weeks to get it to work, then ...:damn:
I don't know what else might be wrong.
MAybe I suggest you change your HD. Maybe that is the problem. Or try reinstalling Windows, maybe some invisible file will reapear and all will be fine (happened to me once. Game would work, didn't have the time to get it changed for another game. Game was forgetten, and when I was searching for somehing to play, BANG!!! found the game, installed it and it worked fine :yep: It might just have been a miracle of sorts!).
The frezzer thingy sounds strange and cold, but if I'll ever have a dying HD (I'm sure one of my HD's is on the death bed), I'll use your techique!

My last two thoughts
(1) TRY THIS:
Click Start
then Click on run
Type the name regedit, select software(it will be in the yellow folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) and then press "CTRL" & "F" keys.
What you are looking for is any enteries of the game that you have had on your system. Type the game title and find all the enteries for Silent Hunter.
And clean them off your system.
.................................................. ........................
(2)
IF you use XP and if problem is happening on other CD/DVDs
you may need to make sure that the Windows Installer Service is properly installed on your computer. Installations that are based on the Windows Installer Service require the MSI engine to be installed properly to ensure smooth installation. Most installations based on the Windows Installer Service automatically install the MSI engine on the computer prior to running the installation. In case of an error or other unexpected behavior, you may need to install the MSI engine manually.
Note: Windows XP already contains Windows Installer version 2.0. Thus, you should not have to install the Windows Installer Service (MSI engine) on Windows XP.
As you have a problem, reinstall windows XP may help, do not format.
.................................................. .................
Can you not my return the CD/DVD for exchange?

i had the same error, it was caused by a corrupt version of windows installer, just download and reinstall the installer from ms and is should fix everything, did for me anyway.
(the giveaway is if you can copy the contents of the dvd to your hd then the disc isnt in any way corrupt or dirty)

I really should tell you how many times have I heard that clicking/ticking noise :yep:
The things is I don't know which one is it. Since I changed my computer, it hasn't been heard before, but the HD remained the same (I did change one for a bigger one, so I guess it must have been the replaced HD, not the newer ones). I even caused my PC to restart and chnge BIOS settings.:dead:
But all is well now :-?

It depends on your Operating System.
If it is XP, Windows XP contains Windows Installer 2.0 and therefore can't be installed or upgraded by Microsofts redistributables. You have to do a reinstall of XP.
Here read this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=CEBBACD8-C094-4255-B702-DE3BB768148F&displaylang=en
Their is no file for XP. It has to be a complete reinstall of XP or repair.

The story so far:
Tried the freezer trick. NO GO.
Returned my new copy for another new copy. Got the same error.
Tried the other reader. It's a CD-ROM, so it didn't work (as expected).
Updated the bios on my mobo. Tried to update the firmware for my DVD-ROM, couldn't get it to work, but I don't think that is the issue at this point.
I think at this point I either need to reinstall Windows (I have XP Pro)
and/or I need to replace the drive.
I just did the registry thing, and I am going to try and reinstall. I don't expect that will work as the only registry entry was from RealUboat.
I am going to get a copy of Windows from School today and try and reinstall it.
If that doesn't work I may try to reformat as I have backed up everything before I started the upgrades.
Before formatting I am going to get a new DVD-ROM drive and see if that works.
Any other ideas?

One guy got the 1335 error because one of his RAM chips was broken. He replaced it and after that he could install the games. Here´s a free RAM tester:
http://www.memtest86.com/
Or if you have Starforce on your PC, remove it and try the installation again. Here´s the official removal tool:

Ok, I think I have located the source of the problem.
I just tried to install CIV III, because I wanted to try installing a few more games besides Brothers In Arms to see if it crapped out.
It did!!! Similar kind of error, too. So I am thinking that my DVD-ROM is having some sort of issue. Possibly when I was backing everything up I may have overburned it?
Anyway, could I get a few people to confirm my troubleshooting at this point, and then I will risk going and getting a new drive if I can get a few people to reaffirm my diagnosis.
Any other way to check it?
Any recommendations for a company to go with?
I will be heading to school shortly to go ahead and get a cheapo copy of Windows so I have one. In the meantime I will see if the school store has a drive someone could recommend.
Thanx for all the help you guys are awesome.:sunny:

Glad to hear you're getting there......even if it is slowly!;)
So far as getting a new CD / DVD Drive......there are currently LOADS around for a very reasonable price too! ( I'm talking about the UK, but I guess its the same in most places)
I picked up my Emprex 16 X DVD-RW around 6 months ago, for the incredibly low price of £35 (about $60, I think), from my local Discount PC Harware Shop. (Its actually a small retail shop belonging to a former major PC Manufacturer in UK).
I'm sure I've seen lots of similar deals in the big chain stores (PC World etc) for not much more......but you CAN pay anything right up to around £200 for a state-of-the-art model!
Any basic CD /DVD-RW drive will do most jobs that you need, and with most you also get a decent Software Package too, which should give you Burning software and possibly other handy progs.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
(btw....a plain old CD / DVD Conbo drive, without re-writer, will only set you back around half the above prices, if that!)

I would not buy a new DVD-ROM. Go and borrow one from a friend and try it.
You may just waste money on something that is not needed.
The error code 1335 is pointing to a Corrupt CD/DVD-Rom disk or a Windows XP file problem. These codes are very specific to the problem.
The fact that you have tried other CDs/DVDs and say they do not work.
Then try windows REINSTALL with out formating.

i recently had the exact same probs u had and i spent over 2 weeks tryin to solve it. i tryed all the things u mentioned twice over including havin a new dvd rw drive installed and no joy, the thing was some games would install and others would give those damn cab file errors.
my pc was due for an upgrade so i bought and installed myself a new motherboard and processor and bingo no more probs after that. the guy in the shop told me it must be a faulty motherboard so maybe its time for some new hardware. the motherboard and processor only cost me £100 so it was well worth it

Narcosis- actually yes.. you can reinstall the installer (2.2) for xp, yes.. is is a seperate exe. no reinstalling of xp is needed!
the installer can often become corrupt after installing windows service packs, i guess it depends how long youve had xp, as new `puters already have all the service packs preinstalled and avoid any probs with corrupt files.

Well, at this point, I now think I have a bad mobo. It I can't install stuff from either drive, and I can't read stuff from my floppy drive. Gonna return the mobo for a new one and have someone else install it. I could have tried reinstalling windows, but I don't think that would of fixed it, plus I don't have a copy lying around. I can get a EULA one from school, but I might as well wait until vista comes out and get the cheapo then. Anyway, we'll see how it goes when I get the new mobo.
If you get a new mobo then you will need to backup all you have now before installing it. And in doing so will neccessetate the reinstall of XP. Plus you might have to call MS and explain the problem so they will let you use your XP cd and not buy a new copy.
Tho hopefully you'll have the XP OS on a separate partition. All your files will be ok except XP.

Hey guys, just to finish out this thread, turns out it was a bad memory stick, got it replaced, and everything is ok. Except that the original reason that the game was crashing before the upgrades is still there.
I think at this point it must be a corrupt file. The crashes occurred under TW 2.0, so since a new one has come out, I'll be trying that instead, and see if it works better.
Thanx for the help, everyone!!! Happy sailing!
